Need some E-Bay help

For those of you who use E-Bay - I need your help.

I begn to register last night, but I stopped when it asked for my credit information.  The page I was on said that it was used for identification purposes.  But given today's climate for identity theft, I hesitated and then finally stopped before entering any information.  (Plus, I looked up in the URL address of the page I was on and it didn't say "E-Bay" anywhere in it.)

Does anyone remember providing E-Bay with your credit card number when you initially registered?  And if so, is this used when making purchases or is it just kept for their records?
