Title: Zorba's Greek Grill
Post by: TheTed on September 12, 2009, 05:52:32 pm
Anybody got info on this place at 6th/Boston? There's a sign up, but looks like they have lots of interior work left to do.

Hope it's something that adds to downtown and not just another 11-2 M-F joint.

Not sure but they painted the trim around the windows bright red, then repainted it white. There isn't enough room in that spot to have much more than counter service.

You're right about the space. The permit on the window says it's 800-something square feet. It looks like they have the counter done and maybe they could squeeze one or two tables in there if they really wanted to.

I'm hoping against hope for something open past 2pm. The impossible dream is that it's a gyros joint open until 3am weekends, but that part of downtown's not quite ready for that yet.

Keep us updated on the progress... my normal route doesn't take me by this place.

Looks like another lunch-only Monday-Friday restaurant.
http://tulsa.craigslist.org/fbh/1417300053.html

I don't get why all these new lunch only restaurants are opening. The whole downtown revitalization hasn't affected the number of people who are downtown during lunchtime on weekdays, has it? Seems like an already saturated market.

That's too bad.

Somehow this Zorba's reminds me of the old hamburger skit on SNL with Belushi and Aykroyd.  "Hamburger.  Hambuger.  Chip.  Chip.  Cheeburger.  Cheeburger"

I tried to google a photo of the skit, but about all I'm coming up with are cast composites and Blues Brothers.  Classic skit.

There is a Zorba's in OKC, I wonder if they are owned by the same people?

"Zorba's" or "Zorba The Greek" seems to be a pretty common Greek diner stereotype name.

To update, they repainted it red again.

It's not big enough to host a dinner crowd.

Keep in mind that yes, lunch only places have opened, but I can think of the following lunch only's that have closed:

Oklahoma Spud 2
Roberto's Deli
Quizno's
Goldie's
Fast Eddie's Pizza
Whatever that burger joint at 5th & main was
Ike's Chili
Billy's Pi
Margaret's
High Noon
Nelson's
Subway (civic center)

I did not realize Quizno's had closed. Whether they're, in business or out of business, it's hard to tell much of a difference when you only pass by at night and on weekends.

Zorba's is big enough to be a take-out, drunk food type of place. Every college town seems to have several of those tiny restaurants that are open until 4am or whatever for takeout/delivery. The park across the street could serve as a sort of patio area for them.

Ike's closed when First Presbyterian bought the building on the west side of the street, along with Boston Deli.  I know Boston Deli was doing very well and assume Ike's wasn't doing badly either.  Did Ike's ever re-open another location in Downtown after that?  If that's what you are thinking of then I was unaware.

I only knew of Ike's being in the Billy's Pi location, next to the also-closed BBQ place. There is a Boston Deli in First Place tower.

I can't place the Billy's Pi location.  Keep in mind, it's been 17 years since I worked Downtown last and kept track of what all there was for lunch down there in the CBD (other than Joe Momma's, of course).

Ike's was on the SW corner of 6th and Boston wasn't it?

Right next to Boston Deli between 6th & 7th on the west side of Boston, as I recall.

The former Ike's Chili (formerly Billies Pi) = NE Corner of 5th and Main
The place is still Ikey.

Edit... there was some deli (forgot the name...) on Boston between 7th & 8th (http://maps.google.com/maps?geocode=Cco9Idsj31UVFZagJwIdqU5H-g&q=First+Presbyterian&f=l&hl=en&sll=36.148956,-95.987527&sspn=0.00603,0.008733&ie=UTF8&radius=0.24&rq=1&ev=zo&hq=First+Presbyterian&hnear=&ll=36.149441,-95.987613&spn=0.002712,0.008733&z=17&layer=c&cbll=36.149441,-95.987612&panoid=oKCoSd5hxU1wQqzQ-j-iOA&cbp=11,267.33,,0,13.63).  In some churches "Community Life" building or somesuch.  Definitely not Ike's or near Ikes..
Or there was Nelson's..  between 5th & 6th on Boston...

The place is stilly Ikey.

That would be the Southeast corner, not northeast corner.  And, while the signage is still in the windows, Ike's has been closed for several years.  (I think it was open less than 1 year at this location)

You mean north doesn't follow the direction you're looking?

Is the recumbent bike shop still in business (Recumbents of Okla)?  Nice guy owned the place downtown (now Zorbas), hope he's still around somewhere.

His hours kept getting shorter and shorter. My bet is that he moved it to his house or somewhere he could just work part time.

It always seemed odd to me that a recumbent store was downtown. The market for people who want recumbents and recumbent parts is so miniscule that you could locate anywhere and they would come to you. It's not like people walking by in downtown are gonna buy a recumbent because of the location. You could put that place in the cheapest piece of real estate in town.

Recumbents of Oklahoma moved to Sand Springs.

204 N McKinley, Sand Springs

918-514-4630

Always call first, Roo (the older gentleman who runs it) keeps odd hours. Still has the best prices in town (including assembly charges some have it cheaper if you get it not assembled but charge much more to assemble it.) for Recumbent Bicycles, and about the only place that has them in stock. Always makes sure the bicycle fits the person and there needs.
