Title: W04 sticker must mean Woe for (America)
Post by: RecycleMichael on October 17, 2006, 09:54:49 PM
I saw a brand new minivan today with a W04  round sticker on the back window. I know this was a 2007 version because my mother has the same model. Then it occurred to me that someone had saved a political bumper sticker for two years, just to put in on their new vehicle.

I can see someone being proud about the guy they were voting for in 2004, but what does it say about the person who so wants to remind people who they voted for two years ago.

Are they just blindly supporting a presidency that most of America has lost confidence in?

Do they just want to wear their politics on their bumper and couldn't find a sticker that said "red state red neck"?

Ahhh... "most of America" .... what charming words.
Sorry to tell you, but the latest Rasmussen poll on Bush's approval rating (Oct. 17) shows that 42% approve. Yes I realize that this is less than half, but is 58% "most of America"???
Lets think -- 42% --- if the US population is 300 million, than that means 42% is 126,000,000 people approve of GWB. I realize that all of your friends are probably bleeding heart liberals, but that doesn't mean everyone is. So whenever you start thinking that Cubs is the only person out there that supports the President, remember that there are 126 million other "red state red neck(s)" out there.

I'd like to see the poll you're talking about, Cubs. When you use phrases like "support the president" you kind of imply (intentionally, no doubt) that 42% of Americans blindly and unquestioningly support Bush like you do. I've yet to see a poll question that said, "Do you support the president". I can believe that 42% of Americans approve of Bush's handling of a particular matter but you have to look at polls overall. Like it or not, you've also gotta consider things like his handling of the Iraq war.

Okay, Cubs, I may have figured out why I can't find anything on this poll. You said October 17 but you didn't say what YEAR. Can ya give us a link or something? I'm not saying that your number doesn't appear somewhere in the poll, I'd just like to see the whole poll before it gets spun by a Bush apologist.

I respond to telephone polls quite often. I guess I fit a profile. Some are push and some are legitimate. The questions rarely are well designed. And I always call them on that. They are either/or questions. For example, "would you describe yourself as: very conservative, somewhat conservative, somewhat liberal, very liberal?" A Cubs designed question if there ever was one. They recently asked me Bush approval questions but they were regarding particular issues, how he's handling Iraq, Terrorism and the economy with limited response choices. The results couldn't be too meaningful.

Cubs, 58% of the American public is a landslide. Factor out the 27% of the public that will consistently lockstep salute the fuehrer (30% in OK) and you're left with merely 21% or 1 in 5 of the country who reasonably choose to support him.

Well, all I can say is I did a Google search for "rasmussen poll october" and it didn't hit anything from 2006.

"The President earns approval from 79% of Republicans, 15% of Democrats and 35% of other affiliations."

No surprise here. Right down party lines.

Not that he'll answer it but here's a question for Cubs. What per cent would be required to make up "most of America"? I mean, if you don't accept the dictionary definition of the word "most" what new definition have you made up for it?

1 : greatest in quantity, extent, or degree <the most ability>
2 : the majority of <most people>

27% of americans believe we never went to the moon, but 49% believe aliens landed here. Another 11% of the population believes aliens are out there, just haven't stopped by yet.

5 out of every 4 people are bad at fractions.

25% of the population are idiots.

85% of polls are made up.

No more so than the numerous dolts who still have Kerry/Edwards stickers on their vehicles next to a sticker that says "You can't hug your children with nuclear arms."

I love people who get jazzed up about bumper stickers sayings.  They are the product of a soundbite culture who shouts slogans instead of engaging in meaningful debate and thinking the two are equal.

Reminds me of the new John Mayer song:

Is there anyone who
Ever remembers changing there mind from
The paint on a sign?
Is there anyone who really recalls
Ever breaking rank at all
For something someone yelled real loud one time

Everyone believes
In how they think it ought to be

You summed that up quite well.

I find most of the complete idiots who still wear their dumb black W stickers or "W - STILL the president" are some of the dumbest, whacked out fruit cakes you will find in ANY state, let alone Oklahoma.  These people, if you even look at them wrong will go off on you.  I truely think these people are buried so deep in zealotry for the president they are on constant attack mode.  It is really ****ing sad.

I also find most of these people drive Hummers or Dodge products and generally have a **** YOU attitude.  Like if given the chance they would shove a shotgun down your throat.  Scary people.

I think it call comes from a "brand worship" culture that has been successfully created by spin doctors and marketers.  It started with these people in high school when they had the Reebok vs Nike brnad wars, then you have Coke vs Pepsi, on up to Sooner vs Poke, etc etc up until you have W vs kerry.  This Brand Machine, has perpetuated the idea that no matter how miniscule the topic is (shoes, cola, etc) you must be so behind the product or you suck.  So we now have a society that gets as worked up over cola as president, and there is no noticible distinction of importance of one over the other.  People get just as dumb and stupid  (and blindly follow) the best chewing gum as they would the best plan for Medicare.  In fact, I think if you did a survey, people would honestly say the right chewing gum was more important.

I think you have a point, although I think you haven't quite covered it all. Look at all major sports (baseball, football, basketball, tennis, tiddlywinks) and they are all us vs them. We love conflict and we love rooting for something. Whether it be the victorious overlord or the underdog. The home team or the fan favorite.

I believe this can be healthy as a form of entertainment and a sense of belonging but if taken too seriously it can be a bad thing. I come from a family of conservative democrats who are steadfastly following the party waiting for it to wipe out gay marriage and abortion.

All things said, you better back up off my truck dog.
