Wantland Stadium, University of Central Oklahoma

The stadium has permanent seating to accommodate 10,000.

OSSAA to discuss a vote on  three year contract to host 11-man football state championships at Wantland Stadium.  If the contract is approved, the likely dates for games this year would be December 4-5 for Classes 6A-I to 3A and Dec. 12 for Classes 2A and A.

Wantland Stadium, if approved is on the campus of the University of Oklahoma; it will become the site of the association's 11-man football championships for Classes 6A-I to A championships for the next three years.

OSSAA have expressed the need to have a centralized championship site, something the Oklahoma Football Coaches Association (OFCA) along with numerous others have pursued since 2017.

On a day we learned eight NCAA regionals and championships will come to our state from 2023-26 — in addition to the Women’s College World Series, which OKC has locked in for the long term — there was jubilation in many locales. OSU landed three events in Stillwater. Ditto for OU in Norman. Tulsa even scored a big event, the wrestling championships in 2023.

But nothing was bigger than OKC getting that basketball regional.--Oklahoman, October 15, 2020

NCAA events

On Wednesday, the NCAA announced sites for most of its 2023-26 championships and regionals. In addition to the Women's College World Series, a permanent championship held in Oklahoma City, the state received eight events.

Here's a look at what will be coming to Oklahoma in the coming years:

Event, Location

2022 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championship, Stillwater/OSU Cross Country Course

     2023 Wrestling Championship, Tulsa/BOK Center

     2023 Women’s Gymnastics Regional, Norman/Lloyd Noble Center

2023 Men’s Golf Regional, Norman/Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club

     2024 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, Stillwater/Greenwood Tennis Center

2025 Women’s Golf Regional, Norman/Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club

     2025 Men’s Golf Regional, Stillwater/Karsten Creek

Will Thunder fans be allowed in the downtown arena when the NBA returns December 22, 2020?

Tom Anderson, special projects manager in the office of Craig Freeman, Oklahoma City's city manager, said multiple plans for reopening Chesapeake Energy Arena for NBA basketball have been developed, taking into consideration a range of contingencies.  A final decision rests first on an assessment of the health risks to fans, players and staff, he replied.

"The city, the Thunder and [building manager] ASM Global are all committed to being able to host events, especially NBA games, as safely as possible,"

Dr. Dale Bratzler of OU Medicine said he had not seen the Thunder's plans, but that substantially limiting seating capacity and creating socially distanced "pods" for immediate family members likely would be among them.  Masks will have to be mandatory, because a crowd of people, even physically distanced, that are yelling and cheering without a mask can spread aerosols and droplets a long ways.

Grip specialist Jon Shyock, center with cowboy hat, works with students on scene setup at Prairie Surf Studio in downtown Oklahoma City. The food truck and string lighting are a set that will be shot as a nighttime scene. Oklahoman[PROVIDED]

The training, which includes a full film production, started Tuesday and marked the first use of sound stages at Prairie Surf Studio (formerly the Cox Convention Center).

A $160,000 CARES Act grant is helping launch a nonprofit job training program to meet an increasing demand for workers needed to produce films in Oklahoma.

The film, “Running Behind,” is adapted from a script written by student Peyton Benge and the production itself was put on a fast track because of the requirement that the money be spent by Friday.--Oklahoman, January 1, 2020

Matt Payne, with Prairie Surf Media co-founder and actress Rachel Cannon, are set to host their first full movie production in early 2021 with the filming of “American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story,” starring Zachary Levi. They are talking with multiple studios to expand film operations in the state with the downtown studio as a base for multiple live-streaming movies and television shows.

NCAA 64-team softball Bubble hosted by Oklahoma City.

An economic pandemic impact bonanza for Oklahoma City.

BUBBLE BALL?  Why an OKC-only event could work for the NCAA softball tournament.

The NCAA announced earlier this week that it has decided to play the entire men’s basketball tournament this year in and around Indianapolis to make sure the event is held.

Hey, NCAA, do softball next.

I’ve got the perfect place for you: Oklahoma City...

...The NCAA softball tournament is a three-week event that starts with 64 teams. They are seeded into four-team, doubleelimination regionals, then the winners of the 16 regionals advance to twoteam, best-of-three super regionals. The eight winners of the super regionals advance to the WCWS.

So, how would May Madness in OKC work?

...Eight regionals would begin on Thursday, May 20, and finish on Saturday, May 22. Games on that final day would be played starting at 11 a.m. just as WCWS are on days when four games need to be played.

That’s because the other eight regionals would start at those same eight sites that evening. Those regionals would then conclude their three-day runs on Monday, May 24.

Not having all the regionals completed until Monday would be a change from the normal format — although weather delays occasionally push regionals and even super regionals into the first part of the week — but because teams aren’t traveling, finishing on Monday wouldn’t be nearly the strain that it would be in normal years.

Then, super regionals could take play the next weekend at the same eight sites or could be paired down to fewer sites.

...For the metro, we would get a softball-stravaganza that would be a balm for the loss of the WCWS last year. That was a complete and total gut punch, but we could have three full weeks of NCAA games. It would be great for the city and a boost to the economy.

Plus, there’d be lots of cool side benefits such as high schools hosting practices for tournament teams. Often, they practice at the small colleges, but with those fields being used for games, teams would likely use some of the great high school fields around the metro. Think of all the young players who would get a chance to see their softball heroes, to dream their own dreams.

Truly, though, the biggest beneficiaries to a softball bubble would be the teams. They had their seasons cut short a year ago. They didn’t get much of a regular season, much less a postseason. Having the NCAA tournament in one location would ensure it happens.

If everyone would keep that in mind, a softballpalooza would work. You can settle details and reach compromises and stomach changes if you remember why you’re doing this. If you want to make sure you have a tournament, you do a bubble.--Jenni Carlson, Oklahoman, 01/07/2020

OKC named among top 15 'best places to live and work as a moviemaker in 2021'

15.  Oklahoma City

Bold, innovative, and very funny Oklahoma City moviemaker Mickey Reece has averaged at least two films a year for a good decade — without leaving home. “A lot of out-of-town folks come to shoot in Oklahoma to take advantage of our 35% tax rebate incentive, but just within the last year or two (thanks to filmmakers working outside of the traditional system) our state has become more recognized, nationally, for our talent and work ethic,” he says. “We’ve created our own industry outside of Hollywood. Our actors are hungry, our crews are hungry and our locations are among the most unique in the country.”

The proof includes films like Reece’s festival darling Climate of the Hunter. And recent high-profile projects include Sean McNamara’s Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid. The region is also blessed with vintage theaters, passionate film societies, and the state’s largest film festival, deadCenter. Additionally, the new Prairie Surf Studios in the Cox Convention Center promises to house the largest clear-span sound stages in the Midwest.

And we all saw plenty of Oklahoma’s diverse landscapes, authentic small towns, and miles and miles of unspoiled land in Netflix’s Tiger King docuseries. Oklahoma and the tigers may be the only ones who came out looking good.

MovieMaker's annual list of "Best Places to Live and Work as a Moviemaker" included Oklahoma City at #15 of the big

cities list, outpacing cities such as San Diego, Seattle, Kansas City and Portland. The magazine highlighted not only the state's tax rebate incentive but also the

"talent and work ethic" of local crews, according to filmmaker Mickey Reece as quoted in the piece, as well as OKC's "vintage theaters, passionate film societies,

and the state’s largest film festival, deadCenter.

New Era for USA Softball in Oklahoma City  2020 - 2035
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma’s de facto homefield advantage at the Women’s College World Series could continue for a very long time.

Softball officials announced on Thursday that the WCWS will stay at Oklahoma City’s ASA Hall of Fame Stadium through 2020. It could remain through 2035, pending the completion of a four-phase renovation process agreed to by the NCAA and Oklahoma City.

Construction finished at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex just in time for a global pandemic.

And for USA Softball, having that complex open has been beneficial as other states canceled large events.

The City of Oklahoma City started the 4,000-seat addition at the complex in summer 2018, after that year's NCAA Women's College World Series. Construction paused for the 2019 WCWS then work continued on the $20.3 million project, that added many amenities to the complex, including more space and better technology for media, kitchen space, restrooms and elevators. The money was part of the 2017 voter-approved general obligation bond package.

The Alliance and USA Softball are now partners, so more events from the league could be coming to Oklahoma City.

While there’s a lot still being discussed for 2021’s events at the complex, including possible Team USA exhibition games before the Olympics.

The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents approved revised design phase plans and updated programming information for a new $22 million softball facility.?

It is proposed that the new softball home be located at the northwest corner of Jenkins Avenue and Imhoff Road, approximately one-half mile south of the current facility. This plan alters the previous masterplan for renovation of the present location to allow space for implementation of the required programmatic facility elements, make further use of adjacent athletics facilities and take advantage of existing parking in the immediate vicinity.

The new stadium is projected to seat 3,000 fans, more than double the capacity of the current facility.

In recent years, the current OU Softball Complex has been stretched beyond its seating capacity of 1,378. On May 26, with the addition of temporary bleachers, a record crowd of 1,927, one of 18 sellouts during the 2018 season, watched the Sooners defeat Arkansas 9-0 in the NCAA Super Regional championship game. That kind of interest has stressed not only the seating capacity, but also the services available to those visiting the facility. It is projected that the new facility will have capacity for 3,000 fans.?

In terms of other fan amenities, the current concept, which is subject to updates and alterations, includes three concessions stands with a total of 11 points of sale (an increase of nine) and six restrooms (an increase of 60 fixtures). Other changes include a 10,000 square-foot indoor practice facility, which is nearly double the size of the current facility, and several team spaces including a training room, locker room and classroom.

Oklahoma City's opportunity to host a 64 team WCWS bubble.

Four softball fields at USA Hall of Fame Stadium Complex.

Hall of Fame Stadium seats 13,000

"We are already the home of the Women’s College World Series, of course. Got an expanded and renovated stadium all ready for it, too. But we’ve got way more than that — we’ve got the ability to do the whole NCAA softball tournament.

Now, this might seem like a pie-in-the-sky idea. But as one person who works in the world of softball reminded me, everyone is thinking outside the box right now. When it comes to ideas about how to give teams an opportunity to play, nothing is too far fetched...

...The NCAA softball tournament is a three-week event that starts with 64 teams. They are seeded into four-team, double-elimination regionals, then the winners of the 16 regionals advance to two-team, best-of-three super regionals. The eight winners of the super regionals advance to the WCWS.

So, how would May Madness in OKC work?

The biggest issue would be where everyone plays and how our available facilities are put to use, but we have enough high-quality fields as long as a couple small tweaks are allowed...

...By the way, I’m told the metro has plenty of hotel rooms to accommodate teams and ancillary tournament personnel. Everyone might not get to stay in downtown OKC, but if the fields at OU and OSU are used, for example, everyone might not want to stay downtown.

Another aside, I wouldn’t allow OU or OSU to play on their home fields. That’s how the men’s basketball tournament is doing business — games will be held at Indiana, Purdue and Butler, but those teams won’t play on their home courts if they make the tournament — so that rule could easily apply to softball.

Listen, I know this plan would require sacrifices. Sacrifices by the teams. Sacrifices by the NCAA. Sacrifices by the facilities.

But the benefits are numerous.

For the NCAA, travel costs would be slashed. That’s the tournament’s biggest expense, and while lodging costs would rise, not having to buy hundreds of plane tickets on short notice for players, coaches and support staff to jet all around the country would make up the difference.

For the metro, we would get a softball-stravaganza that would be a balm for the loss of the WCWS last year. That was a complete and total gut punch, but we could have three full weeks of NCAA games. It would be great for the city and a boost to the economy.--Jenni Carlson, January 7, 2021 Oklahoman

Oklahoma City has an opportunity to really host an event (64-team WCWS softball tournament) with an economic impact boost to our city's hotels that could be a real shot-in-the-arm with out-of-state money flowing into our local economy.

The eight-team WCWS is set for June 3-9 at the newly expanded stadium.

This will be the 30th WCWS in Oklahoma City and the first since a stadium renovation after the 2019 event expanded the permanent seating at Hall of Fame Stadium from 2,000 to 9,000. Fan capacity for the event is more than 13,000 after the addition of temporary bleachers behind the outfield wall and standing-room-only spots.

ESPN will televise all games involving the eight team tournament in Oklahoma City.

2021 Women's College World Series Attendance Figures:

Official capacity of the revitalized Hall of Fame Stadium is 12,300.

Total attendance for the entire Women’s College World Series registered at 115,514, and averaged out to 11,551 people per session.

The 2019 edition of the Women’s College World Series set an all-time record for fan attendance, according to numbers confirmed by the NCAA.

A total of 78,361 fans watched the WCWS in-person at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, with an average of more than 8,700 fans in attendance per game. Hall of Fame Stadium’s official sell-out figure is 8,400.

WCWS by the numbers:  115,514 - 78,361 = 37,155

With both state universities in the final eight team tournament; Oklahoma City out-of-state economic impact wasn't as robust as it would have been had this been an all out-of-state elite eight.

Oklahoma Sooners at Tulane Green Wave game has been moved to Norman.

August 30, 2021

First and foremost, my thoughts are with those in Southern Louisiana impacted by Hurricane Ida and to all those bravely responding to help.   The health and safety of our citizens and of our first responders will remain our primary focus.

In light of the catastrophic damage sustained by the City of New Orleans and, after consulting with our emergency preparedness and response teams at the institutional, local and state levels, we will relocate our September 4 football game against the University of Oklahoma to Norman, Oklahoma.  While game time will remain 11:00 AM, television information and other game-specific details will be announced by the University of Oklahoma.   We appreciate the understanding, support and communication with the University of Oklahoma, especially Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione.

30,000 seat, Yulman Stadium, New Orleans

We have moved all Tulane athletic department operations to Birmingham, Alabama, including our student-athletes, and we will remain in Birmingham until it is safe to return to New Orleans.  I want to thank UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram, Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne and the City of Birmingham for receiving our student-athletes, coaches, staff and families.

The status of future home competitions in football and volleyball will be determined in the days ahead.

Once again, our thoughts and prayers are with all of those impacted by this devastating storm.

Wednesday, the NCAA’s Division I Competition Oversight Committee approved changes to the schedule. Last month, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel for the sport announced the approval of instant replay for the upcoming season...

The scheduling change will be in place for next year’s WCWS in Oklahoma City.

The scheduling change, taking the tournament from a seven-day event to nine days, eliminates the doubleheader for teams that lose on the tournament’s opening day, and adds a day of rest between the end of bracket play and the best-of-three championship series.

The additional two days for the WCWS will also increase the economic impact of the event for the Oklahoma City metro area. The seven-day tournament had an estimated $24 million economic impact, according to the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau. --
Excerpts:  Oklahoman, September 8, 202

This will be a big economic boost for Oklahoma City area hotels and restaurants who host the tournament teams with two days being added to the tournament.  Much will depend on how many teams extend their stay for the completion of the tournament.

The day the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon announced runners would need to be vaccinated or tested for COVID.

As the Memorial Marathon prepares to make its in-person return this weekend, it will look different in many ways. The races will be spread over two days instead of being run on one. The starts will be spaced out as will the runners at the starting line in an effort to allow social distancing.

Runners must wear masks in starting corrals, as well as on shuttle buses, after crossing the finish line and in any of the medical tents. They can remove their masks while running, but wherever people might congregate, masks will be required.--Oklahoman, October 21, 2021--Carlson

If you get to Tulsa area sometime, here is a place that we just went to in Broken Arrow.  I love Cattleman's but this place puts it to shame!   With prices to match!!  Nothing the group tried was less than perfection - something almost unheard of from a restaurant.  Our (2) little corner of this added up to something north of $175.  Probably won't do that very often!  On a scale with the now defunct Abacus in Dallas area.   And no, we did not try the $200 a bottle wine....

Rodeo Cinema planning big for future with first full executive team

Quote
The hope going forward will be to use the Rodeo space as a place to bridge that divide and to offer OKC a venue for arts, entertainment, and culture of all kinds . . .

. . . In addition to regular screenings of cult classics, forgotten gems, and first-run indies, they say that many of the theater’s biggest successes have been their frequent event nights, often featuring actors and filmmakers coming through to present screenings of their films and host Q&A’s and discussions for fans. The team intends to continue those kinds of events while also expanding widely into the kind of community-and-culture-driven content that will further their standing as a non-profit arts institution for the city.

Lunar New Year is celebrated by many Asian cultures. Its beginning is marked by the first new moon on the lunar calendar, which typically occurs between
January 21 and February 20. Called Tet by the Vietnamese, Chunjie by the Chinese, Solnal in Korean, and Losar in Tibetan, the event lasts for several days,
concluding on the first full moon of the lunar calendar.

Report on dedication mass for Blessed Stanley Rother, February 17, 2023

Despite altering the dedication date, there were pews that had not arrived or been installed, although they had hoped the
interior of  the Rother Shrine Church would be finished in time for his entombment.

The next steps will be to move the Oklahoma City Archdioceses Cathedral from the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perceptual Help
to the 2,000 seat Blessed Rother Shrine Church in Oklahoma City with eventual application to Vatican City to make the Blessed
Stanley Rother Shrine Church to become an official Basilica with hopes that the final miracle can be substantiated to make
Blessed Stanly Rother 'St. Stanley Rother."

Once he becomes St. Stanley Rother, the Shrine will have to be renamed.

Holy Angels Catholic Church has been closed in south Oklahoma City.  The two parishes will be combined as 'Sacred Heart Parish
and the two congregations will make up the Rother Shrine Church.

       The Tulsa King

Paramount Plus Series Starring Sylvester Stallone Will Film In Tulsa & Oklahoma City

Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) is producing a scripted drama for the Paramount network called The Tulsa King starring Sylvester Stallone.

The story is about an older gangster who served time to protect mafia bosses then relocates to Tulsa after prison and starts his own mob crew. Filming has been taking place in OKC and Tulsa. Stallone has been sighted at Penn Square Mall and other places around the state.

Just saw that they will be filming at this empty saloon at 4120 Newcastle Road. Permit is for a new sign to be placed on the building throughout filming.--OKCTalk.com--04-22-2022.

Also being shot at Prairie Surf Media Studios, Oklahoma City.  Full link:  https://www.poncacitynow.com/paramount-plus-series-starring-sylvester-stallone-will-film-in-tulsa-oklahoma-city/ (https://www.poncacitynow.com/paramount-plus-series-starring-sylvester-stallone-will-film-in-tulsa-oklahoma-city/)

I guess they can go back to calling it "Kansas City King" since it decided not to have anything to do with production in Tulsa or Oklahoma.  Not that there was anything to do with Tulsa in the first place.

I watched 3 or 4 episodes and just didn't get into it. I also didn't really care for the way it tries to show Tulsa as part of the story in general. It just missed the mark. If you're going to do a show and call it "Tulsa King" at least get a good portion of Tulsa right for crying out loud.

Granted I'm a bit jaded about movies filmed in Tulsa. SE Hinton did the best job of using Tulsa as a backdrop for Tex, The Outsiders and Rumble Fish. Granted she is a native and I think that helped in developing the feel of those movies. I'd also include Weird Al's UHF.

From the Dallas Morning Snews:

Quote
Could it have anything to do with the hot weather? Possibly.

Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King is reportedly pulling up stakes from Oklahoma, and filming elsewhere for its second season on the Paramount+ series. Rachel Cannon, founder and co-CEO of Oklahoma City-based production company Prairie Surf Media confirmed to The Oklahoman that the production won’t return to film in Oklahoma.

Tulsa King star Sylvester Stallone took aim at the heat — or maybe Oklahoma in general — on Instagram.

“Being in Oklahoma has definitely prepared me for a lifetime in hell if I ever got sent there,” Stallone wrote in an exchange with comedian Andrew Dice Clay on July 24.

If it was the weather, Oklahoma City’s daytime temperature was higher than 90 degrees on 24 days in July, according to Weather.com. Tulsa was hotter hitting at least 100 degrees on 18 days. July was the most oppressive part of Tulsa King’s three-month filming period.

Co-star Barry Corbin noted the heat, too, comparing it to Dallas-Fort Worth’s.

“It’s no worse than it is here, but it’s miserable here, too,” Corbin said in July.

Season one showrunner Terence Winter told the Tulsa World last week that he and the crew had no idea how hot it would be.

“I don’t think anybody did,” Winter said. “When we first got there, it was freezing and then, within days, it was 106 degrees and then stayed that way for like five months. You guys are probably used to that, but we were like, ‘What the hell just happened?’”

Most filming took place in Oklahoma City because of sound stage availability, Winter said.

Paramount+ has not announced when or where filming is expected to begin for the series’ second season.

Tulsa King could be the first major Sheridan project to move from the region in which it’s set.

101 Studios, which produces Tulsa King, is headquartered in Beverly Hills.

Jeanette Stanton, director of the Oklahoma Film + Music Office, told The Oklahoman the show has not resubmitted its application for the state film incentive.

“After they [were] renewed, they did not contact our office about filming Season 2 here,” she said.

In Tulsa King, Stallone stars as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a 75-year-old New York gangster newly released after serving a 25-year prison sentence. Manfredi is banished by his former boss’ son to Tulsa, where he sets out to establish a new criminal empire.

Tulsa King is one of several projects in the works by Sheridan, the Weatherford resident who co-created Yellowstone and its sequels. It’s the largest scripted television series to be produced in Oklahoma using the incentives under the Filmed in Oklahoma Act of 2021, The Oklahoman reported.

Sheridan has done filming for Yellowstone in 1883 in the Fort Worth area. His latest project, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, is being filmed in North Texas.

Stanton said Tulsa King will leave a mark on the state’s film industry.

“There’s so much wonderful content being made [here], and we’re not suffering at all for applications,” she said. “Oklahoma’s definitely on everybody’s map.”
