Are there any specialists in Tulsa that do vasectomies?

I could go to my regular family doctor, and get a referral, but that seems like a waste of an office visit, when I could just go directly to the guy who'll do the surgery.

Yes, try any urologist. I wish I could remember the doctor who did mine. It was painless, took 10 minutes and a pretty nurse held it while he worked. Hardly any pain after the procedure. I asked for the hot scalpel he used to do the procedure and he gave it to me. It great tool to use with my fly tying kit.

You could let your fingers do the walking through the Yellow Pages.

I think the visit to your regular doctor would be worth the price of admission.  I've done that twice (other ailments) with good results.

Can't remember who did mine.  It was a guy with St. Francis in the medical "towers" right next to the hospital.  I do not recall his name, but he was on the list my insurance company provided and had no apparent gaffs by the various rating/reporting agencies.  When I look for an MD I want one who has been out long enough to know the ropes, but not out so long that they aren't up to the latest and greatest... might not make any realistic sense, but there ya' go.

The procedure is no big deal.  Generally you go in with a wife or significant other for a consult (5-10 minutes) where they describe the procedure and tell you to consider it permanent sterilization (to make sure your 'other' is on board).  Reversals often DO NOT WORK.  Ask any questions you have and you're out... generally have to wait at least 30 days before you can do the procedure to make sure you really really want to do it.

There are several variants.  Most of them now are single slit procedures where there is a single incision in the center to reach both testicles.  That is the method I am familiar with.

No special surgery type preparation really (eat what you want, drink all you want, etc.).  I was fortunate enough to have a double dose of Valium the morning of my surgery (do whatever you want man!).  Show up with someone to drive you home and a jock strap and wait to get called back.

When you get called back the Doctor runs over the normal stuff with you again and leaves for a couple minutes while you "prepare."  When he comes back it is just the doctor and you.

2 needle pricks (no pun intended) to each side of the scrotum with a liticane like substance.  It is uncomfortable but not painful, a pinch if you will.  There is a ~5-10 minute wait for it to take full effect during which time the MD may leave the room or prepare everything he will need.  He then swaps on some iodine and does a quick shave job down the center of the scrotum.

What he actually does you can read plenty about.  But from my perspective you could feel nothing at all.  Messing with something or other, puff of smoke (cauterizing & tying is most effective... whoa, smoke?).  After about 5 minutes he announces you are halfway done.  10-15 minutes and you are all done.  About 3 dissolving stitches and he will help you stuff your jock strap with gauze and you're off.

You than have about an hour to get home and on the couch.  It feels like you were kicked in the nuts, not good at all.  Tylenol is the only pain med you will need though.  So long as I stayed laid out on the couch I was just fine.  Going to the bathroom and showering was not comfortable for a couple days (anything I had to remove the jock strap basically).  But not really THAT bad... probably more a fear of it being very bad than actually being bad.

I had mine done on Friday and watched basketball all day Saturday and Sunday (March Madness!).  I went to work on Monday with no major problems (desk job) but went home that night thankful I didn't have to walk a lot.  Wednesday I went to a Tulsa Basketball game with no problems but-for making sure I was careful.

Within 2 weeks I was 100%.  After my 30 day checkup I even got a doctors note saying I needed to "purge" my system... exclusively to be used to harass my wife.  DON'T FORGET, it is not effective for a few months (sometimes much sooner, but wait for the test).

Probably too much info... but there ya' go.  If you really need me to, I can find out who did mine but I imagine any urologist would do as good of a job.

A most excellent response. Funny you mention the Valium, I took the dosage before leaving the house. My wife drove. As we were leaving the house, I got a little worried that it was going to be painful and the medication would not work. I told the wife I would be right back, ran inside and took a shot of Tequila.

The dad of one of my high school friends did mine.  I asked if afterwards, when I did the "follow up sample", if saliva mixed in with it would skew the results.

He just groaned and said I hadn't changed a bit since high school.  I told my wife that and she was real tight-lipped in her response.

I was OK with the procedure right up to the point where they brought the students in to observe.  I'd like to say that there was plenty of space for everyone to see, but in reality, they had to take turns.

When Mr.K had his, he wanted to go test drive cars afterward.  Ha.  About 10 minutes after leaving the office he was passed out.  He asked for a pizza then crashed.

Tell your wife to stock up on several bags of frozen peas and keep them in rotation.  Mr. K was playing soccer a week later.

Best of Luck.  You're a good guy.
