(WXYZ) - Detroit water customers are urged to schedule an appointment for a meter upgrade before they see a big jump in their bill.

You have to sign up to have the new automated meter reading equipment installed. Detroit water customers will receive notices in the mail letting them know when technicians are working in their neighborhoods to install the new automatic meter readers.

An appointment must be scheduled. Customers who do not schedule an appointment will be charged $30 each time the Water Department sends someone out to read the water meter.
