Interesting crowd, as in I would have expected a lot more hispanics (I would have guessed perhaps a quarter to a third of the fans and supporters to be hispanic).  Also keep noticing the logo, lettering, etc. has a European leaning vs "neutral" or "American" look.  Hope this isn't a club that isn't playing to that demographic, and future demographic trends, as an ever growing market for football fans.  Would be a missed opportunity to secure a solid future.  Good turnout regardless.

Next two home games are on Saturday, June 1st at 7pm (tailgate 3 hours prior to match time) and Sunday, June 2nd at 2pm (hangover tailgate TBA!)
You can buy tickets online here:  https://www.tulsa-athletics.com/tickets/

We are playing the two Houston teams on the road this Friday and Sunday.

Actually, Artist, a "quarter to a third" is a pretty decent ratio, similar to what I've seen at MLS games.
The logo is taken from the Boston Avenue Athletic Club.  In soccer circles, we affectionately call them a "pub team"...
http://thecup.us/2013-us-open-cup-qualifying-boston-avenue-ac-wins-another-oklahoma-title-qualifies-for-usasa-region-iii-finals/
And when I see the spelling of Tulsa with an old-english font, it brings back memories of the Tulsa Tribune...

Do I think we could have done better outreach to get hispanic fans?  Absolutely.
I wish we could have had general admission tickets available through Las Americas and Morelos.
The lease on Drillers Stadium was signed in March.
Our staff is primarily a mixture of college interns and volunteers.
We targeted our core customers at soccer games and tournaments, connected with our fans using facebook, and let the chips fall where they may.
We're closing in on 2,000 "likes" on the team's facebook page and 400 on our Ultras supporters page.

I believe our July 2nd game against the Club America U20's will help generate a lot of buzz.  http://www.clubamerica.com.mx/

It was disappointing not to have a group of latino fans with trumpets, drums, etc...
***We had a green trombone and a trumpet on Saturday, but we desperately need a drummer or two...
Our supporters logo (the pirate-like skull with wrench crossbones-- or maybe horns? that IMO looks like the a Marvel Comics redesign of the Grateful Dead skull... lol) is one that hardcore soccer fans of any ethnicity or nationality will recognize and appreciate.
"Ultras" is usually only reserved for hardcore supporters, and I associate it with the Polish fans at Chicago Fire games.  http://www.fireultras98.com/
But many others use it too... http://z6.invisionfree.com/UltrasTifosi/index.php?

Most of the 60 or so NPSL teams do not publish attendance figures because their fan support usually numbers in the hundreds.
Our opening day attendance is the highest in the league so far this season -- almost identical to Chattanooga FC's home opener http://www.chattanoogafc.com/news/chattanooga-football-club-wins-5-0-in-13-opener.  Before they announced our attendance at 2,738, I would have guessed 3500.

NPSL is one of two leagues in soccer's fourth division...
1.  MLS
2.  NASL  http://nasl.com/index.php
3.  USL-PRO  http://www.uslsoccer.com/teams/
4.  NPSL & PDL  http://www.nationalpremiersoccerleague.com/teams/index_E.html    http://www.uslsoccer.com/teams/

I'm just grateful to have owners who "get it" and a stadium that serves beer.
No more attempts to establish a team at high school stadiums like East Central or Bishop Kelley or the Union 8th Grade Center... a good fan experience requires more than that.
Which is why I believe many of the fans at our first game will come back and bring their friends next time!

Any chance the team will reach out to former Roughneck players and have them come out and introduced to the crowd?
It would be awesome to see some of the old players again.

Charlie Mitchell was introduced prior to our first game.
I thought Alan Woodward was supposed to be there, not sure...

The idea of having a "Roughnecks night" to honor the players and hoist a championship banner has been tossed around a bit... "to be continued"...

In other news, Tulsa Ultras Tailgate #2 "First Place Fiesta" will start a couple of hours before Saturday's 7pm start...
The theme for this tailgate in honor of our boys taking the early lead in the standings is "First Place Fiesta!" Please spread the word to all of your friends. This is a family friendly event as long your kids are ok with people drinking.
 - This tailgate will still be a BYOB event, and as always we ask you not to bring bottles.
 - Food wise we will have tacos there to eat, but feel free to bring any other of your favorite Mexican food entrees and side dishes like salsa and guacamole.
 - Also you are more then welcome to setup your own tailgating area around your car like we did for week one.
For Sunday's 2pm kickoff, we will setup at 12:05pm for Tulsa Ultras Tailgate #3 "Recovery Session"    8)

Also, I believe Dr Kern will continue with this for all of our home games...
Quote
"Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center and Dr. Thomas Kern would like to announce that a Sports Medicine injury clinic going to be held prior to the Athletics home games."
"Dr. Kern will be available to assess new injuries for youth soccer players two hours prior to kickoff. For the initial game, Dr. Kern will start seeing patients at 4 o'clock at the Athletics ticket office at the stadium."
"In order to help as many people as possible, Dr. Kern will only be able to see one problem per patient, and will not be able to assess chronic or long-term issues. The clinic is open for youth soccer players, age 4-18."

CFC (edit: Chattanooga FC) is not only chasing a Southeast title and a spot in the four-team playoff to determine who represents the South Conference in the NPSL championships, it's also trying to host the South playoff. The division champion with the most points will host and as of Friday the points leader is Tulsa Athletics of the South Central with 16 points.

No other division leader has more than eight points, so it will likely come down to Tulsa and the South division winner.

We had a good time on Saturday night. There was a crowd of 3,500 announced.

Our own Rufnex sang the national anthem (great job) and they honored Victor Moreland before the game.

It was a very physical game. The teams don't like each other and the referees let the pushing get out of control. In the second half, a skirmish broke out and two Tulsa players got ejected. They had to play the rest of the game down two players.

Tulsa had a 2 to 0 lead until Liverpool got a penalty kick to make it 2 to 1. Then, with just a minute or two to play they tied it up by taking advantage of the extra players. With less than a minute to play, a ball went put of bounds and was kicked away into the stands by a Tulsa coach. That infuriated the Liverpool team and one of their players attacked the coach on the sidelines. As the game ended a brawl broke out with many players on both sides fighting.

Tulsa had the bigger and faster team until they had to play down. Tulsa has an excellent goalie as well. You can see why they are still undefeated.

Admission was just five dollars and concessions were reasonably priced. Bottles of soda were $2.75 and cold cans of beer were $3.75. They had five food trucks including Mangino's, Pita Place, Siegi's and others selling everything including funnel cakes and corn dogs.

Looks like Tulsa is well on its way to establishing the area as a hotbed for soccer.

NASL of which Tulsa Roughnecks use to be a member will be expanding--OKC is its smallest member scheduled to enter the league in 2014 or 2015..  If NASL soccer becomes successful in OKC; it is a no brainer that Tulsa could return to the NASL  and renew a rivarly between two cities which is long overdue.

The last rivarlies between Oklahomas' two largest cities dates back to the Central Hockey League, Continential Basketball Association, American Association baseball and an exhibition game in soccer which was played in Ponca City which ended in a 1-1 tie between the Tulsa Roughnecks and the OKC Slickers.

Sports competition between Tulsa and OKC has always been healthy and entertaining.

...interview with the "Shoeless Joe Jackson" of the real Tulsa Roughnecks, Billy Caskey...

Quote
Sonny Dalesandro:         What are your thoughts on a team in Tulsa going by the name the Tulsa Roughnecks?

Billy Caskey:         Well, I don’t know how the fans would feel about that.  That’s a one off thing that’ll never happen again.  They’ll never resemble the Roughnecks that we had here, all those years ago.  I think the name should be put to rest and put down in history.

Victor Moreland:         Well said!  Put to rest, buddy, brilliant.

Sonny:         What are your thoughts on the Tulsa Athletics?

Billy Caskey:         The thing about it is it’s making an effort to get soccer back and put soccer on the map again in Tulsa.  I was here 20 years again, and I just watched Vic’s teams practice last night.  How much the kids know about soccer is unbelievable.  That, for me, is the legacy of the Roughnecks.  I hope your team does that and has your own legacy.  Soccer is a game for any size.  I watched a ten-year-old kid play just one touch.  A ten-year-old.  That doesn’t happen in Ireland.  You don’t see that.  Ten-year-olds want to dribble the ball the whole time.  This kid controlled it, and if he was seeing a first-time pass then he passed it, and he was playing against the older boys.  I had to go over and talk to that kid and told him I’d never seen a ten-year-old kid play like that, with a touch like yours.  He was all embarrassed, and probably couldn’t understand my accent.

Victor coaches both of my kids and their teams are both ranked in the top ten in the state for their age group.

If you have a kid in soccer, consider playing for the Tulsa Nationals.

OK I just gotta say it. Damn Ruf your pictures are huge! You have to scroll the equivalent of four pages per one post. Gotta hand it to you though. Since the admins took the add picture tab away a few years back. I still haven't figured out how to post any. So ginormous is whole lot better than adding none.

Also congrats on the progress you guys got going on out there. Saw the story on the news last night. Looking good.

Ruf is hosting them on facebook.

As far as making the images smaller, yeah, that'd be nice.  Add "Width=" or "height=" inside the IMG tag.

This way, you can fit more images on one line, and be a better net citizen.  Even half of the original size is an improvement

Thick red smoke hangs around the fans in their regular section, while hand-painted banners called ‘tifo’ (originally the Italian word for the phenomenon of supporting a sport team) hang from the level above.

I thought surely there would be a point in the match where the Ultras would get tired and sit down.
I was wrong.

If you haven't been out to see the Athletics play, then you really should come out this Friday and see the lads take on Joplin.  It's cheap entertainment, and it's really a blast.  7:30pm.  Do it.

Local media seem to have no problems showing highlights of college baseball games that don't involve any Oklahoma teams (TCU & Texas Tech?) but can't be bothered to show a single highlight of the Tulsa Athletics playing at the fairgrounds last Friday night... go figure... A's win, 4-0!

It's a bird... it's a plane... it's SUPER DAVE!!!

Thanks.  Kinda small crowd, but after the half looks like the stands filled in pretty well... we're hosting the playoff in a couple of weeks... hopefully got a shot at winning the whole ball of wax...

Won 6-0 last night (I hear the Dallas team received a sympathy tweet from Brazil)... All tickets $5 tonight...  https://www.choicesecure03.net/mainapp/SectionChart.aspx?qs=oUZmsMNWKg562ov2Hsi2FEDrsNLJLOsc2ewX0L1JyFrYIk7SUwOEfng1AEYN0nGGRsWudci003uC513jxbJTRh3WOYlhiCZy4ql0ri34mJo%253d
Oklahoma City's team lost the opener in a penalty kick tie-breaker... being fellow audubon enthusiasts, I believe our fans and the OKC players had a "bird exchange" while they were in their vans for their sad trip home....
