He's a motivational speaker who uses the occasional bible verse. Famous for his lavish church, misquoting the bible and not being a seminary grad. Not my cup of tea, but I know plenty of people who like him.

If it’s any consolation, I thought maybe he was the winning Super Bowl quarterback.

You never have actually listened to him, have you? And the link is totally away from the point...just cause he is rich off it doesn't connect to what I said at all. But hey, that's what we expect from sauerkraut....er, uh, .....? He is nowhere near a Robert Tilton, Dr. Gene Scott, or Oral/Richard Roberts.... or most of the rest of those clowns. Not sure how he dodged that bullet since he went to ORU...?? His church does seem to fit the definition of cult church, though - he has the "amusement park" facility...the Houston Rockets Compaq stadium.

The homes and church facilities of these "prosperity preachers" like Osteen don't built themselves. It's like walking into a casino. In fact, a casino is more honest about the whole cost/benefit interaction inside.

That's for sure - a lot of them get a lot of money. Some less obnoxiously than others. It's like trying to define what a Steven Covey seminar is worth - I heard a recent price of $250 for 3 day event. What is the cost/benefit of that? Some more than others. Steven has made a lot of money doing the inspirational thing. I haven't been, so don't know if it's worth that much or less to me. Big difference is he doesn't build the big amusement park - he lets the audience supply their own facility.

Steven Covey doesn't cloak his message in a religious context. Nor did Dale Carnegie. I guess if it (Osteen) works for you, awesome, but he just really grates on me.

Covey had to walk a line - it was an open secret he was Mormon, but if he had put that out like Osteen does his beliefs, there likely would have been a significant adverse impact to acceptance of his other messages. Some people need secular, some don't. You can just drive down a street in any town in Oklahoma (including Tulsa) and see just how effective the message can be when wrapped in religious trappings. Don't seem to be able to go more than a few blocks before there is another church of some type. Covey died a couple years ago from complications of a bicycle wreck.

Motivational speaking doesn't pay very well, you know what pays REALLY well? Prosperity gospel! JESUS loves me so much he gives me millions. And do you know why brothers? Because I believe in the LORD! Now fill the plate! Fill the plate brothers and sister. Prove to me you love God and that you believe in Jesus by giving me more money! If you do, you too can be rich! And happy, I'm also very happy. Jesus wants you to be happy. Buy my books! Attend my seminar! Subscribe to my podcast. Don't forget we take cards, checks and cash! Brothers and sister, the LORD loves you and needs you to give me more money! Hallelujah! Praise him! Pay the man. * *not an actual quote ORU drop out Cotton Candy Gospel And a profiteer A quick web search shows an estimated $40mil net worth. A $10 million home (which has 3 elevators, a guest house, 1=~18000 sq feet http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/joel-osteens-house-1/view/google/). ~$600k in cash each week given to his church (at least that's how much was stollen from one collection). Purchased a former NBA arena for $105 mil. Yay for using Jesus to take money from other people and avoid paying taxes. Like Jesus said - if you can use my name to get filthy rich, do it! And now he cruises into Tulsa to rake in some dollars from our community. Ummm, yay? Eric Cartman and L. Ron Hubabrd had it right, if you want to get rich... look to religion (this does NOT apply to everyone, obviously. But I think I have made my disdain for the prosperity gospel pretty clear).

Don't you just hate it when people from other states come to Tulsa and take dollars from our community?
