NEW MEXICO HERITAGE PRESERVATION ALLIANCE HOSTS DESIGNER NANCY CLANTON IN ASSOCIATION WITH SANTA FE DESIGN WEEK

Santa Fe, NM (May 27, 2005) - The New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance ("NMHPA") - in collaboration with Santa Fe Design Week - presents "Are We Designing the Night Away?: A Case for Design with the Night Sky in Mind," Friday June 24, 2005, 10 am to 12 noon at the Scottish Rite Temple, Santa Fe. One of two events presented by the NMHPA for Santa Fe Design Week, the presentation will address the importance of proper lighting design in sustaining the quality of Santa Fe's night time environment.

John Hooker, AIA, Albuquerque, who will first present a local perspective on the relationship between light pollution and proper design, comments " The traditional, dark, night sky of the high desert is part of the heritage of New Mexico. With good lighting design, we can enhance our buildings and civic spaces while preserving our valued dark skies. Nancy Clanton, Clanton and Associates, will share her experience nationally and in Colorado on the value of great lighting. "

Keynote speaker Nancy Clanton, of Clanton & Associates, Boulder, will discuss the objectives of well designed exterior lighting -- increased safety and security, defining a sense of community, and aesthetics. She will provide examples of her firm's sustainable lighting designs which reduce light pollution.

Native New Mexican, John Hooker, AIA, CNU is Director of Facilities and Capital Projects for Expo New Mexico and the New Mexico State Fair and former Mayor of the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. He is a newspaper columnist and talk-show host and long-time advocate for dark sky design.
While mayor, Los Ranchos received the New Mexico APA award for innovation in zoning with its "Village Center" district. John also received the NMAPA's award for public communication for his newspaper columns in The Albuquerque Tribune on architecture, planning and transportation.

Nancy Clanton, PE, LC, IALD, is founder and President of Clanton & Associates and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Colorado. Nancy speaks throughout the nation on topics relating to sustainable and energy efficient design and has been an instructor at the University of Colorado-Boulder. She was past chairperson of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America's Outdoor Environmental Lighting Committee. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Lighting Designers and the International Dark Sky Association, serves on the Advisory Committee of Environmental Building News, and is a member of the United States Green Building Council. Nancy was a topic editor for the IESNA Lighting Handbook and her committee was responsible for the production of the IESNA Recommended Practices on Outdoor Lighting. She was group leader for the "Greening of the White House" initiative and received the 1999 "Contribution to the Built Environment Award" from the Colorado North Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 2001 Nancy served as a final editor for the Advanced Lighting Guidelines produced by the California Energy Commission. Her firm's lighting design projects reflect her sustainable philosophy and seven of their projects have been named to the AIA Committee on the Environment Earth
Day Top Ten List. Nancy is a LEED 2.0 Accredited Professional.
