I like the idea of it being a developmental league for the NFL. The NFL needs a developmental league, other than the NCAA, where the teams can farm out their players much like minor league baseball. If Oklahoma were to get a team it damn well better be in Tulsa and not down the turnpike with the tailpipe suckers in OKC. Then the universities can get back to what they are supposed to be doing - educating people!

That said, I wonder about the theoretical business model versus Arena Football... back in 1984? we had Doug Williams as quarterback and the team was professional. 30 years later, in 2014, I wonder how a concept like that could work... presumably in larger non-NFL cities like Knoxville, Birmingham, Orlando, LA, Omaha, etc etc... travel costs? compared to what the Talons had the year before selling their team to San Antonio? There are a number of cities in the United States where a mid-major football league could survive. Take these cities on the west coast and midwest: Amarillo, Des Moines, Las Vegas, Little Rock, Omaha, Oklahoma City, Portland, Sacramento, San Jose, Shreveport, Tulsa and Wichita; any eight of these 12 cities could be a good starting base. Maybe someone will come up with a league where travel wouldn't be too expensive (mostly bus) and have another contract with a CBS sports affiliate. |
