They're gonna need a lot more than just one store to compete with Walgreen's.

BTW, I despise Walgreen's.

If this is the first CVS, it won't be the last. And they are better than Walgreens.

Are we on the verge of a drugstore war?

That is the third CVS coming down the pipe.

1. 71st & Yale (they are doing site prep now)
2. 31st & Harvard
3. 61st & Lynn Lane

Oh, and I meant 41st & Harvard, not 31st.

So we have:

1. 71st & Yale (they are doing site prep now)
2. 41st & Harvard
3. 121st and Elm (Jenks)
4. 61st & Lynn Lane (Broken Arrow)
5. I hear a drug store is looking at southwest corner of 121st and Elm in Broken Arrow near a Walmart Supercenter. Probably CVS since Walgreens is a mile away at 111th and Walmart is close.

I have never lived in an area where CVS was located.  What makes them superior to Walgreens or to Med-ex or any other pharmacy in town?

Yes, they are planning a whole shoppig center with CVS as the anchor. Unlike some of the locations that are further along, this is a ground lease and dependent on the whole development taking off.

I would say "Walgreens" does have similarities with another "Wal" store. For example you won't see advertised "3 T-shirts for $5" at CVS. I would say the food sections are comparable but I haven't seen all the generic brands of food walgreens has at CVS and they don't have giant toy/pet food and seasonal sections. They seem more like a drugstore and then a small grocery (and beer) sections so it can do as a grocery store in a pinch.

I also have seen a lot more urban/downtown CVS's than other chains (fingers crossed)

An article in the TW from last year noted that CVS is moving into the Tulsa market, with their first store to indeed be the 71st/Yale location, at the site of the old Bennigan's.  The report goes on to state the store will be completed this fall and be apx 12000 sqft.

If the big draw into your stores is 3 t-shirts for $5, and you put it on your marquee, I expect high school students to be working there.

who cares on that point though?

the one thing that CVS can improve on Walgreen's is not to hire a bunch of ****ing (and I do mean that literally) high schoolers like the Walgreens at 111th/Mem.

That is the store we use. Never had a problem there.

Amazing how that rain cloud follows you everywhere. Your carpets must be soaked.

CVS does know how to do urban stores. There's one in Coolidge Corner in Brookline, Mass., (http://"http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Beacon+%26+Harvard,+Brookline,+MA&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=43.443045,60.644531&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr&layer=c&cbll=42.34224,-71.12134&panoid=S8IvoNe9d6nXtrBuZzCeBQ&cbp=12,25.84641486619779,,0,4.56317283652108") that's been around since I was in college. But the stand-alone stores I've come across in recent travels look very much like Walgreens.

I have information from well connected reliable sources in Owasso that they have options on a couple of different locations in Owasso.

Does this mean that the mentioned criticism is now considered null and void?  I have no problem with Walgreens.  I go to Scott Robinson for my prescriptions.  And for all that other stuff,  I pick it up at Target.  Speaking of Target, that new one being built in Broken Arrow looks like a regular target, not a super target.  It looks like the one at Tulsa Hills and there is no super target anywhere on the storefront.

You are correct about the Target in Broken Arrow.  It is a regular Target.  Actually, Target is considering giving up on the grocery side of things.  There is no way to compete with Walmart so they are building fewer SuperTargets.  That Target opens in one month.  I would expect traffic at the 71st and 169 Target to dwindle some.

Yes, that is correct.  I heard earlier in the week.  Good location for them.  Walgreens at 111th, Walmart at 111th.  Target across the street.  Certainly among the competition.

CVS should be opening their first 2 Broken Arrow locations soon...anyone have opening dates (61st and Lynn Lane as well as 121st and Elm).  They have a 3rd Broken Arrow location planned for 91st and 145th E. Ave (currently an abandoned gas station).  CVS is also going to build in Owasso on the southeast corner of 96th Street North and 129th East Ave.

And from some of the TMAPC entries I see on their new Google Maps interface, they intend on building one at Admiral and Sheridan where the old shopping center was razed.

I was told all of the locations currently being worked on open next month, including the one in Bixby and one on Harvard.

The Dunkin' Donuts of drugstores.
I think their midwestern business strategy is to be across the street from every Walgreens.

Their construction crew said that it was a requirement on them. You are not supposed to have signs up for a business that isn't open.

Hmm..makes me wonder why you can see the QuikTrip sign at the new one (not yet complete) at 51st/129th East Ave...oh wait a minute, I guess QT is the exception.

Is that why all the abandoned businesses in Tulsa have signs that are spray-painted or covered with tattered sheets?  Great idea....

I noticed that several locations have gone from "24 hours" to "front of store 24 hours"

Kinda sad to see, but Walgreens does the same thing. Not much need to pay a pharmacist to do nothing at 3am.
