Oilrigs in the Gulf of Mexico were shut down and evacuated. That caused oil prices to spike yesterday. It also caused the price of gasoline to jump 14-cents a gallon here overnight to $2.65. ...but QT had already raised their prices by 3pm Tuesday. That 14-cent hike must be rocking the nation: Gasoline prices in Oklahoma have risen 0.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.60/g Monday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 2,294 stations in Oklahoma. That is due to inflation and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, AAA Spokesperson, Leslie Gamble, said. But have you noticed prices are higher in Tulsa than in other cities across Oklahoma? Tulsa County is about nine cents higher than the state average and 13 cents higher than OKC. AAA Spokesperson, Leslie Gamble, said it's not unusual for areas with fewer pumps to have higher prices. "What we also see are areas where there are fewer, and perhaps larger retailers, which could be a factor in Northeast Oklahoma," Gamble said. "They're not concerned as much about competition. They're not trying to beat out the others around them because they own all the gas stations." QuikTrip has more than two dozen stores in the Tulsa area. Those in the oil and gas industry say Tulsa should have lower gas prices because the refineries in our backyard create lower transportation costs. Those costs, combined with low taxes on gas, make Oklahoma the fourth lowest for prices nationwide, according to AAA. "Right now it's a good time as far as prices go, but it's a very concerning time because the prices are somewhat artificially inflated because of all the activity that's going on in Ukraine," said Dewey Bartlett, President of Kenner Oil and Gas Company. Russia is the third-largest oil and gas producer behind the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, Bartlett said, and we depend on them somewhat for our energy. |
