Title: Urban Wildlife
Post by: patric on December 17, 2006, 12:39:38 am
This fox looked to be almost the size of an average dog, and just sat there in the road on 25th St. near the Broken Arrow Expressway.

Seemed much less interested in me as I crept past than whatever animal was on the other side of the fence, but he does seem to be well-fed.

I saw a fox yesterday afternoon, he ran across 21st just east of Lewis at about 2:00. Might even be the same one, he looked young.

I wish I had my camera with me.

I've seen a little fox here in Florence Park two or three times...  I've also seen more than a few racoons around here, too.  My co-worker saw one trotting down the middle of Boston Avenue near 18th one morning at 5am.

When I lived near Crow Creek I saw Raccoon, fox, rabbits, skunk (my labrador got the business end of one once) and such all of the time. Now that I live closer to DT and the river, all I ever see are opossum.

I saw a fox around 4:00 this morning close to 56th and Riverside.

I have seen foxes and sundry wildlife in my well established (52+ years old) subdivision at 26th St. South and Yale.  They are not encroaching on our territory, we are violating theirs.  Respect the wildlife, and they will give you no problems, in my experience.

I think its a bit sad that for the most part I can judge the concentration  of wildlife by whats left of them by the side of the road.

Been a Mama Fox running Kenosha for years now.

There was a slew of rabbits that lived in the "grove" on the 3rd st. vacant lot.
With the trees now felled: guess she won't be coming back from here out.

But there'll never be a shortage of 'coons.
Got enough of those to choke Godzilla.

Don't guess regular bum's count as wildlife, but we can't leave out the Big Foot that migrates up and down the RR tracks behind John Taylor's Citgo station on 2nd.
Type B personality, fer sure.

Squirrells ain't such good eatin' raw: nor filling if your a big, fat, starving guy. jdb

Birds are our friends....they are lead indicators....

Do you think the birds on Riverside might be telling us something.

Has anyone noticed the two bald eagles along Riverside between 41st & 51st (east side)?  I know bald eagles have been nesting around the area for a while, but I have been amazed at how frequently I see them these days.  I have seen one or two of them every morning for the past week.

Yes, I've seen those two eagles and saw another one gliding around 11th yesterday.... AND I've been attacked by the owl.  There's also a HUGE red fox that trots down the trail between 11th and 15th about 4AM some mornings and he's not scared of much.

The neighborhood fox ran in front of me at 26th & Harvard Saturday night (probably positioning himself for Sunday night's Curbside Buffet).
I also suspect there may be fewer stray cats roaming around here, given his size.

There was an owl in my front yard yesterday. Apparently foxes like owls because I saw one near hooters a few months ago.

I have seen fox in Tulsa:

1) Creek Turnpike near Olive
2) OSU College of Medicine over by the refineries
and 3) at Mohawk park

That's pretty good for an urban environment.

Last week saw an owl perched on the rain gutter at the back door glaring at a somewhat agitated cat inside (he was twice the cat's size)...
...and last night a neighbor's motion detector drew my attention to a fox sniffing at where their garbage is usually put.

We have seen quite a few raccoons that apparently live in the storm drains in our neighborhood (south of the Creek Turnpike between Yale and Sheridan).

I have also seen a rather large coyote walking down the street 2 times during daylight. Doesn't seem to be afraid of anything... I guess that's why we haven't seen any rabbits around here for a couple of years, although a few years ago, you couldn't plant anything without it being devoured.

Two years ago, I also saw a deer running through the neighborhood, but haven't seen it since then. I figure it lives somewhere in the woods around the turnpike.

Nick

An owl flew in front of my car near 28th and Lewis.  I had never seen an "urban" owl before.

Be glad you don't have these back there:

http://www.desertusa.com/magnov97/nov_pap/du_collpecc.html (http://"http://")

There have been a couple of dogs attacked in the north Scottsdale area that were pretty severe. My wife in her dog walking business has encountered these, a couple of bobcats, and in the Troon area there are a couple of mountain lions from time to time. She hasn't had any attacks on the dogs she takes care of fortunately.

There used to be at least two in that area; you could hear them calling to one another at night.
Good at ridding the neighborhood of rats and mice, but may be tougher for them with so many roosts destroyed by the ice storm (or lit up by floodlights).

I've seen a couple owls in our neighborhood (Renaissance), and tons of bats. I had one that perched on my chimney for a couple of nights in a row, so I put a couple pieces of fruit out for it.

Strange that this topic came back up. Yesterday around mid day I saw what looked like two very large grey wolves. Too big for foxes, too gray and full bodied for coyotes. On 106th west of Memorial in a cul-de-sac where Avalon Medical sits. Beautiful animals that stared at me then disappeared into the wooded area behind the bank. Never see any rabbits around there! Or stray dogs either.

Ummm, are there really wolves in Oklahoma?

I'm not saying it's impossible, but the references I've seen say that wolves disappeared in the Sooner State in the 1930s.

I saw a fox run across 41st between Sheridan and Memorial about a month ago.  Somebody told me they were released into the city to eliminate some vermin, but I'm not sure if that's true or not.  I also have seen a raccoon at 51st and Lewis several times.

Larger than coyotes, silver gray and confirmed by employees of the nearby medical clinic. About the size of a German police dog but the head was different. This is on the edge of a farm with wild turkeys, foxes, cows etc. that routinely amble through the area.

Used to see lots of beavers in the creek behind the 81st and Lewis Walmart. Haven't been around there in years so I don't know if they're still there.

Two giant falcons or hawks or something in my neighborhood in BA. Saw one snatch a bird out of mid-flight a few weeks ago. Impressive.

Those may be Mississippi Kites -- member of the raptor family. Somewhat common for the area I believe.

Interesting topic. I read the other day that most foxes in the US are in urban areas where there are few natural predators like coyotes, wolves, and feral dogs. I thought that was odd.

I saw two foxes at 29th and Yale a couple of weeks ago in broad daylight. One crossed the Yale (he looked like he knew what he was doing crossing the street) and met up with another one then they both disappeared behind a business. We have an owl in our yard. We didn't start seeing it until after the ice storm so I figured he was displaced.

I figure we didnt notice them because they were high up in trees that suddenly no longer exist.
Last saw them around where the dog's food bowl had been.

We have a whole family of bald eagles at 121st and Yale, in the belt between the road and the river.  The male is large enough to pick up small dogs.  I assume they feed on the abundant ranbow trout in the river [;)].

YES!  There are wolves.  There's a small pack near Sheridan and 121st.  You can hear them on some quiet nights and they have taken neighborhood pets.  I've seen two running across the field, a light grey and a darker grey/black.  They seem to be well fed.

There are new neighborhoods being developed, so I assume they will have to find a new home.

I have been very close to a coyote that I met while passing a sand bar on the Arkansas River. These were no coyotes. And the 121st Sheridan location is within a couple of miles of my sighting.

Just because they are no longer indigenous doesn't mean there might not be some strays or some runaway domestics that are surviving.

Any recent coyote or coyote-like sightings?

BTW, I havent seen or heard the owls that are around the Ranch Acres-Utica Square area since the ice storm.  May have something to do with the perches I last saw them on being gone...

This poor critter was caught at our shop a few weeks ago.  We have coons, skunks, and opossum around here (about 1/4 mile south of the Sinclair Refinery.)  One of our welders brought a trap in.  We've since asked him not to trap any more animals once we figured out animal control doesn't drop off wildlife somewhere out in the country.  FYI- QT taquitos apparently are tasty morsels to coons.

We are just close enough to the river and semi-wilderness between here and Turkey Mtn, that you will see all sorts of stuff around.

I saw a snowy owl in BA a couple of years ago - NS.  I was riding in a car and it took out of a tree and floated right along side for a few seconds, my jaw nearly hit the floorboard.

Also, within weeks, I woke up to some crazy screaming sound.  It turned out to be a tiny little owl sitting in the tree in the front yard.

I've noticed more hawks over the house than I used to.  Maybe feasting on what seems to be an increased populous of squirrels in my area of 27th and Yale.

Have some flying squirrels jumping tree to tree causing quite a bit of excitement for my two dogs.

I used to see fox in the Sears lot on 21st and Yale but it's been a while.

I also noticed quite a few more squirrels in my backyard than usual this year. My pecan tree wasn't too damaged, so I figured they probably abandoned my neighbors trees. LOL.

Send some of those hawks my way, please.

Definitely a baby possum. My daughter got to pet it in the cage and wanted to keep it. Bark is worse than the bite...for the possum that is.

Poor little guy, scared out of his wits.

I live at 41st and Riverside and drive between OSU Medical Center and home each night after 11. Good time to see fox running around.

One time I was at Riverside and Southwest Blvd around midnight and seen a fox run across Riverside and right after it was a jack russell terrier chasing it like the dickens. The chase was on!!! They ran off under the SW Blvd bridge and into the night. Hope the jack russell found his way home after that.
[:O]

The other night I seen 3 different coons run into storm drains at different places. It musta been a night out for them all.

My lhasa and a fox had a stare down right here by the house one night last summer. It was great and the fox finally just turned around and walked away. My dog was like "what the crap was that?!"

One more story. 2 years ago a friend of mine was going to adopt a dog, so we went to the animal shelter on Erie. When we went down the road to the shelter, we seen 2 yellow kittens playing by the side of the shelter road,I was sure someone had dumped them. Well we went to the shelter and it was closed. We left and as we approached the kittens a hawk suddenly swooped down and snatched one of the kittens up and flew off!!We were so shocked to have seen it happen right before our eyes!! I was raised in the country so I understand this stuff but my city raised friend was freaked out!!

"I could hear her screaming as she was being carried away."

How bad would that suck?

When I lived out at 105th & Yale, I heard stories about small dogs getting "airlifted".  At the time we had a rather large Yorkie.

One of our friends down the block had a 6 or 7 pound Shih Tzu.

She called the house one morning hysterical:

"Gizzie's gone!  Gizzie's gone!  I can't find her?"

I guess I didn't realize how loud I'd made the sound effect, but my wife was ready to kill me when she got off the phone.

I was making raptor sound effects in the back-ground and I guess her friend heard the "eeek, eeeek, rawwwwk, rawwwwkk!"

Some people who bought two of our Yorkie pups lost them to a couple of coyotes who scaled an 8 ft wall, not fence, to get into their backyard near 101st & Sheridan a few years back.

That is quite a story- I guess after dark wildlife gets more active. I have not seen much wildlife where I live, but on the rural sections of the local jogging trails I have seen alot of deer, turkeys and many kinds of birds, and even alot of black snakes that have a stripe on their back I dunno if they are poisonous or not so I keep my distance-- this is during the daylight hours. Who knows what goes on after dark.

Something new for me.

I was getting into my truck yesterday evening about 5:45 when one of the flying squirrels landed feet from me in the yard.  That was a surprise.

The bigger surprise was seconds later a hawk landed on the squirrel and assisted it to shed its mortal coil.

I was attempting to get a picture of it but alas, I am too slow and the bird was too quick.  Anyway, that's my Marlin Perkins moment.

Wonder if the hawk had dropped him...

I've seen a fox at 21st and Riverside when running in the morning and also in my neighborhood (Patrick Henry area).  I grew up outside of Tahlequah and I believe there are more critters in Tulsa than in the country, especially squirrels!  The eagles are beautiful on Riverside, have you gone to the webcam at their nest?

Can someone post a link to the eagle's webcam?

[:D]

I am sure living right here by the river, we get a lot of wildlife because the river supports it quite well. Most of the fox I see around here at night are either running to or from the river. Then there are the ducks and geese.

I see a fox about once a month. Of course there are squirrel everywhere, but my daughter has a "favorite" squirrel. She has named him squirley, he has a tail that is just a nub and he will come real close to you, but when he runs away, he is like a jet. I seen him today by the trash cans.

I seen 3 hawks or eagles, I'm not sure what they were, soaring above 41st and Peoria yesterday, they were really high so I am not sure what they were, but they were really beautiful.

As you can tell, I love wildlife and am always paying attention for an opportunity for a siting.

I have 2 dogs,(dalmation and lhasa-mix) and a macaw parrot at home. They are all precious to me.

What kinds of pets do you all have?

Lots and lots of nocturnal bunnies in my neighborhood (Holiday Hills). They all do the "if-I-remain-motionless-maybe-the-ugly-humans-won't-see-me" bit in the front yard.

Have also seen plenty of skunks along the treeline of the Riverside trails...usually very early morning.

They say there are no wolves in Oklahoma.  They also say there are no mountain lions, but that is a lie.  There are mountain lions living in the Ouachitas.  I've heard them scream.

I saw another fox a few months ago at about 45th and Lewis.  I've seen the raccoon near my apartment several times recently.  Big fella.  Once he took a couple of steps towards me which sorta freaked me out.  He's apparently not scared of humans.

I don't know about Mountain Lions in Tulsa, but in parts of California they are all over and have attacked joggers. One woman jogger was attacked and I think she died while running on some mountain trail a few years ago. The Mountain Lions go down to where the homes are too.

One of my rowing partners and I were just finishing up a row this morning when we saw a red fox on the north dock down at the boat house.  He went back up the ramp after getting a drink, then proceeded south along the river bank foraging as he went.

I was not aware of this, but apparently the foxes are fond of shoes and have stolen a few over the years from rowing club members.  That was my partner's biggest concern that none of our shoes had gone missing.  There were also a couple of cats wandering the west bank this morning as well.

The big Oktoberfest tent was coming down as I left the parking lot this morning kinda wish it was a 10 day event like the fair [:(]

I saw one running down Cheyenne Ave on Saturday. I think the Tulsa Run(ners) scared it up out of the river.

"The mountain lion photographs were taken between 5 and 6 a.m. on Dec. 22 and 23. State wildlife officials say it’s one of the rare instances of a confirmed sighting of a mountain lion in Oklahoma.

He speculates the mountain lion must have been traveling the river bottom and followed deer and turkey scent to his corn feeder, where the trail camera was located."

It's not that rare.  I have heard plenty of stories (and from people who don't believe in big foot).  I just saw a picture of one in a backyard in Madill from last summer maybe.

I heard a single scream/roar of a big cat both nights while camping last Fall, at Washington Irving Cove South on Keystone Lake. The first night I wasn't sure as it woke me up. The next night I was awake , drying up leaks in the tent when I heard it.

Nice photo, I see them from time to time when I take walks at night.  I haven't caught one sight of one during the day yet..

If you're getting raccoons in the attic, you need to call The Skunk Whisperer PRONTO!!! Like before they start having babies up there! http://www.totalwildlifecontrol.com/ -- Tell them I sent you. Ned's a really good guy and he won't hurt the animals. He's all about exclusion and making your home unattractive to wildlife.

Sonic the Fox, who was living behind the Sonic Drive-in at 15th & Lewis, was trapped and sent to Wild Heart Ranch to have a bad case of mange treated.  Im actually sort of hoping they bring him back to the neighborhood as we've gotten used to having him around (and catching rats and mice).

We have a couple of raccoons, and one old cranky possum in the neighborhood.  Always fun to see them.

I wondered whatever happened to that dude when the TV show didn't happen.  He moved to Florida...guess there's more critters

Yes, he got divorced, sold all his belongings and move to an island in Florida. He's very happy in his new life.

Edited to add: The TV show *did* happen but it was not what Ned wanted. Animal Planet hired some buffoon to play the part of an employee and damaged Ned's reputation. It was pretty bad.

You should see all the wildlife in our backyard, there's a large arroyo behind us.  We have a playful fox family which is always good for a laugh when they come trotting by.
