Title: With a friend like Coburn, who needs enemies?
Post by: Hometown on March 27, 2008, 12:44:50 PM
It's Official.  On March 18, 2008, the TulsaWorld ran a story about Tom Coburn titled "Coburn calls for sacrifice."

Just in case anyone around these parts hasn't already noticed, Coburn does not believe it is his job to secure federal funding for Oklahoma.  Maybe that's why we lead the nation in hunger and FEMA doesn't feel compelled to help us with the worst natural disaster in our history.

Here's what Coburn said:

"When you take the oath of the U.S. Senate, it doesn't say one word about Oklahoma," Coburn said. "Oklahoma sent me to Washington . . . to make good long-term decisions for the country as a whole. It didn't send me to Washington to make sure I got our share of the money.

Coburn claims to be conservative and if so, he has to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

It's painful, but as Senator Coburn talks about fiscal responsibility in government, his words would seem hypocritical if he went asking the Feds for more money than already allocated for disaster relief in Oklahoma.

Here's an idea HT- perhaps if more members of the HOR and Senate would think like Coburn fiscally and really stand up to earmarks, perhaps less of your money would have to make a round-trip through Washington D.C. for the essential goods and services which should be expected of government.

The government doesn't need more money, they need to figure out how to spend less of it.

Such idealism! I thought you were supposed to get more conservative and pragmatic as you aged. So, we'll sit by and watch as more pragmatic states siphon off our tax burden to build their states and then watch as they advertise to our citizens to vacation at the spots our taxes paid for. We can then visit with smug self satisfaction that we had Coburn to watch the interests of the rest of the country....but not Oklahoma. Am I reading that right?

edit: Let me put this another way. When you have an orgy it works better when EVERYBODY is naked. Coburn would be the one with the suit on surveying the crowd and saying, "Someone has to have some morals here!"[:D]

True reform in government has to start somewhere with someONE.  It's too bad he recieves ridicule and disdain from his own constituents for trying to rein in government over-spending.

It only takes one person getting naked to start an orgy, WB.  Or so I've heard. [;)]

What's it called if no one joins that first naked person?

He might as well be doing that for all the good it's doing Oklahoma.  I'm afraid we'll be back to donor state status soon.

Our other senator, Jim Inhoff, is also an embarassment.  But at least he sort of gets the "bringing home the bacon" part of his job.  Not that he is particularly good at it, but at least I've seen him try.

Coburn, on the other hand, is all about political posturing to enhance his career.  The recent noise about Coburn being a potential vice presidential candidate is exactly what he has been working for.  Unfortunately he had done nothing for his constituents.

Disaster relief has become the New Welfare since hurricane Katrina.  The goal Mother Nature had in mind was to flush that cesspool and scatter the rats, not create another money pit for the US Gov.  Now anytime a storm blows over a tree everyone gets in line for handouts.

But don't worry, she'll send son of Katrina and remind us why we shouldn't build below sea level.

As for Oklahoma....

Our pioneer ancestors would hang their heads in shame at how helpless some acted after the ice ctorm.

But the Darwin in me is actually pleased that some of you would rather lie down and die rather than bucking it up....survival of the fittest.

A+ Inteller- that's friggin' awesome.

FWIW, HT- Coburn has no interest in higher office.  Believe it or not, he really is in Washington for altruistic purposes.
