quote:
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell — founder of the Moral Majority and the face of the religious right in the 1980s — died Tuesday after being found unconscious in his office, a Liberty University executive said.

Ron Godwin, Liberty's executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, had been found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.

I have respect for the dead.  Even Falwell.

This thread is down here, because he was political, and people like you can't seperate politics from much of anything.

I think this bothers MichaelC because he's a closet Falwell fan.  No one else seems to care other than him...

I didn't say I "cared".  Life is a terminal condition.  Had to happen sometime.

But I do respect the dead.   I might miss the poor bastard, just a little bit.  Hope it was painless, hope he get's where he wanted to go.

My politics and the Reverend Falwell's politics couldn't be more dissimilar. But unlike these evangelists with the "Seed Faith" gimmicks, and financial and moral improprieties (such as Jimmy Swaggart), he was probably cleaner than most of those high-powered TV preachers.

Stop it.  I'm trying to show some faux-concern here.  You trying to break my facade?

On second thought.  You're right.  I've respected the man for about an hour, that should be enough.  Time for a title change.

I don't know.  It could be: "Falwell to heaven: please let me in."

Or "Who knew summers in heaven could be such a b****"

That "Croaks" thing might be a little too much.

A tribute to Jerry:

quote:
I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped [9-11] happen.'

quote:
AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals and all of society for not expunging them from among us

quote:
If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being

quote:
Thank God for these gay demonstrators. If I didn't have them, I'd have to invent them. They give me all the publicity I need.

quote:
The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.

quote:
I hope to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we don't have public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them.

quote:
The First Amendment is not without limits.

quote:
An individuals privacy ceases when their behavior becomes an abomination unto god, no matter the location.  Morality, is very much a public affair.
(in response to Lawrence v. Texas)

quote:
Labor unions should study and read the Bible instead of asking for more money. When people get right with God, they are better workers.

quote:
Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions.

quote:
God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.

quote:
I am such a strong admirer and supporter of George W. Bush that if he suggested eliminating the income tax or doubling it, I would vote yes on first blush.

quote:
Scientology has a terrible track record of bigotry.

Truly the kind of person we should all aspire to be.  So full of love and such a giving person.  And a strong believer in personal choice, freedom, and a pluralistic secular society.

That said, even he distanced himself from Phelps:
quote:
Fred Phelps does not give the religious right a bad name, because nobody claims kin to that guy.

and the poor bastard never got to see the rapture.  I think he drank the poison he was selling long, long ago.

I missed the orig. title and so your claim to respecting the dead under the title "croaks" had me looking for a punchline.

Here's hoping his successor is equally "distingushed" so as to be rendered mostly harmless. (as much respect as I can Muster.)

A drunk man who smelled like beer sat down on a subway seat next to a fundie preacher. The man's tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a half empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading.

After a few minutes the man turned to the preacher and asked, "Say, Reverend, what causes heart disease?"

The preacher replied, "It's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, a contempt for your fellow man, sleeping around with prostitutes, and lack of bathing!!!"

The drunk muttered in response, "Well, I'll be damned," then returned to his paper.

The preacher, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. "I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you had heart disease?"

The drunk answered, "I don't have it, Reverend. I was just reading here that Jerry Falwell does."

I know, it takes news like this for the recovering fundamentalist to come out of lurking mode.

Jordan's great....if the way he drives on XBox is any indication, however, I'm not in any rush to see him do the real thing lol.

Well, of all people Larry Flint had something nice to say about him:

quote:
Upon hearing of his death, Flynt released the following statement to Access Hollywood:

"The Reverend Jerry Falwell and I were arch enemies for fifteen years. We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle – the l988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor.

My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in

California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.

The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in."

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/05/16/hitchens-slams-falwells-life/

hmmm... guess Christopher Hitchens is not fond of Jerry Falwell... from Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN...

"The empty life of this ugly little charlatan proves only one thing: that you can get away with the most extraordinary offenses to morality and to truth in this country if you will just get yourself called Reverend.

Who would, even at your network, have invited on such a little toad to tell us that the attacks of September the 11th were the result of our sinfulness and were God's punishment if they hadn't got some kind of clerical qualification?

People like that should be out in the street, shouting and hollering with a cardboard sign and selling pencils from a cup."

--------------------------------------------

"I'm going to repeat what I said before about the Israeli question. It's very important. Jerry Falwell kept saying to his own crowd, yes, you have got to like the Jews, because they can make more money in 10 minutes than you can make in a lifetime. He was always full, as his friends Robertson and Graham are and were, of anti- Semitic innuendo.

Yet, in the most base and hypocritical way, he encouraged the worst elements among Jewry. He got Menachem Begin to give him the Jabotinsky Medal, celebrating an alliance between Christian fundamentalism and Jewish fanaticism that has ruined the chances for peace in the Middle East.

Lots of people are going to die and are already leading miserable lives because of the nonsense preached by this man."

Yes, it is amazing what $ome are allowed to get away with when they are called "Reverend".

ANN COULTER did a write up on his death.  I strongly dislike this woman...

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=20753

She agrees with EVERYTHING Jerry Falwell ever said, the only thing she doesn't like is that he didn't hate fags enough.  He 'loved the person' and hated the sin, when he should have hated everything about them and their wicked evil lifestyle they are trying to destroy the world with.

I think someone's a closet lesbian AND wasnt loved as a child.

I fail to see why anyone takes Ann Coulter seriously, let alone why any news network or magazine would ever call upon her to comment on the events of the day. If this is all an act on her part, so be it, but i still think that a little psychiatric care may be in order.

And Michelle Malkin is hardly an improvement....

"Respect? Play him the worlds smallest violin."

Even if you liked Jerry, I would hope you do not subscribe to the notion that upon someones death you have to pretend they were a good person and show "respect."  Compliment them were do (Hitler was a good public speaker) but why pretend the person was something they were not?

The guy does not come across very well though.  Then again, neither did Hannity.  Cutting people off never goes very far in persuading an audience who is correct.

I also liked it when Hannity compared all atheists Stalin, Mao, Hitler, and Pol Pot . Then said you cant speak poorly about Falwell because he helped people.  To wit - whats his name pointed out that Hamas is also a charity.  The guy made some good points, then makes himself look like a jackass.

You had to love the quote though where he said that had Falwell been given an enema before he died that he could have been buried in a matchbox...

He's never worried about coming across well, as he was probably lit before they taped.

Sheesh, how many bowls did Hitchins smoke before that interview?  He makes Fred Thompson look lively. [}:)]  Nice comment at the end there about the enema, though hard to understand.

From a purely Christian stand-point this is a happy occasion, he ostensibly has been called home to the God he served people are supposed to rejoice.

Personally, I think he's was the same type of hate-mongering, intollerant heap of crap that Rev. $harpton is.

Where's Cubs with a warm, fuzzy eulogy?
