Title: Who has the best pies?
Post by: Ed W on June 25, 2011, 04:48:52 pm
She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed really likes her pies.  She prefers sugar free or no sugar added, but if she's careful about her diet she can have regular ones.

She liked the ones at Marie Callendar's, but they're gone now.

So...who has the best pies...and no, your mom doesn't count!

They only make a few, but Merritt's makes a blueberry pie that inspires song.

I believe you will find like quality at Village Inn.  I suspect they might even use the same bakery for the pies as the offerings were similar.

Why doesn't SWMBO make her own? There is a reason the saying goes "as easy as..." With a food processor making a crust takes less than a minute and it's only four ingredients: flour, fat (lard, shortening or butter), salt, tablespoons of ice water.

Filling is fresh fruit, sugar or substitute (honey works for some fruit types) and maybe corn starch (thickening agent), lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg depending on the fruit.

Peaches are coming into season and what is better than peach pie or cobbler? Nothing that's what.

To me, that's tantamount to getting frozen Whitecastles at Wal-Mart.

They are <>

IMO the Dutch Apple Pie is just as good as the ones sold in the restaurant.

Nelson's has excellent pies.

Impressions has great pies - at least if they relocate.  Also, Brownies always had great pie before the ownership change - I haven't been since then, so I don't know if that still holds true.

Cheesecake Factory.

Brownie's Hamburgers (lemon and coconut cream pies are both excellent - only ones I have eaten.  Never seem to get any further down the list.)

Check to see if it's still the case, but there was a time that the Coleman's pie cook was making pies at Lambrusco'z.

Black Jaxx in Oologah used to have an incredible pie chef.  Can't find her anymore, though.  Another sad thing about Black Jaxx going away!  Great pies!!

What about "T" Towne's own Bama Pies?  The post above that mentioned Merritt's Blueberry Pie sounds good but I'd bet those pies are not cheap. The small cakes at Merritts cost as pretty penny-  I'd hate to guess the cost of a BlueBerry pie at Merritt's.  :o

If you want a Bama pie, you have to go through the drive through at McDonalds.

That's not bad, but we lost the Merrit's in Owasso.  Mary was fond of the Marie Callendar pies when they were on sale because they were &7.50.

We were eating at Freeman's Barbecue when the kids were very small.  They served - and still serve - cobbler after the meal. Lyndsay turned to our waitress and said, "This is as good as Grandma's!"

The waitress grinned and said, "I'll tell the woman who made it.  She'll be tickled!"

Pie...it's what's for dinner.

We regularly get pies from there to give as gifts.

Clanton's in Vinita, OK

At the :40 mark the blonde you see drinking coffee is my sister.   About the 4:25 mark they show home made apple pie.   My in laws lived in Miami, OK.   When my father in law would come to Tulsa for a visit he would always take old Route 66 and always stop for pie and coffee at Clanton's.   My boys when they would go home with him looked forward to stopping at Clanton's for pie and ice cream on their way back to Miami.

This is another thing the world lost when Black Jaxx went out of business.  He had a lady making pies for him - wonderful!  Home made.

Lemon and banana and chocolate and cherry were exceptional.  (Didn't get to try apple)

Not sure why people buy pies..."easy as pie" is not simply a colloquialism, its a fact.

Total time to prep a pie is about 20 minutes (includes the crust). Total bake time is less than an hour. You know what went in it.
