This is why the Weathermen leveled a townhouse in Manhattan.  The nitro probably got a little too warm.

OK, there is no reference to what you are implying, and even so, you are implying that a lab to produce liquid nitro was in the basement of one of the townhouses, and that their failed distilation and subsequent mixing of chemicals came from a hidden lab, and they were able to try and formulate trinitrotoluene in a basement.

It would have been easier for them to steal blasting caps and create an ampho bomb than a crude tnt.
