Title: april jo's hamburgers
Post by: forrest on March 30, 2009, 01:08:24 pm
Just found April Jo's over at 3409 E Admiral Pl. Old Wings walk in. They opened up I believe back in Sept. Good honest old fashioned hamburger joint. No seating just old school walk up place. Wife and I got two cheeseburgers, large order of fries and large order of fried okla and two fried pies for just under $14..good chow for those who are tired of lousy corporate burgers for more money. Open Mon-Fri 10:30-3:00. Nothing fancy in the least. Some of us in the hood around Tu,Kendall Whittier,Darlington Park and White City should remember to make the trek over there. avert eyes (i am kidding) from Sonic and go over there for lunch if possible

There are too many great burger joints in Tulsa to ever justify getting one from the chains.

Sorry to threadjack, but I was just talking to a co-worker about J.J.'s at 7th & Peoria. I went there once, had to be 12 or 13 years ago and I remember it was one amazing burger. What's the scoop on that place? I read that he makes 50 burgers a day and that's it. What's the deal with having to be a member or be accompanied by a member? Anyone been there lately?

Which one is open at 2 in the morning?

if you are getting a burger at 2 in the morning, quality is not on the top of the list.
you are drunk, leaving a bar and need stomach filler.

If this place is anything like the old Wings, then Im sure it is good, I will have to try it.

other than that, Webers on Brookside, Hanks on Admiral, and Bills on Utica, and Claudes on brookside, those are my favorites

Bill was a good guy to me when I was a paperboy and my stop was next to his burger shop.  He built it in an old gas station. The current one is phase two. Hank was his brother. Extra karma for knowing their last names. :D

To quote Guy Fieri, I've got four words for you: Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

I had the fried chicken platter with okra and it was a bit too much food for me but otherwise very good. I haven't had fried chicken prepared like that in a long time and I rarely get fried okra for some reason. It also comes with a piece of toast and the option of fries instead of okra.

It almost (don't flame me for this) was like the old Rex's fried chicken in some ways. Not as spicy but she does have a jalapeno version which I'll try next time.

I didn't ask if it was fresh made or anything but I think she was doing the chicken to order at least. I could see her flouring something. I would imagine the okra is from some food service outfit.

I have had a more consistent experience with her than I did with the old Wings..
