Title: First Trip to ONEOK!
Post by: erfalf on May 11, 2012, 09:05:38 AM
Making my first venture to the new ballpark. I know it is late, especially for a baseball fan like me. But young kids and a pretty nice ballpark in Bartlesville have moved it down the priority list. I'm am excited though, as some of my co-workers just went and raved.

I'd like to go out to eat before hand. Me, my wife & 3 year old daughter. I think we are leaning toward Caz's. Have never been. Any other recommendations? Would I be disappointed with Caz's?

I think Fat Guy's burgers are a great family pre game option.  Caz's is OK, not one of my favorites downtown though.  Enjoy!  We really love going to the ballpark, you'll have a great time, hopefully your daighter will last to the fireworks!

This^^^^

My first venture to OneOK included Fat Guy's.  Great burgers, essentially on the field and the outdoor dining option is cool (in the covered breezeway in case rain comes, which is possible tonight).  Looks to be a sellout.  I usually park at the lot just east of the railroad tracks on Elgin.  It's only about a two block walk.  I know the University Center allows free parking, but unless you get there early, you'll likely be shut out on that.

Awesome area with great potential.

EDIT:  get there EARLY tonight, especially if it looks to be a sellout.  I'm talking two hours early.

Always wanted to try Fat Guy's. I figured it being adjacent to the ballpark it would be packed pre-game. I can't leave town today until after work unfortunately. So at best we will be rolling into town at 5:45.

Hoss, are you talking about the parking lots north of 1st St? Just wondering. Any parking suggestions would be appreciated. I really don't care if I have to pay to park. I kind of assumed on game nights anything with 5 blocks is going to be pay parking. And by the time I get there all the street parking will be taken. Plus I know there are chances of rain, so I'm probably not going to be in the mood to walk 10 blocks in the rain.

In general what would be the must try restaurant's downtown? My son is getting to the age where we are a little more comfortable with taking him out to reasonable places. Plus my wife and I are about to reinstate the date night every now and then. We already have planned on a long weekend in Tulsa. I think we are planning on staying at the Atlas Courtyard. Mostly because of price and proximity to everything downtown. Any advice? (Keep in mind, I am slowly trying to plant the seeds to get us to move back to Tulsa, however if jobs dictate otherwise, there is no hope, but here's hoping).

McNellie's is always good, but it's more of a pub if you have children.  Their food is quite good though.  Joe Momma's and other places downtown are good.

The parking lot I'm talking about is in the center of this link to Google Maps.

It's the Deborah Brown School parking lot and you're right, it's north of 1st St (when I'm downtown my ordinal directions get all screwed up) on Elgin.  The lot goes west past the Detroit overpass.  It's usually $5 to park there.

Kids love Joe Mamma's with the old 80s style video games.

In keeping with TNF rules requiring a Marshall reference, be sure to try their new All-Star Wheat. It debuted yesterday.

I second the "meh" to Caz's. There are plenty of better places.

This beer, I can only get it by going to a Drillers game?

Caz's has some excellent menu items. He serves the best Cuban sandwich in town,. His chicken-fried steak is also good. I just love his corn/cucumber/bean salad side dish. Caz's Chowhouse also makes the strongest mixed drinks in the Brady.

Fried pickle slices are good.

I like the place.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Although I would love to try Fat Guy's, it doesn't really have anything my daughter would eat. She eats chicken (and turkey I guess), and that's pretty much it. No hamburgers for her. Can barely get her to eat a hot dog from time to time.

I just hope the rain holds off long enough for the fireworks. What are the makeup policies for the Drillers in case of inclement weather anyways. In the minors I've seen games made up at the opponents home field even.

Vouchers for another game.  I went to a Friday fireworks game that had a two-hour rain delay and keep your tickets for replacements.  Pretty simple to do actually.  Heck, the game we had still was played and we were still offered vouchers.

The Drillers are a class act. I am having a company picnic there Monday.

I agree.  The ticket attendants are super nice and always make you feel welcome.  They always thank you for attending as you leave.

A certain other minor league franchise in this city could take some pointers from them.

The game was great. The precipitation completely let up sometime around the first inning. It was cool but not cold. T-Shirt weather. Took my three year old daughter. Walked over to Brady area, which was more difficult than I had anticipated. All the streets around the new museum were closed down. Caz's was alright, safe for kids for sure. But once in the stadium, my daughter loved the play gound, splash pad, and inflatables. Very kid friendly. Sat on the third base side and was surprised I couldn't here any road traffic as there is nothing between the seats and the road literally. And of course the fireworks were great with an amazing background of course.

The only negative that came to mind was that I was just amazed that the stadium costs as much as it did. Only one base line (and the outfield) had built in concessions. The third base side had carts/open air. I understand the field is below grade, and that's not cheep. But I was still wondering where all the money went. That and nothing has occurred in the lots immediately surrounding the stadium except to charge big time for game time parking in non-paved lots. Does the trust own any of the lots surrounding? Were they going to put out bids or what? Or have they and no one was interested. I will say the ballpark is probably in about the best place it could be. Right beside the highway. It's not like anyone would have ever been clamoring for that land. Now it provides kind of a barrier for other development.

The walk to and from Caz's was interesting since we had to go down to Archer to get around. There are no sidewalks at times (and some were fenced in because of construction) and crossing archer at Boston is dicey because traffic doesn't stop. Seems like they would have put in a light or a stop sign considering all the residents at the Tribune/Metro. I'm sure they cross Archer often.
