(Reuters) - Oklahoma took a step toward allowing livestock owners to slaughter horses for food on Friday when the governor signed a bill that permits the practice, but processing plants must first be authorized by the federal government.

Governor Mary Fallin's action legalized the slaughter of horses so that their meat may be prepared and packaged for export. But slaughterhouses must get U.S. Department of Agriculture authorization, Fallin said.

The slaughter of horses for food had been illegal in Oklahoma since 1963 and was carried out only in Texas and Illinois until Congress stopped it in 2006. The congressional ban was lifted in 2011.

Fallin said horse slaughterhouses in Oklahoma would use more humane practices than those in Mexico because they would be inspected by federal authorities.

I still don't get what the big deal is, we have beef, chicken, and hog slaughter houses and thousands of unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized in our state every year.  What's the big deal about horses vs. any of the other animals?

You made a distinction between "slaughter" and "euthanized" there, Skye and Mary dont.

Our society regards horses and dogs differently than we do hogs and cattle.

Our society sees many things differently at one point, then there is change. Personally, I do not care about horse meat. I just like reading the conniption/freak out fest. I'm hearing about "self interest motivated", "conflicts of interest", "it's not what the majority wants".

Kinda like the freakout I saw yesterday over Googles Doodle being of Cesar Chavez instead of something regarding Easter.

Don't know.  We have a "Black Gold" coming out soon that has quite a punch to it.  It's a blackberry based competition style sauce (much bolder flavor).  If horse is indeed as tender and mild as most claim, it may be an excellent pallet for a bolder sauce.

Apparently in this thread we needed to discuss Easter and how Google thought it was a good idea to note Cesar Chavez day on its website. Since you didn't hear about it, apparently you never freaked out. Just move along.

Guess so.  To be honest, I didn't even remember who he was until I looked him up.  I wouldn't have even known about it if I'd have stayed away from FB on Sunday.

Look up Cesar Chavez Park, Phoenix, AZ on Google earth. Cesar Chavez High School next to it rivals some of the community colleges in the area.

Oklahoma lawmakers and Gov. Mary Fallin might have thought that quick passage of the horse slaughter bill would bring the controversy to an end. Instead, they probably just guaranteed that the controversy will continue to drag on, perhaps for years.

Pending federal legislation would ban the slaughter of American horses for human consumption and prohibit transporting them across the U.S. border to Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses.  The measure, called the Safeguard American Food Exports Act, is in part a response to reports that horse meat has been found in food products in Europe and wrongly identified as beef.

The reason Oklahoma leaders adopted a ban on horse slaughter for human consumption in Oklahoma, according to the report, was because it was found in what was supposed to be beef hamburgers in a couple of fast-food restaurants back in the early 1960s.

I don't have any issues with this, like they said many of the horses are in grim shape and if they are NOT slautered here they will go to another state for the slauter. Mary Fallin signed the bill.

Who cares what shape the horses are in?    If the slaughterhouse is willing to pay more than someone else to turn it into dog food/gellatin/glue/whatever than don't they deserve the ability to do it and turn a profit?

I don't see people up in arms trying to protect cows or pigs, but then again, I guess they aren't as cute.
