Title: Tally's 61 & Sheridan
Post by: citizen72 on December 24, 2017, 11:53:16 pm
Well Tally's expansion south opened at 61st and Sheridan in the last few days. Tried to eat there last night. Long, long wait. Has anyone tried them? Parking at premium. If they are as good at the one on 11th street look out.

The lowest of bars.

Tally's has a huge following. Since they've opened, they have outlived at least a thousand restaurants in Tulsa including some extremely highly-rated places. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they must be doing something (many things) right to be in business this long and have this loyal of a following.

I've been satisfied with the meals I've eaten at Tally's over the years even if it is not always super special or anything. The environment is great for what it is also.

They did a good job making it look like a retro diner. And next door some other retro-themed liquor store is opening. Nice to see a theme developing there. That might be my favorite south-Tulsa corner with La Roma, Savoy, Charlie's Chicken (Well, it used to be good!), the Hussar, In the Raw (with a great view) and now Tally's and a retro theme!

Just go to Savoy until the crowds slow down.   I bet you would go back to Savoy after trying Tally's....

Long Live Cinnamon rolls!

It is on the southwest corner and used to be the Silver Flame steakhouse.

You missed some restaurants on that corner. Goldie's hamburgers, Chopsticks (asian food), Oklahoma Joe's (BBQ), Rincon (mexican), Boston Deli, and Whataburger are all on that corner and on the southeast part of the intersection with In the Raw (sushi) is Mandarin Taste. By La Roma is an excellent Daylight donuts. That is 12 restaurants less than 100 steps from each other.

My favorite south Tulsa restaurant corner is probably one mile north.

In the Farm shopping center we have the best Italian place in Villa Ravenna, the best German place in Margaret's, the only Japanese buffet in Yutaka, the original Billy Sims BBQ, the first Mazzio's Pizza, Ron's hamburgers, Great Harvest bakery, and a Subway. Across the intersection is Rib Crib BBQ, the Spudder steakhouse, Sam's Southern Eatery (fish), and a Little Caesars pizza and a donut shop. Across the street to the west of them is Asian Chef (carryout), Taco Bueno, Papa Murphy's pizza (takeout) and Uncle Bentley's.

That is 17 restaurants on the same corner.

I should've said "intersection". A lot of good stuff right there. I went to Silver Flame back when it was open and so it surprised me when I saw the new Tally's was there instead. I haven't had Mandarin Taste, Chopsticks, Rincon or Boston Deli.

Yeah, that's a good location for food. Yutaka is good for a buffet. Margaret's is great. The Spudder makes a delicious steak but haven't been in a while! I like Sam's also but go to the one on 11th. I hate Italian but I know I need to try Villa Ravenna.

Margaret's is great.   (51st, not 61st - same with Yutaka)

Yutaka was a huge mess when we went - literally every single dish that was sitting on the steam table, even with steam coming out around the edges, was room temperature.  Did not stick around for that "tasty" little bout of food poisoning followed by hospitalization.  Told the lady at the cash register and she pretty much literally went, "ho-hum..."   Like "tell me something I don't know..."

Spudder's was great but we thought they were gone.  Oh, well,...   Can't possibly be the same people running it - they would be about 100 years old by now.

Same guys that have been there for as long as I remember.   The Dad is over at Lucky's a lot, now the son is mostly running Spudders.

John?   Can't remember his last name...  Good guy.  May have to go back.

Well, time to have my weekly "piss off the internet" moment...  Went to Tally's new place today about 11 this morning.  SWMBO got some breakfast thing called the Bomb - she says it was good !  It looked good and the one little nibble I had of it was very good, I thought.

I had chicken fried steak, since USA Today and KTUL both said it is the "best" in Oklahoma...  Both either blatantly lied or are wilfully ignorant.  It ain't even close to the best... it's not bad and in Texas or somewhere in the northeast it may well be the best available, but in Oklahoma - not even.   Nelson's and Del Rancho are both much better.  Even the chain - Charleston's - is better than Tally's.  And while I haven't had it in a while, and don't know if they still do, Savoy used to make excellent chicken fried.   And the new Cotton Patch out in Broken Arrow has great chicken fried, too!  Have had it 3 times since they opened.   So if we didn't have 5 better ones, it could be best in Oklahoma, but we do have them.  Like I said - it ain't bad, it just isn't 'best'.    We have an embarrassment of riches in Chicken Fried Steak right now in this state!   I think that is a great thing!

The rolls are exceptionally good.  Sides; baked potato was good as were the brown beans.

The cinnamon rolls are huge and pretty darn good, too!  Still eating on it here at 9 pm this evening!  Not quite like Savoy, but then I have yet to meet a cinnamon roll I really didn't like very much.

Parking - what a nightmare catastrophe!  Whoever was doing site choice should have kept looking - that is an unmitigated disaster.  Maybe it will get better after the opening rush dies down some.  It almost drove us away, but got into a not-really-a-parking-space right next to their sign out at the corner.

Like the building.  It's always nice to visit 1957 again.  Servers are working like dogs, are already pretty good, and will become more polished as they gain experience in the new environs.  The 11th street place had great servers the last few times we went, so this should get there too.

Overall, Cotton Patch as diner food is gonna out-Tally,  Tally's.  Even if it is a chain...  CP's weakness is no breakfast!
