The Associated Press

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — PepsiCo Inc. plans to invest $180 million to construct a manufacturing and distribution facility that will create 280 jobs in northeastern Oklahoma, officials announced Thursday.

The operation in Pryor, about 45 miles east of Tulsa, will produce Gatorade Thirst Quencher and Propel Fitness Water at the MidAmerican Industrial Park and service an area of six to eight states. Featuring a 1.1 million square-foot warehouse and distribution center and a 400,000 square-foot production area, the plant has a targeted opening date of September 2007, Gatorade spokeswoman Heather Mitchell said. However, some positions will be filled as early as January.

"We weigh many economic, community, environmental and resource factors in our final decision, and we are happy to call Oklahoma home to our ninth manufacturing and distribution facility," Gatorade Co. President Chuck Maniscalco said in a statement.

Mitchell said Gatorade's eighth production and distribution facility will be completed this year near Wytheville, Va. Gatorade is a subsidiary of Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo.

Of the 283 employees in Pryor, Mitchell said 235 will be hourly workers and 48 will be salaried.

"Oklahoma is excited about what this announced plant will mean for the state," Gov. Brad Henry said in a statement. "The facility in Pryor will bring good-paying jobs and a significant economic impact projected to exceed $5 billion over the next 10 years. In addition, PepsiCo will benefit from a highly skilled workforce known for its unparalleled work ethic and loyalty.

"This is a win-win for both Oklahoma and PepsiCo."

Gatorade estimates the facility will have a $5 billion to $7 billion impact on the economy over the first 10 years of operation.

"It's a tremendous, tremendous addition for the city of Pryor," Mayor Jimmy Tramel said. "It's going to bring people into the town. They are going to build houses. It's really exciting."
