Title: The Hunt Club
Post by: joiei on July 07, 2009, 09:20:13 am
A new place in the Brady,  The Hunt Club at the corner of Main and Cameron is an excellent choice for lunch downtown.  According to their menu they plan on being open late, like until 1:30am.   I had the New Yorker sandwich yesterday with the spinach pies and was very happy.  Big thick sandwich with pastrami, corned beef and coleslaw on marbled rye.  The spinach pies were like mini tiropitas and very tasty.   A nice alternative for lunch or for pre-show if your headed to Cains for a show.

Nice courtyard too.  We had drinks there Sat. night before moving along for the fireworks display disappointment.

Thanks

Was great.  Lots o'fun.

The patio is a great place to cocktail with friends.

The heavy metal bar next door is a negative though.

The Marquee isn't always heavy metal. I think they were hosting a CD release party yesterday.

Thank you for that info.  I was just using the name they use on the menu.  And I think the correct name for them is Tiropitas.

Went there recently. My take: Meh.

It was (barely) after 10 pm, so I only had my pick from their four-item late-night menu. That's not gonna cut it.

The Chicago dog was pretty mediocre. At least they used the correct ingredients, minus sport peppers, which is more than I can say for some Chicago dogs I've had in Tulsa. But it tasted microwaved and not at all fresh. Also, $7.50 for a hot dog is a rip off.

I like that they have a patio, though I wouldn't call it a nice patio. Downtown really needs a nice beer garden, the kind with an outdoor bar and a fountain or something. What few patios we have are pretty unspectacular.

I don't see myself returning to the Hunt Club much, barring major improvements.

Dude, they opened July 1, give 'em a chance to get sorted out before you write them off for good.

I'll probably return in a few months to see if they've made any significant improvements. But as of now I don't really have a reason to go there. There's nothing to lift them above the sea of bars and restaurants downtown.

We went back yesterday for bloody mary's and hung out for a while.

Across main street from there...what is that building?  Any plans for it that anyone knows of?

A friend told me it was an old car dealership, no idea what the future plans are for the building.  Drop in on the Crystal Pistol and Sound Pony next time you are up in that area, both are fun places.  Sound Pony usually has a special on Marshall's and the Pistol has $2.00 Guiness draws.

Don't know on the 2-story building. The one story one further south is a recording studio owned by a certain mmmBand.

Hunt Club Hours:
Open until 2:00 AM every night!

M-F:  11:00 AM - 2:00 AM
Sat & Sun 3:00 PM - 2:00 AM

I popped in to see what they had, and to grab a menu.  (I'll be back.  The food looked great, and I love the space.)

They have a nice mix of gourmet sandwiches and interesting sides / appetizers / desserts.  Conan will be happy to know that they serve Marshall's beer.   ;)

Appetizers include things like the Mediterranean Platter (hummus, olives, tabouli, tsatziki sauce and pita), tequila lime chicken wings (ok, I'm intrigued!), frito pie, chili cheese fries, and queso and chips, etc.

Salads include: Greek salad, grilled chicken salad, caesar salad, orzo or tabouli salad, tomato salad, garden salad, etc.

Lots of sandwiches including: Reuben, gyro, the Pigout (roasted pork on a ciabatta bun),  BBQ Brisket, roasted turkey, and...the Elvis (peanut butter and strawberry jelly with sliced bananas and bacon on a ciabatta bun) (this explains some things about Elvis in his later years)...

Also have a couple different hot dogs and a sourdough soup bowl.

Desserts include: cheese cake, turtle pie, carrot cake, key lime pie and frozen banana with chocolate and peanuts.

Late night menu includes:
Pizza, frito pie, macaroni, Chicago dawg, Okie dawg (with chili or sauerkraut), 3 cheese macaroni, and the aforementioned chicken wings.

The patio space is nice, very similar to the Tiny Lounge (formerly 818).

They just opened a couple weeks ago (soft opening).  Things are looking good.  They said they'll be adding items to the late night menu in the future.  Just getting their feet wet right now, and marketing by word of mouth.

Stop by and check it out.

Native Son, acoustic duo of Mitch Boulanger and Randy Brumley, played the Hunt Club last night and had such a great response they were asked to play again tonight and Saturday night.

I found the service and food to be good. A friend ordered a Greek salad and it looked WONDERFUL.

The owner is really a super-nice guy and I would encourage everyone to at least give them a try. We need to support local establishments and especially local places that support local musicians.

I had a very adequate but unremarkable Gyro there a few days ago.  No cucumber, sadly.  Not a terrific sandwich, but worth checking the place out again after a few months.

I was there for lunch on Friday.  Enjoyed a very tasty (and very juicy!) reuben sandwich and tabouli.

Chatted with the owners, who recognized me from the previous week when I stopped in to grab a menu.  They seem very cool and excited about the restaurant. (Both are corporate refugees...happily pursuing their dream of running a restaurant instead of sitting in a cubicle.)  They're still working out the kinks during the "soft opening" phase, and seemed eager for constructive feedback.

The Hunt Club has a nice little patio space (the adjacent building was torn down years ago) very similar to the Tiny Lounge.  There was even some shade and a breeze at 1:00 pm.  They are planning to build a small outdoor stage in the near future.

I'm excited that they'll be open late (with a late night menu) so Cain's and Brady concert-goers will have a place to grab a sandwich and a Marshalls beer.

Nice ambiance...and even a few dead animals on the walls to give it that "Hunt Club" feeling.

I'll definitely be back.  I love family-run places like this, and I'm excited that they're downtown.

Okay that's a total fabrication.  I just don't want you to doosh up one of my favorite new places

Ate lunch there today.  All four of us enjoyed our meals and we had prompt service without feeling rushed.  Overall, it offers an interesting selection of items and has a relaxing feel.  I know it was an unusual day for July, but the patio also looked inviting.  I was disappointed they were out of several items and, because I had meetings this afternoon, I could not order a Marshalls.  I can't blame them for that last part.  I will definitely go back.

Went to the Hunt Club last week for lunch and found it to have some nice additions since the White Rabbit's unfortunate departure.  Additional window and door to the patio area really open up the space.  I wanted to try the spinach pies but they weren't listed as an app, I ordered them as such anyway and they were wonderfully tasty.

I'm slowly working my way down the menu there.  Against better judgement for my health, I ordered the Frito chili pie last night.  Absolutely the best I've had in Tulsa.  They must be using brisket for the meat, not ground beef.  Big spread of queso over the top.  Total heart attack in a bowl, but what a way to go!  My friend had the chicken salad sandwich, quite good, not outstanding.  Many of the service issues seem to have gotten ironed out.

FYI, Native Son is playing again this weekend, I believe.

Did I hear "best frito chili pie in Tulsa?" and "Heart attack in a bowl?"

Must.. consume.

I guess all the fried food at Caz's wasn't meeting the market need so Bros Hooligan saw a niche to fill.

Kitchen is rather limited, I wonder if it will be an abbreviated menu.

That's pretty much what the Tulsa World article says.
http://www.tulsaworld.com/article.aspx/Bros_Houligan_to_take_over_the_Hunt_Club_in_Brady_Arts/20130424_39_D1_CUTLIN900222?subj=4
Quote
Bros. Houligan, a 25-year-old restaurant with two Tulsa locations, is taking over the Hunt Club space at 224 N. Main St. in the Brady Arts District.

"With another partner we own the Vanguard next door, and my son plays in a rock 'n' roll band that plays the Hunt Club, so we have gotten to know Mary Ellen (Hunt Club owner Mary Ellen Slape)," said Pat McMurchy, who owns Bros. Houligan with brother Tim McMurchy.

"She has been talking about moving back to Arkansas for some time, so here's what we are going to do. She will stay on as a minority owner, and we will change the name to Bros. Houligan's Hunt Club. No one will lose their job in this deal."

McMurchy said the paperwork for the transaction was completed Tuesday.

McMurchy said the building has no kitchen equipment except a refrigerator and a microwave, so cooking fixtures will have to be installed.

"When we were walking through the space, Tim said, 'Does this bring back any memories?'" Pat McMurchy said. "It was a lot like it was when we started Bros. Houligan 25 years ago on 15th Street."

McMurchy said because of space limitations, the menu at the new location will be more limited than at the other restaurants. He said he hopes to be serving Bros. Houligan-style food by mid-June.

The restaurant is known for its chicken-fried steak, fried chicken livers, steaks, cottage fries and country gravy.

"We will continue with the Hunt Club as it is until we get the kitchen done," McMurchy said. "I don't anticipate being closed any time during construction."

A patio is located between the Vanguard music hall and Bros. Houligan's Hunt Club. McMurchy said a side door will be installed in the Vanguard so that customers can walk across the patio to dine.
