With the departures of Travis Meyer & Mike Ziegenhorn is KTUL revamping the entire news department? KJRH ran a promo this evening and seemingly they are acquiring three additional members of the KTUL staff. I wonder why folks area abandoning ship?
First...I've always disliked KTUL. I've always kind of felt that KTUL was geared towards really old people and country folk. And I've never really liked their "talent."
Perhaps KTUL is revamping...and trying to compete for different types of viewers.
Another posibility....during the Bush vs. Kerry election...Charles Ely said that the people who weren't voting for Bush were "yellow-dog democrats". I took that as a part of the mindset of KTUL.
I'm not saying that politics caused the turnover...but I'd suspect that if KTUL's politics showed so clearly, there are other issues with the KTUL management. And whatever the mindset of their management, it may not be flexible enough to keep their newscasters...the market is competitive after all.
If I worked for KTUL, I would leave too. I imagine it gets quite sickening to always be listening to liberal-biased news.
Now I know the other stations have some liberal-bias as well, but KTUL is definately the worst.

Want restrictions on peoples views? Go live in N. Korea.
The station must have had too many liberal rednecks on the staff.

I've heard there is a lot of politic-ing going on atop lookout mountain. They are feeling some competition heat and making some changes. The new/old sports guy was previously the ziegenhorn's boss and they didn't get along.

Actually, it turns out KJRH isn't getting any "person" from KTUL, they're getting two shows from KTUL, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! That was kind of cheap to play off the whole Zig thing and make people think he's coming htere.
I think they're just tired of finishing second in the ratings locally. They were tied with KOTV for the top spot a few times just a couple of years ago, but they've slipped significantly since then.

Actually, they were crushing CH 6 from about '99 until about two years ago. But, these things go in cycles. I think KOKI has hurt channl 8 a little bit, but I think a lot of it just has to do with channel 6's affiliation with CBS. Their network shows are the best. You've also got Oprah and Dr. Phil doing some damage. Channel 8 used to have Millionaire and some decent primetime programming. That's not the case now.

You have got to be kidding! I have always considered Channel 8 news to be a mouthpiece for the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce. In my opinion, they offer the most conservative, "Republican," viewpoint of any local broadcast station.
My own personal preferrence for local news is Channel 6, especially since Clayton Vaughn retired. I also sometimes watch the 9:00 PM newscast on Fox 23. I don't have cable or satelite and rely on local broadcast, the Tulsa World, and word-of-mouth to keep me informed of local news issues.
Wouldn't it be great if we had a younger news station? A station that would be geared for the young professional. It would be willing to go the extra mile, and do real interviews with real people, and willing to ask questions that other stations would never ask in this town.

I could buy that for a dollar. I dislike deceptive advertising but work for a local contributor to that end. Two shows and whom/what else?

But, that would be REAL reporting. As a person that is moving on in years (yikes), I find it a bit offensive that you wouldn't think we would all appreciate that.

KTUL IS LIBERAL. I watch a lot of news and hear the same stories on all the stations and KTUL always has to put a liberal spin on it. Sometimes it is just a word or two, but they almost always put some type of liberal twist on the story.
I am not the only one who feels this way. Ask Michael DelGiorno, he too would tell you KTUL is the most liberal.
I sent an email to KTUL once telling them I was sick of their liberal spins, and one of the workers there, who admitted he wasn't happy with KTULs approach, replided something along the lines of, "KTUL reports the news as we see it and when I say we, I mean the writers." Now I don't know, maybe he was just having a bad day, but I doubt it.
I know you don't always see it, but KTUL is liberal. Sometimes I zone out and don't really catch it either, but if you listen closely, you will hear the liberal spins.
Of the four local stations I always thought of KTUL as the most conservative. I still like them just fine. Perhaps you could give an example of one of their more liberal spins on the news.
I feel about conservatives the same way you do about liberals but it is easier to spot conservative spin. Since conservatives dominate the airwaves it is rare to hear anyone do the liberal slant. Espescially locally!
But when you need some contrast with reality just go to one of the national Fox news programs. They don't mind calling names and using negatives to describe anyone who strays from the fold.
The perfect example is Karl Rove reporting. I suppose DelGiorno is ecstatic with Rove's traitorous behaviour. Uh oh...awk,awk, he's liberal, liberal..awk,awk!
Yes, I am.

Ya...Michael DelGiorno...I'll make sure and ask him next time I see him...he's not biased or anything. [xx(]
Cubs, citing Michael DelGiorno as a source for bias in the news is like asking Chef Boyardee for gourmet cooking tips.
And what is this bias you're talking about with KTUL? Specifics, please.
Personally, I think you're just citing your own biases, and anything left of the John Birch Society you consider as "liberal."
I enjoy 8 and 6 but as far as a weatherman goes, all either station needs to do is just put a small radar image in the lower left hand of the screen when a storm comes to town. If someone wants to know how hot it is outside, they just need to take their lazy butt outside in the yard. This also works in the same method when checking to see if it's raining outside.
Sports should be renamed to Entertainment, for that's all it is anymore. If these stations want to up their ratings, they need to start covering women beach volleyball and stuff like that, and forget about all them alumni's needing something to watch while pounding beers down during a Happy Hour somewhere.

Want to know the big problem with Tulsa Cubs? It has way, way too many people like you. Has rock hard conservatism ever gotten the city anywhere? Not that I can see.
Take a peek at house prices in so called liberal cities like NYC, Miami, San Francisco, Seattle and elsewhere and then look at Tulsa. Recently MSNBC published a list and ID'd Tulsa as one of the 10 worst housing markets in the USA. Sounds like most people want to be in the liberal cities. Want to know why Cubs? Freedom.
You need to get out more. As long as Tulsa espouses the KKK/John Birch line it will continue to suck hind-t**
Part of the problem is the hi-jacking by the religious right of the term liberalism. To them, the word is synonymous with immoral gays & lesbians who was to corrupt their children and teach them creationism.
Here is the definition of liberal from the American Heritage dictionary:
quote:
liberal: ADJECTIVE: 1a. Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry. b. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.
So, Cubs, are you saying that KTUL reports the news in a way that is tolerant, progressive, and broad-minded? Are they not bigoted? Hmmm, maybe I should watch them sometimes(though I still think they have the worst reporters).

WHAT!!! San Frann is liberal [:O]
Keep up the good examples there TT....
Cubs ,I'd just let them win .... no use
If KTUL really wanted to improve its market share, perhaps they should start by dumping Carole "Guess what color my hair's going to be this year" Lambert and Charles "I come across as smug and arrogant and I don't care" Ely. I can't stand watching them.
And who would have thought that Eddie Munster (aka Frank Mitchell) would grow up to be a Meteorologist in Tulsa, OK?
The people at FOX come across as more professional, in my opinion, although I think Channel 2 provides the best overall news coverage in the area.

I think that is the key. Two 'has-been' anchors whose 'understudys' are much better than them. For some reason, they still have enough clout at the station. Carole's 23 year tenure is very long by any new-reading standard.
And Charles' monotone delivery is terribly annoying.
Which begs another question:
Many times, in cities Tulsa's size (and even larger), a local news job is seen as a step to a larger market for many anchors. Its kind of like the minor league baseball system. And with the minor league baseball system, you get to see some of the rising talent for awhile before they move onto the Majors.
However, with Tulsa's anchors (and reporters too) it seems like most end up being 'lifers'. And I think the quality shows (i.e. lack thereof).
Why don't we get better talent coming through?
[And as far as bias, I don't think KTUL is liberal or conservative. I think that the powerful people at the station have been around town so long, and made friends and acquaintances of other local notables, that locally unbiased reporting is sometimes difficult. Their regional and national news is basically generic.]
Channel 8 won an
Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor during Vision 2025.
Besides serial puff-piece positive info-mercials masquerading as "news", promoting the VOTE YES side of Vision 2025, they had the effrontery to
SPIKE their re-broadcast of Ch. 47's Vision 2025 Debate just a day before the election, and instead aired a re-run of "Cheers". How
informative!"Technical difficulties", they harrumphed. Sure.
Seems their station manager was a higher-up wannabe with the Metro Tulsa ChamberPots, and was just doing the "Good 'Ol Boy" network a favor.
My payback is real simple: Hit them in their pocketbook.
I've been boycotting them non-stop ever since that decision.
NEVER turn them on. Now,
THAT hurts them.
They could be re-cycling Walter Klondike or Dan Blather from retirement from the
Liberal Biased-Media Rest Home, and I wouldn't know or care 'cause I don't tune them in. EVER.

Except for the NFL, a little baseball and some college football that I can catch with my old-fashioned rabbit ears, I don't watch television at all. I canceled my cable way back in 2000 and don't miss it.

If you'd have e-mailed me, I'd have explained those technical difficulties. TV-47 was supposed to give us a clean copy of the debate, meaning no logos, no graphics, etc. We didn't get that. We got one with logos on it. Could we have aired it? Yeah, probably. But, we didn't and we had to take the heat for it. But, to say it was because one side did better than the other or that we had a bias toward one side or the other would be incorrect.
Hey....an insider!! Welcome.
Anything new going on with KTUL's talent line-up? Was the Travis Meyers hop...just a average ordinary talent move?

That was his decision. They offered him a load of cash. I guess that was more important. I don't guess I could blame him.
Thanks KTUL,
I was kind of hoping you were going to say..."I fired him, and Charles Ely is next." But...can't win them all. [:D]

Heck, I can't fire anyone. I'm on the LOW end of the totem pole. But, I'd hate to fire Chuck. He's an all around good guy.
Yeah...they all seem like good people. Charles and Carol have been there forever...and IMO...the newscast looks a little dated sometimes. But if its working...no reason to change.

Well, Ch. 8 certainly shouldn't tolerate those pesky little logo's, should they? What a convenient excuse!

What is funny is that we received just as many if not more e-mails from people FOR Vision 2025 that were upset we didn't air it. They argued we didn't air it because we were against it. You should see some of the e-mails I get telling us we're the most conservative station on earth and that they'll no longer watch. They ususally double those from conservatives who say we're too liberal.
PS - as I said, you're either going to take that as an 'excuse' or the 'reason'. Take it as you want.

In good company.
And Channel 8 does have the best website of the local TV stations IMO.
Well...maybe its a tie...KTUL and KOTV.
Fox is always a day behind...or they don't cover the story at all. KJRH......yikes. Virtually no local content there.
I like KOTV's website--especially the e-clips. KTUL is a lot more limited with that--maybe they could increase it? For those of us who don't watch tv too frequently, it is nice to catch it on the computer.
Yeah...KOTV's site is pretty cool.
I don't watch TV news much either. I find that by website...I can get basically everything I want...and I can ignore the murders, and weird happenings that I'd prefer not to know about.
I'd like to see one of the TV websites...go "local" crazy...and get into detail about all the projects going on.
I just think it's sad , it won't be a local station that does the investigated story into the corruptness of the sound program for the airport.
But then again a story on a news station is forgotten news the next day.

Yes, it is so funny as to be UNBELIEVABLE that the Pro-Vision 2025 Tax Vampires wanted the Channel 47 Debate re-aired.
I don't believe it for one minute.
The Anti-Tax debaters mopped the floor with Bill LaFortune and his former TV mouthpiece personality Karen Keith during the Ch. 47 debate. And, they did not want that spectacle re-aired to an even larger audience on Channel 8.
The Vision 2025 Vampires raised and spent $100,000's on TV advertising, including 30 minute long paid "Infomercials". They had NO appetite for airing
TWO sides of the tax increase debate.
NONE.Sorry, it's
NOT credible that they really wanted the Ch. 47 debate aired. They also didn't want ANY public debate, and it was only with great effort that the Vote No organization was able to coerce a debate after the League of Women Voters shamed the Mayor and Dirty Bob Dick to come out from hiding, and debate.

I would agree with that. KTUL and KOTV are the only websites that update during the day. and a good job you do Kev. Although KOTV has updated the weather part of their website, I still check KTUL first. I like that we can put into motion the dopler thingy. It helps me to know in which direction the storm is heading.
Mornings I mostly watch KOTV because I think they are much more laid back and joke around more often. Thats exactly what I need in my mornings. But I typically watch KTUL after work. But I still like Good Day Tulsa if I am off work or playing sick.
isn't "local news talent" an oxymoron?

Perhaps you can answer this quasi-related question:
Why when covering a "live" event is the "live logo" recorded?? This annoys the begezus out of me. Would it be so hard to add the live indicator after the VCR so to speak?
When the footage is reaired - "live" is up in the corner and usually nothing to indicate it's a lie. This is always bad during "breaking news" when affiliates/networks start passing video around and regurgitating video because the don't really have any news... or on simple things like KTULs Channel 53 rebroadcasts...
I'm suprised the FCC doesn't have regulations or something about this

Actually no. Those graphics are not done in post production, they are done live during the broadcast and in the control room. The 'clean feed' of the broadcast would include all graphics except the '8' logo in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Also FYI, Channel 53 is KOTV, not KTUL.

I've actually started doing some more of these. I try to put every package we do on the internet. Unfortunately, we can't stream the entire 30 minute programs or I'd do that.
Any chance to put up a video of Frank on July the 7th during his backyard thing. This was down the street from my house and I had the biggest laugh when he was talking and a jet came over and he had to stop , while on air.... It was priceless

That is your opinion, and I respectfully disagree. One thing I do not do is rely on only one source for my knowledge of current events. I watch local TV news, and the network TV national news, I read newspapers, I read news reports on the internet. As an adult with a mind of my own, I think I can separate the facts from the opinions, or at least make an intelligent effort to do so.
One thing I never do is listen to talk radio. A total waste of the public airwaves, in my opinion.

KOTV
was streaming entire newscasts live over the internet in 2000. I had people in Italy, Australia, Germany and both US coasts Email me after an interview I did for a 2-part sweeps piece on streetlight reform in Tulsa (OK, they did get a heads-up from an international advocacy group, which pumped the viewership up a bit).
At the time, you could browse to broadcast.com/television/kotv/ and watch Tulsa news live from wherever you had the internet, or catch up later with a smaller, archived version (the link doesnt work now, or at least since broadcast.com was assimilated by Yahoo).
The piece has since won a few broadcasting awards, and now resides at

We used to do it, too, but a new rule was enacted or passed or something that disallows commercials to be streamed online. I'm guessing I could take the direct feed from our control room, but there would be about 2-3 minutes of dead space where the commercials would be.

We tried that for a short time as well, but it was very difficult for me to get a person to do it since they were already busy or out in the field.

They probably have a better advantage of being able to get more people into multi-tasking, considering their setup.

Well, the way things are set up here, our evening anchors don't get here until 2 and at that time, we have our afternoon news meeting. So, it wouldn't be until 3 or 3:30 before they could even get around to it. And, our other anchors are usually out in the field as are our reporters. It gets pretty dead in the newsroom between 10AM and 3PM.

I know Dish and DirecTv arent allowed to provide, say, Dallas local stations to non-Dallas markets like Tulsa (the local advertisers dont want someone else's car commercials polluting their revenue streams) but similar regulation of internet content seems to be beyond the authority of any one government.
I think if the feds were to tackle such regulation, public pressure would dictate they start with spam (yeah, the CANSPAM act was gutted by the deep advertising pockets who essentially changed the meaning of the word "can").
Meanwhile, you can listen to many Tulsa radio stations live and in their entirety over the web, so im not clear on a double-standard for TV.

Obviously ignorant to you, the webmaster can see the IP of the poster your referring to and can see it's not me and most likely see it is you or one of your cronies.
I'm sorry to the members of this forum that DM has done this and I will quit posting here in hopes of DM's personal agendas towards me doesn't sour this wonderful forum anymore than it has already.
All though some of you have some real issues with me lol, I've enjoy learning and discussing all of the events and agenda's in Tulsa by this very well ran forum, as all the great members on here.
Keep up the great work everyone because a lot of people read this forum even though they do not post. Your words are our future and knowledge.
Best Wishes,
Porky

I will say that I really like KTUL's weather channel today. I turned it on when the storms blew through and it was great to see the updated radars and then the weather person giving us updates. First time I tuned to 247 in during a storm.
Kuddos to KTUL today.
DM, ch247, website weather and all the TV channels of doppler radar were useless to us as after the first minor gust our whole neighborhood lost power once again.
That irony aside, I tuned in the radio to find what was happening. Trusty KRMG had a pinging noise but no weather updates...Talons game pretty entertaining though. One station was hilarious, it kept running promos for what great weather coverage they had but never actually gave the weather!
So doesn't all the hype on weather coverage seem a little hyped?
For the most part, I am very dissapointed with all of the local "news" media.
Channel 2 claims to "Work" for me, but if they did, they would've been fired a long time ago.
Channel 6 continues their cutsie approach complete with canera dollyt shots.
Channel 23 just has a hard time getting its act together technically, and their news readers constantly mispronouce the simplest words.
But the goof award of the year would have to go to channel 8. A number of months back, they did an "expose" on prostitution in Tulsa. They set up a bald middle-aged guy as a decoy in a local motel room and "caught" the hookers they called on tape.
What amazed me about this obvious attempt to pander to an audience, the person they used as bait was none other than Rick Brinkley - the local president of the Better Business Bureau. I will never forget my laughter as I watched Brinkley make a feeble attempt at this cheap journalsim. I 'm still not sure what their point was: that prostitution exists in Tulsa? Or that prostitution is bad? I never could figure that one out.
Also, why did they use the BBB? I knew that the BBB investigitated companies who screwed their customers, but I never new their mandate extended THIS far!

They used the President of the local BBB to solicit prostitution for one simple reason:
Professional Courtesy. The BBB rarely "validates" a complaint against a dues-paying business member of the BBB.
So, it takes one to recognize one.

I would agree that KTUL has about the best web site in the Tulsa market with KOTV a close second.
But I do wish the video news stories worked in Firefox.

Last summer season Chuck advised us to "..throw out any stagnant water you're not using..." in an effort to ward off the deadly West Nile virus. I can think of thousanda of uses for stagnant water.

I think that's that show that McGraw Davisson has on Sunday mornings, right?
I like Beth Rengel. At least she's real. So what if she can cuss like a sailor on a bender? I watched her cuss on the air and thought it did Tulsa some good. This town is waaaay too prudish.
As for local TV, I have never seen a LIBERAL television broadcast in Tulsa. I'm amazed at the number of people here who have seen one. I just can't figure out what channel they're watching.
Maybe they're watching the Oral Roberts satellite network?
Mike Ziegwnhorn was the best sportscaster
Tulsa has ever had.
And to those who do noy like us " liberals",
you time is up with the recent elections.
The Repugs were convincingly and overwhelmingly
voted and booted out of office in a big way.
And this put a big smile on my face.
The big business and filthy rich snobs
have finally got what they have deserves
since the 2000 elections.
We working class are going to and have
taken back from the rich and big business
what they have been stealing the last 6
years.
You all will now have to pay your fair
share of taxes and such out of your own
bulging pockets and bank accounts that
you have stolen from us in the last 6 years
by enacting laws to take from the poor
and give to the rich and big business.
HAHAHAHA....................
I enjoy the fact that not only does that post have pretty much nothing to do with the thread, it assumes no republicans have jobs.
You should watch what you say. There are working class republicans. Most of them have guns.
The Zig sucked....

All I know is I would love to meet Erin Christy from KJRH. She really does it for me.
Of course I'm also strangely attracted to Katie Green from KOTV. Think that has something to do with watching her do the chicken dance at Oktoberfest this year.

I think on an overall basis, KJRH has the best-looking infobabes. I met Erin Christy at the fair and found her to be even prettier in person.
You don't see them on TV, but Casey Roebuck has legs that go on for days and days -- and I'm not usually a leg person.
I thought Fox had it cornered for awhile.
