Title: Isn't 28 years on the TMAPC long enough?
Post by: PonderInc on June 21, 2012, 03:39:26 pm
Just glancing at the members of the TMAPC, and wondering why Gail Carnes has been serving on the planning commission since 1984?  Isn't 28 years a long time to exert influence like that?  Aren't republicans generallly in favor of term limits over lifetime appointments?

I don't have a specific gripe against Mr Carnes (well, aside from the typical TMAPC lack of imagination and an overly narrow developer-centric perspective).  Just wondering.  Really?  There's nobody else in town to fill the role and bring in some fresh perspectives?

If I were a YP, I'd be sort of worried about someone who had been making these decisions about Tulsa's future longer than I had been alive!

Anybody remember 1984?

I agree. I don't know the fine details about how TMAPC appointments are made or the reconfirmation process (if there even is one), but a lifetime appointment to a post that is intended to drive the city forward seems counter-intuitive to say the least. Do they have set terms? If so, are the terms staggered? Or do they have their post as long as they want it?

And perhaps you don't have any particular gripes about any one member right now, but those people's voting records on zoning/land use issues (for the past 30 years, apparently) aren't exactly easy to access.

1984?  Seems like yesterday.  When I read Orwell's "1984", it was still years in the future.  Are you guys old enough to post?

Wow.  I'm one time married, one time divorced.  I've been liberated now for 19 years.  I had one other try and rope me back into that mess in 1997.  I almost fell for it.  Glad I didn't.

Marriage is the leading cause of divorce.

Maybe a time out from wives is in order....

Nope, being single leads to expensive (aviation) hobbies when there is no one to spend your money before you do.

Yes , but with an airplane, or in my case a car, it's not going to run back to an old boyfriend.

As long as you own the airplane or car outright you are correct.   Look out if you are making payments.

Do it in something beside $1 bills.  A quick check indicates that it takes about 2200 lbs of  $1 bills to make a $1 Million.  You're going to want more than that.

I had a car payment once.  Didn't like it at all.  So, now I don't do that...  (no payment is the up side).

The downside is that I drive an old pickup truck.

The balance definitely leans to the "no payment" side.  Am now looking for another old pickup truck just like it to buy and not make payments on....

I remember it well, kinda.   I was a robust 32 years old in 1984.   That was during my Outlaw Country Music phase.   That is why I kinda remember it.

A team of recruiters from 10 of Tulsa's top companies and hospitals will be in Buffalo March 12-14 to interview people interested in making a move to Tulsa, a city of about 400,000.

... I remember driving home from OKC for Memorial Day weekend in 1984.... horrible flood hit the entire city, not just Mingo Creek -- cars piled on top of each other off I-44--- finally forced the city (under Mayor Terry Young) to take action...

By 1984, Tulsa led the nation in disaster declarations, and not because of tornadoes -- because of flooding, the deadliest form of natural disaster.
Now, Tulsa is a model to the nation, and indeed the world, on how to handle flood plain management, a fact that many Tulsans who don't remember how things used to be taken for granted.
