A building boom is underway north of Tulsa. It stretches along state highway 20 and US highway 75 near Collinsville.

News on 6 anchor Craig Day takes a look.

Houses are being built in a new subdivision just east of US Highway 75 near state Highway 20. It's part of nearly 1,000 acres under residential development.

"This is an 80 acre track that's being developed in here right now and beyond that is another hundred acres." Collinsville Mayor Stan Sallee says in a year, there will be 500 new homes built on both sides of state Highway 20. "It's just unbelievable. I've lived here all my life and this is just something that nobody anticipated would happen out here."

The growth is fueled by a number of factors. The area is close enough to Tulsa for an easy commute to downtown. And close access to US Highway 75 makes it attractive for people working north of Collinsville. "Possibly the activity in Bartlesville coming from the distribution plant. And the Conoco-Phillips transfer, the new jobs coming into this area."

The lots are also one half to one acre in size, priced in the mid 20's to mid 30's. Collinvsville's population is about 4,500 people. The mayor says with these new developments and other projects in the community, the population could grow to 6,500 people in the next five to ten years.

For now, construction crews are preparing for that growth, along with the city.

Similar developments are also in the works on the west side of US Highway 75 in Skiatook.

Quik Trip also plans a new store at the intersection of state Highway 20 and US Highway 75.
