Oklahoma City's Unique Districts

Paseo Arts District
The Paseo Arts District is known for its eclectic art galleries (many attached to working artists' studios) and shops, as well as its cuisine and nightlife.

Asian District
Oklahoma City’s foodie scene is alive and well in the Asian District, where an influx of Vietnamese immigrants in the 1970s created a hub now known for its Asian fusion cuisine.

Historic Stockyard City
This uniquen district previously known as Packingtown offers over 70 businesses specializing in Western wear, rustic furniture, farm and ranch needs and fine dining. Other attractions include the Rodeo Opry.

Plaza District
It's a little trendy, a little gritty and a lot of fun. If you're the sort that likes to check out the hip and happening, you'll find it in the Plaza District.

Midtown Plaza District
Midtown is located northwest of downtown Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City's Unique Districts

Edward Park, Northeast Oklahoma City
Edwards Lake Fishing Lake is a small lake located within Northeastern Oklahoma City's Edwards Park. The lake has two uncovered docks for casual fishing. There are various fishing classes and workshops that frequently take part at the lake. Contact the city's Parks department to inquire about necessary permits.

Deep Deuce Disrict
Located just north of Bricktown, the Deep Deuce District was the heart of Oklahoma City's African American community in the 1920s and '30s. During that period, the district became nationally known for its exceptional jazz music scene. Music legends Jimmy Rushing and Charlie Christian both made names for themselves in Deep Deuce.

   Uptown 23rd Street Disrict
Nationally recognized and locally loved, Uptown 23rd has long offered great food in a casual setting. Try The Drake for fresh seafood daily or a local favorite, Cheever's, for classic American cuisine in a vintage flower shop.

Adventure District
The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is a trove of galleries and exhibits that showcase the American West. New in 2020 is Liichokoshkomo’, an outdoor learn-and-play area featuring more than 100,000 square feet of hands-on learning experiences for families, including replicas of an Intertribal Village and Western structures, activities and more.

In addition to its world-class art and interactive exhibits, this museum is also home to historical and pop culture artifacts, cowboy gear, firearms and a great gift shop.

Another Oklahoman in the movie business comes home as Prairie Surf Media makes first hire

Jesse Liddell, left, is joining Matt Payne and Rachel Cannon with Prairie Surf Media. [Photo provided, Oklahoman]

In its first hire since Prairie Surf Media’s official launch earlier this year, Jesse Liddell has been named executive vice president
and general counsel by the Oklahoma production company's co-chairmen, Rachel Cannon and Matt Payne.

“We’re very excited to have Jesse join our team at Prairie Surf Media. He is an incredible asset with extensive knowledge in entertainment distribution, and a stellar combination of legal and financing expertise. We love that ‘film and entertainment’ is the industry responsible for bringing him back home,” Cannon and Payne said in a statement.--Oklahoman

                                                            Prairie Surf Studios, Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City's Cox Convention Center will be occupied by Prairie Surf Studios as part of its conversion into a television and movie production hub that will enter the OKC market.  Expect new signage to replace "Cox Business Services Center.'  The 100,000 sq. ft. exhibition hall and 14,000-seat arena and meeting rooms will become the new home to Prairie Surf Media.

Kingdom Story, is already moving in as the former Cox arena and exhibit halls are converted into sound stages.

The first movie, “American Underdog: the Kurt Warner Story,” is set to start filming at Prairie Surf Studios by February 2021.

Prairie Surf Media (PMS) currently controls and manages the largest certified, state-of-the-art soundstage and production facility in the Midwest, and its team, with decades of experience working in the entertainment industry, is set to elevate PSM to be the undisputed category leader and a major player in the global production industry.

Prairie Surf Studio launches production in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City production studio hits the ground running

Grip specialist Jon Shyock, center with cowboy hat, works with students on scene setup at Prairie Surf Studio in downtown Oklahoma City. The food truck and string lighting are a set that will be shot as a nighttime scene. Oklahoman[PROVIDED]

The training, which includes a full film production, started Tuesday and marked the first use of sound stages at Prairie Surf Studio (formerly the Cox Convention Center).

A $160,000 CARES Act grant is helping launch a nonprofit job training program to meet an increasing demand for workers needed to produce films in Oklahoma.

The film, “Running Behind,” is adapted from a script written by student Peyton Benge and the production itself was put on a fast track because of the requirement that the money be spent by Friday.--Oklahoman, January 1, 2020

Matt Payne, with Prairie Surf Media co-founder and actress Rachel Cannon, are set to host their first full movie production in early 2021 with the filming of “American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story,” starring Zachary Levi. They are talking with multiple studios to expand film operations in the state with the downtown studio as a base for multiple live-streaming movies and television shows.

NCAA 64-team softball Bubble hosted by Oklahoma City.

An economic pandemic impact bonanza for Oklahoma City.

BUBBLE BALL?  Why an OKC-only event could work for the NCAA softball tournament.

The NCAA announced earlier this week that it has decided to play the entire men’s basketball tournament this year in and around Indianapolis to make sure the event is held.

Hey, NCAA, do softball next.

I’ve got the perfect place for you: Oklahoma City...

...The NCAA softball tournament is a three-week event that starts with 64 teams. They are seeded into four-team, doubleelimination regionals, then the winners of the 16 regionals advance to twoteam, best-of-three super regionals. The eight winners of the super regionals advance to the WCWS.

So, how would May Madness in OKC work?

...Eight regionals would begin on Thursday, May 20, and finish on Saturday, May 22. Games on that final day would be played starting at 11 a.m. just as WCWS are on days when four games need to be played.

That’s because the other eight regionals would start at those same eight sites that evening. Those regionals would then conclude their three-day runs on Monday, May 24.

Not having all the regionals completed until Monday would be a change from the normal format — although weather delays occasionally push regionals and even super regionals into the first part of the week — but because teams aren’t traveling, finishing on Monday wouldn’t be nearly the strain that it would be in normal years.

Then, super regionals could take play the next weekend at the same eight sites or could be paired down to fewer sites.

...For the metro, we would get a softball-stravaganza that would be a balm for the loss of the WCWS last year. That was a complete and total gut punch, but we could have three full weeks of NCAA games. It would be great for the city and a boost to the economy.

Plus, there’d be lots of cool side benefits such as high schools hosting practices for tournament teams. Often, they practice at the small colleges, but with those fields being used for games, teams would likely use some of the great high school fields around the metro. Think of all the young players who would get a chance to see their softball heroes, to dream their own dreams.

Truly, though, the biggest beneficiaries to a softball bubble would be the teams. They had their seasons cut short a year ago. They didn’t get much of a regular season, much less a postseason. Having the NCAA tournament in one location would ensure it happens.

If everyone would keep that in mind, a softballpalooza would work. You can settle details and reach compromises and stomach changes if you remember why you’re doing this. If you want to make sure you have a tournament, you do a bubble.--Jenni Carlson, Oklahoman, 01/07/2020
