Title: Momma has come
Post by: TheTed on March 28, 2008, 09:56:51 pm
There's a big banner on the front of what will become a new pizza joint in the Blue Dome District, on Elgin between 1st and 2nd (between El Guapo's and Dirty's).

I look forward to some late night dining, something the Blue Dome has lacked.

From the website it looks like it'll be an awesome place. They'll have delivery, old school arcade games, beer and wine, a massive TV and live entertainment.

Joe Momma's is good pizza.

I wonder if they are closing their 61st street location or just opening another?

Saw the sign about a month ago and forgot to post about it!  From the details on the website, it sounds pretty Kick-A.

And you know what usually follows pizza places? Bowling alleys [;)]

When I first saw the title of this thread this is what I thought of...

If you haven't seen the commercial, they play it everyday during Jeopardy. Once the song is in your head, it's hard to get out!

Joe Mammas has been a Tulsa Talons sponsor for a couple of years now. Had to laugh at the game last night at the new contest they are doing. People who sign up from the crowd have to come up with the best "Yo Mama"...type joke.. Yo Mama is so (fat, ugly, etc..) she (insert joke here). I forgot what they win. A gift certificate I think.

Awesome.

That district is REALLY turning into something special. I've been to Beale Street and some of the other famous districts, and really they aren't THAT special.  The BlueDome nearly  has as many bars, is adding restaurants, and hopefully will have some affordable hotels nearby soon.  Add some atmosphere and events nearby and it should really take off.

I doubt they are closing their 61st location.  The original plan was to put it next to McNellies, but there were permitting, construction, whatever problems, then the 61st option came open. I saw the sign last weekend and was glad they are following through with the downtown plan.  Even though we are in Sand Springs, we still go downtown for going out as often as we can find something to do down there, this will only help.  Weather is getting nice which will make El Gaupo's rooftop extra cool again!

Hope more and more come along.  We just came back from a weekend in OKCity watching the Rangers & White Sox play.  We stayed at the Skirvin (wonderful!).  We parked our car at the hotel and never drove it again until we left, walked to dinner, game, starbucks, hit a few clubs, walked back to hotel.  It was so nice.  I continue to hope to see more of that happening in our downtown!

What's up, guys! Thanks for your curiosity. I just got a call from the Tulsa World. The writer saw this thread and called to ask me some questions.

We're not closing our location on 61st Street. While the downtown restaurant will be much different (a little more upscale, bigger and better menu, bigger beer and wine selection), we're happy with the success we're having at 61st and 169.

We opened our first store at All-Star sports complex with the intent of learning how to run a restaurant and to develop our ideas for the downtown store that we always wanted. After a few years of making dumb mistakes and working out the kinks, we're ready for the next step!

Thanks so much for your interest! I look forward to seeing you all downtown soon!

Blake

How about TulsaNow purchase some equity in my new store? Then you can have lunch in your own restaurant....every day...

How much Pizza does an Ad Banner buy us?

What is the Pizza to Pixel exchange rate?

We need a banner ad. The Spexton Jewelry one works like a charm. I spent a good ten minutes checking out their site earlier from the link here. Very cool jewelry.

The location is at 1st and Elgin, just south of El Guapo's.

Buy one now before TulsaNow raises the price. These ads are easily worth ten times what they are charging. I bought two of them and locked in a six month price.

Going to derail this a bit sorry guys and gals in advance. Is this real brick oven pizza? Is it like it used to be at Joe Vigs think that was the name used to be where a Dr. Whatever eye car is on 31st and Harvard.

Anyway if it is I am extra excited, either way I have two places I need to take pictures for and get hour information for Tulsa Finds.

Real brick oven. It's the same oven used by California Pizza Kitchen, Spago, and Wolfgang Puck's.

You won't be disappointed.

Curious about what the inside will be like?

http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/1/6/1684619/FLOOR%20PLAN.pdf

This is close, though not exact. I hope you can make some sense of it. The area at the bottom is the front. We're taking out the windows in the front and replacing them with overhead doors that come up. The actual front door is about 12 ft in. So that whole area is outdoor seating. The round thing on the right is the oven. The kitchen is all open so you can see what's going on your pie. The bar is in the middle. There's a stage with a curtain a little further back. This is also where the big projector screen will be. The big space at the very back is a really big private room. Gonna be fun.

Enjoy dreaming about sitting on our open dining area in the front, eating a delicious brick oven pizza, and watching Paul Tay ride his bike down Elgin...

RM, that white cheese is the food of the gods.  That is Provel cheese, right outta St. Louis, VERY difficult to find if you are NOT in St. Louis.  Also known as "Italian Velveeta", this search has taken me to 2 states in quest for it's smokey flavor and melty properties. I lately have had to sate myself with balls of Lovera's Caciocavallo.

However, this is a special appreciation you have, one that others may scoff at, calling St. Louis pizza "Crap on a cracker" and other horrible things. [B)] Stay strong, and be confident that your cheese has stood the test of time and long after others are gone, Provel will still be melting.

RedPin Bowling (http://"http://www.bowlredpin.com/") is a REALLY COOL bowling alley that our company just installed a system in around Nov. of last year.  It's located in BrickTown in OKC.  It's kind of a yuppy bowling alley feel.  Food is good, full bar, & cool music.

Would go great in our downtown!!

Hey all -

Thanks again for your interest!

We're getting really close. I'd say we'll be done with construction next week and will be training and getting ready to open around the end of the month.

Keep your fingers crossed for us that the final round of permits goes well!

We'll see you soon. Trust me that I'm as ready as you are to get open.

In the meantime, my managers have discovered the White Rabbit. Look it up and check it out. It's a sandwich type place in the Brady District.

Hugs,
Blake

I am tiring of waiting, PizzaBoy.

Give us a hint of your menu. Tell me about one of your specialty pizzas on your website...the one called "The Best Pizza in the World".

On your website, you say, "trust me, this pizza is freaking good".

Can I trust you? Is it really the best in the whole world?

I remember the time back in the 1960's when I was a kid that pizza was a rare unusual special treat in the days of Ken's original "Pizza Parlor" or even Shotgun Sams, but today to me, pizza is as common as McDonalds or Sonic, regardless of the source.  Today when I desire pizza, I just pull a Red Baron or DiGornio out of the freezer and have fresh hot pizza at half the cost or less of eating out.  To me, pizza is just fast food, much more economical to prepare at home.  And you can always "doctor" a frozen pizza to your liking, way cheaper than delivery or eating out.

Eating out is highly overrated.

Steve, trust me when I say a frozen pizza is no comparison to a fresh pizza hot from a hearth oven.  But to each his own.  If you want to compare, I'll buy you a Joe Momma's of your choice when Blake gets the downtown location open.  :)

RM, he's not lying when he says that pizza is "freaking good."  As a rule, that topping combo wouldn't attract me, but Blake had his guys make one when he and I were in a meeting one day and it was fantastic!

Can't wait until he's open.  Both the food and the atmosphere are going to be outstanding!

Steve,

That is subjective.  I enjoy eating out very much and I'm a good cook.  I've doctored my frozens and made fresh pizza.  I've not beaten good pizza shops.

If I owned a brick oven...maybe.

I think the pinball machine you linked to is a later release of called Simpson's pinball party.

The one we have is from the 90's and has Homer's radioactive towers at the back end of the game board. It looks like this one.

http://www.pinballrebel.com/game/pins/simpsons/simpsons_pinball.htm

We also have Dr. Who, Flash Gordon, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Thanks for the clarification on the quarters, grizz.

+1 on keeping the brick.  Painted brick is a pet peeve of mine - the point of brick is to look good and be maintenance free.  Painting it removes the aesthetic appeal while creating a new maintenance problem.

no I wouldn't.  The one thing my vendors from out west LOVE to see is all of our brick.  I guess because they don't have any/it is expensive.  keep it natural.

I believe it's already painted, just painted red.

With some careful development on surface parking lots, Elgin could be the new Main Street (http://"http://www.batesline.com/archives/2003/07/envisioning-elg.html").

In reference the above pinball discussion, the last pinball manufacturer has declared bankruptcy and may close its doors.

Agreed. One of the primary reasons that Elgin and the Blue Dome area is doing well is that the stock of smaller one and two-story buildings lend themselves perfectly to these types of uses. Small entrepreneurs can make a go of their start-ups without getting lost in the lobby of an office tower.

The shame is that it's exactly these one- and two-story buildings that have been lost throughout much of downtown. Even where there are still buildings in the core, the small little surface lots sprinkled throughout were almost all small buildings that housed restaurants and retail. They're gone now, so the cool little businesses have no choice BUT to go to the Blue Dome, Brady or 3rd & Kenosha area. There's nowhere else for them to go in the core.

Want an exception that proves the rule? Elote. Cool little place run by a 27-year-old entrepreneur. Where did she open? The Day Building a two-story building (designed by Bruce Goff). It's one of the few small buildings left in the core.

Viva Elgin!

Really?  Sigh... I miss seeing pinball games around.  Hell, I miss being able to wander into a gas station or grocery store and find several cool arcade games.  Nowadays all you can find are the same bore-donkey golf games at sports bars.

At any rate, while video games live on at home, when pinball vanishes it's gone for good.  One more reason I'm REALLY looking forward to this joint opening up.

Heh, I made some comment to the proprietor as I walked by a couple weeks ago. To paraphrase "I wish you were open, I have to walk past and eat Mexican food!"  And we did.  Pizza would have been better.

He is clearly losing patience, I'm sure the start-up period is the most painful as money is going out...

No, the final health inspection occurs Monday, so they will be officially open on Tuesday.

I weaseled my way in to eat as part of a training session (or two) today. Food is excellent and I enjoyed that his new delivery boy is none other than Paul Tay. He is working as a server now until they start deliveries.

If you like spicy, order the Judgement Day.

Prices seem reasonable too. Two people can eat for $20 (plus tip)

+1

Mika was great and the attention we recieved from the staff was outstanding.

The Greek pizza is very good.

How far is the delivery radius?  Tay in his santa suit on his bike doesn't sound very fast or far reaching.

I was excited to visit Joe Momma's yesterday with my daughter. Unfortunately we showed up at 4:00 p.m. and they didn't open until 5:00 p.m. I was bummmmmmmed. I tried to talk my eight year old daughter into burger night at McNellie's (yummy!) but she was insistent we eat at El Guapo. I reluctanly agreed. It was a beautiful day for the patio. That's about the only positive experience I had there. When the food came (cold) I waited for the server to bring silverware. She never did. I finally had to do it myself. The last six visits at El Guapo I have had to retrieve my own silverware! Seriously. I guess I could look at it as a positive that the service is consistent.

I just don't get it. McNellie's is wonderful across the board. One of my favorites. El Guapo is just a disaster across the board. My tolerance not to mention giving 20 something chances to get it right have run out.

Sorry to rant about another restaurant and take away from the excitement of Joe Momma's opening. I will try again tonight.

Mr. Burns

If you haven't seen the new super cool webpage, check it out:
http://www.joemommas.com/

Several things to fix (look at the hours, open from 11am to 12pm M-F, that's a limited time frame!  Also the weekend time is not designated as such) and it isn't filled in yet... but nice page anyway.  I love the background.

We need a Joe Mamma lunch sometime.

Overall, a great experience with a waiter who was just a little too eager...

Went by for lunch last week. I was disappointed when I was told they didnt have a lot of the specialty pizzas available by the slice yet. So the wife and I had plain ole sausage and pepperoni due to both of our limited palettes (on opposite extremes). Also, I recall at the south Tulsa location there were pizza-like sandwiches. I got one and it was amazing. I was bummed to not see it on the menu downtown. On the plus side, the pizza we did have was very, very good. Next time my work wants to order from Hideaway, I will definitely throw Joe Momma's name out instead. I will definitely go back when they've got some of the wrinkles ironed out.

Ok I pulled a couple of buddies in there last night...9:45ish. Ordered a round of beers (no strong ones yet)3 guys 2 appetites; we ordered a T-Rex and a California something w/ chicken.
The server tried way too hard and was bordering on annoying (thanks for the effort...were just a couple of good ole boys out for some grub and brewskies...let us tell our stories and drink and eat). The server did ask our opiinions on the food and build out of the space which I credit him for. The pizzas came and we really liked them despite being smaller than we ordered.....here come the server and says "hey guys guess what........those 2 pizzas are smaller than you ordered I have another in oven  right now to make up the diff" OK we were just wondering why they were smallish.
We snarfed 'em down and took 3 pcs home in a box.
My usually no comment dining partners did exclaim: "damn good frikin pizza".
I also am now waiting on the spcialty pizzas like a craker crust which the server said they will get online when the wrinkles are ironed out.
They are open till 3AM! Go boys! Get some foosball tables if you dont already(I didnt walk the whole place.
JoeMomma I am going to PM you on some buildout things I would like to comment on. (Iam from a commercial construction background).
Food:for pizza 5* out of 5!
service:3* out of 5 (servers: relax but get drinks on table faster and dont talk/hover as much; it's cool just r e l a x and smile...all of you; you guys were walking around like aflicted Emo's what up w/ that?just smile damnit!)
atmoshere: 3* it was near 10pm not many folks in there; it will improve in time.
We were actually headed to BoneFish Grill that night...ended up downtown..walked into Tsunami sat at bar...bartender walked off said she would be back there were 2 other bartenders there that didnt even fart in our direction....my buddies said we at least have to get a drink! NO! we dont...screw them if they dont want our cash (this is one of my favorite places too)I counted down from 9 and I said well boys were outa here. (Tsunami: put down the damn bong and get your act together dumbasses!)Out in the cold to finf food and drink...McNellies here we come...."oh hey let's try this new pizza joint I have been reading about on TulsaNow!" and there you have it.We polished up at Cellar Dweller.

I am okay with only having limited pizzas by the slice but I wish they would have a calendar so you knew what you could get what days. I have been in enough the staff is starting to know me by name.

I ate there today (no surprise) and unfortunately left our leftover (half a pizza and some chicken strips) at the table.

Joe Momma's Pizza to return in new spot; Phoenix Cafe to have new concept

Joe Momma’s Pizza fans have something to celebrate. The restaurant, destroyed by fire in July 2015, is returning in a new location, and in separate but related news, Phoenix Café will be launching a new concept.

Joe Momma’s, formerly located at 112 S. Elgin Ave., will relocate to 308 E. First St.

“We are more than thrilled to bring Joe Momma’s back to Tulsa after a long and difficult hiatus,” Blake Ewing said Monday. “Our new address in the Jacob’s Lofts building around the corner from our old location is a large and restaurant-ready space, allowing for much-needed growing room.”

Joe Momma’s will take over space that formerly held S&J Oyster Co.

“We’re also excited to refresh the Phoenix concept, bringing brick-oven pizza and an expanded menu featuring healthy café options to the Pearl District,” Ewing said.

Phoenix Café is located at 1302 E. Sixth St.

Joe Momma’s Pizza and White Flag, both formerly operated under the ownership of Ewing, were sold last year to Healthy & Tasty Brands Corp., headed by CEO Keith Wilkerson. Wilkerson recently said White Flag is transitioning to a new concept.

Ewing said Healthy & Tasty Brands has sold its interest in Joe Momma’s to a new ownership group that also will operate Phoenix Cafe. Ewing said he is a minority partner.

“The new ownership group has not hired management, and I will not operate the business in my previous capacity,” said Ewing, who is also a Tulsa city councilor.
