Bixby - Many are calling Bixby Oklahoma's newest boom town. Shops, homes and shopping centers are being built there at a phenomenal rate. NewsChannel 8's Bill Mitchell found out they borrowed their plan for growth from another Green Country town.

Growth is rushing into Bixby faster than the growing number of cars driving south on Memorial. The business and civic leaders planned it that way.

In order to get that plan, the folks in Bixby went to Owasso, because Owasso has the funnel plan. A plan to get all the people to funnel into their town to spend their money. And the folks in Bixby decided they would just build our funnel on the south side.

"We have had a concerted two-year effort to become the most user friendly, business friendly town in the state of Oklahoma," says Sean Kouplen, President of Grand Bank.

It has worked. Back then, the chamber luncheon would have attracted a couple of dozen people. Today's crowd numbers around one hundred.

The so called Make it Happen plan made it happen for commercial developer Tim Remy.

"We're trying to do a healthy blend of not having a center that has just one thing in it," Remy says.

His current shopping center, Pullazzo, is already 82 percent leased. business is so good, more construction is planned on an adjoining 25 acres. More homes are being built as well.

"Oh it's been fantastic," says Gary Haynes with Terry L. Davis Homes. "We started about 15 months ago with 82 lots. And we have two lots remaining and two houses to move into."

Everyone agrees this is just the beginning. The tip of the iceberg. Last month, Bixby saw a more than 26-percent jump in their sales tax revenue. They expect those numbers to grow as more people and businesses move to Bixby.

Considering I live less then one block away from Bixby city limits, this is good news IMO. Near my house they have plans to build two new shopping centers (Memorial and 101st) and then down 91st and Mingo they are building something. Either a QT or a Walgreens that will probably be followed by more retail on that corner.
