Title: Mi Tierra (6703 E 81 St Tulsa (just east of Sheridan))
Post by: Townsend on February 18, 2013, 11:55:28 am
I've not eaten there but ran across a review on Tulsa Food.

I was wondering if anyone had eaten there and what you thought.

Ate there a few months ago.  It's ok, but I ordered the empanadas and they were grease bombs.

I was going to go to this restaurant tonight. So I called to inquire if a reservation would be needed. The lady who answered the phone no "Speaka English!" What the L!  ???

Any last minute suggestions would be appreciated.

I suggest you see the fact that she didn't speak English as a plus. You won't be fed white boy texmex crap like what they shovel at Ted's.

Exactly right.   About 15 years ago while I was still living in Dallas, there was a radio ad where a woman with a Mexican accent came on and said something to the effect of "Don't go to that other Mexican restaurant, it's not real Mexican restaurant!  Come to XXXXXXX!  We got real Mexicans working here!"   I can't remember the name, but I remember it was excellent.

I have a reservation for 7. My Valentine had a Spanish speaking friend call and set it up for us.

So I text her back and asked. How are we going to order food? Point at pictures?

And for learning Spanish. Her friend has also loaned me the "Pimsleur Approach" Cds. I truly would like to speak Spanish.

I ate there a couple years ago and the food was amazing. Unlike anything else in Tulsa, for sure.

You guys live in BA, right?

For real Mexican, give Ramona’s on 71st between Aspen & Elm (next to Knotty Pine) a try some time.  Very authentic traditional Mexican.

Conan. I read your review on that and we are going to try them also. What's crazy is I had told her about them just this morning after I could not understand the Lady on the phone at Mi Tierra.

Just so you know. I told her that you are one of the few people who I trust when asking questions on public forums. I learned the hard way about the Bicycle I bought. Thanks again Bud.

Mi Tierra is not so much Mexican.  It is Peruvian. Really good ceviche

Worst Dinner experience I have ever had in my Life. The person who wrote that review must be a family member. The wait service was absolutely terrible. We felt as if we had interrupted the owners family gathering. Three tables were pushed together in the middle of the room and two others toward the back and front by the entrance. And members from these groups freely walked into and out of the kitchen area getting bottles of Champagne. They passed around a two litre bottle of some pink soda that they mixed with their Champagne.
A non English speaking man who looked like Jimmy Kimmels sidekick Guillermo, was doing some kind of join in Karaoke that was not working. At one point he went to the stock room and brought out four wine glasses for the big table and unpacked them from the box they were bought in from the store where they were purchased.

And the food. We ordered two appetizers and I am glad that we did. The portion size for both would not have filled even one of the little Hispanic children that were running around to each table mingling with all the patrons. (Highlight of the evening by the way)
I tried the Goat soup plate dinner. I felt adventurous. It had two bones and a small portion of meat. A big portion of scooped rice. Soupy sauce with beans and sweet peas and also sliced potatoes. My real question since I am not a World traveler. In Peru. Do they serve their food at room temperature? because this place sure does. Also, Hope that your not thirsty. We got one glass of tea each and never were offered a refill. It would have been different if we would have been drinking Champagne though.

My other half had their highly touted Ceviche plate dinner. It consisted of leaf lettuce covered with marinated onions and shrimp cocktail. A white potato cut long way and a can shaped sweet potato that wasn't sweet. And a little cup of what looked like uncooked popcorn kernels that tasted burnt. There was also some round white hominy looking vegetable that neither one of us could identify.
Another burning question is. How do you have a restaurant that has no cooking food smell? Also. How do you remove all taste from food? I'm talking about the food that I actually did recognize. Both the regular potato and the sweet had no flavor whatsoever. It was like eating a napkin. You know. Where you burp and it reminds you of nothing.

And to round off this wonderful Valentine meal. We basically had to flag down our non English speaking waitress who was the only one that we could see that actually acted like she worked there to get our ticket to pay and get the Smoot out of there. She brought the ticket and then disappeared to the kitchen. Ten minutes later we attempted to ask Guillermo if we needed to go up front to pay and he motioned yes. We get up front and low and behold there is the hardest working person in the joint and she attempts to charge our card. that was another five minutes because their machine was having trouble working.
All in all we got there at 7 and left about 8:45. And never to return. Can you give a place a Zero out of Four Stars?

We generally avoid going out on Valentine’s Day, too many others have the same idea so service is generally stretched thin.  We have started a tradition of inviting my mother over for dinner and we pamper her.  This year we did beef tenderloin and pan seared scallops.  So far we haven’t had a disappointing Valentine’s dinner experience.

That’s too bad to hear about the food, but saves us the trip of having to experience it!

Awesome!  They are a great family and really stuck their neck out opening the second location there. The original is in Inola and worth the drive.  Glad that drive is quite a bit shorter now.

Best of Luck to you. If someone in your party speaks Spanish it may work out. But I will never venture back into their establishment.
