Title: The 11 States Where Unemployment Is Dropping The Fastest
Post by: stageidea on May 20, 2011, 02:59:48 PM
Oklahoma is number six:
http://www.businessinsider.com/10-states-where-employers-are-hiring-like-crazy-2011-5#6-oklahoma-6
The unemployment rate in Oklahoma has fallen 1.6% in the last year.

Why in all of the top ten polls (that we are featured in), we always seem to be represented by a picture of a road and no signs of life beyond that.  It would be nice if they at least tried to find a picture of a city at least.

I think they took the picture through a wind shield and there's some dead bug material on their.

I was watching national and they talked about rain in Dallas and coming into cities like KC, Topeka, and Little Rock but then just said "Oklahoma" like he couldn't remember there were any population centers here.

An interesting graph.

Just goes to show how well Oklahoma bore up during the late unpleasantness.

Reasons:

1) The crash of 1984
2) oil and gas

we got out ahead of the stats....pity how little gets plowed back into education.

Real unemployment is around %18 nationally.

How to lie with statistics...

Nate, you know the answer. Those that are no longer considered eligible to count because they've been out of work too long. You know, the "ones" that don't want to work or are too depressed without medical insurance to get help getting off the floor.

That's not how the stats work. If they're looking for work and available to work, they're "unemployed". If they've quit looking but are available to work, they're "discouraged workers," which do not count, but are published separately.

There's also the labor participation rate which covers everybody who isn't working for any reason, including retirement.

Quote
Is the count of unemployed persons limited to just those people receiving
unemployment insurance benefits?

No; the estimate of unemployment is based on a monthly sample survey of households.
All persons who are without jobs and are actively seeking and available to work
are included among the unemployed. (People on temporary layoff are included even if
they do not actively seek work.) There is no requirement or question relating to
unemployment insurance benefits in the monthly survey.

Does the official unemployment rate exclude people who have stopped
looking for work?

Yes; however, there are separate estimates of persons outside the labor force who
want a job, including those who have stopped looking because they believe no jobs
are available (discouraged workers). In addition, alternative measures of labor
underutilization (some of which include discouraged workers and other groups not
officially counted as unemployed) are published each month in The Employment
Situation news release.

Has anyone noticed that since Mary Fallin took control unemployment has been dropping at a steady rate, the Oklahoma economy is starting to take off. Gov. Henry had the economy stumbling along.

Nebraska & Omaha also had low unemployment all thru this Obama recession. Nebraska has policys that are favorable to business. Anyone in Omaha who really wants to work can find a job there. I guess Nebraska is not listed on the chart because the rate there always has been low and can't fall much much faster.

The gov't makes the policies - the tax structure, the laws and regulations- if those are not favorable to business they will go elsewhere. Slap in a lot of high taxes and regulations and watch compaines flee to neighboring states. The gov't has alot to do when it comes to jobs and the economy. Mary Fallin is making a state gov't that is favorable to business with a friendly business climate, and she cuts regulations- that makes jobs. If you raise taxes on a company then issue all sorts of regulations and controls you'll get a economy like Michigan.

In Michigan's case it's both, but the state chased many car companies, (and small companies that make parts for the car companies) out of the state with high taxes and regulations. Other states with alot of regulations and  high taxes lose jobs to more friendly states like Texas. Mary Fallin is making Oklahoma a friendly state for companies to do business in, and that means jobs and a robust economy. The bottom line is the gov't does play a roll in the economy since they control the free market place with taxes, rules, and regulations.  :-X

I shouldn't have gotten rid of my tractor feed wide format dot matrix Oki some years back. ;)

My laser printer jams a lot more often. I probably need to replace the rollers, but the roller kit is only slightly less expensive than a new printer.

I still have my Epson LQ-1000, wide body, 24 pin, tractor feed.  It's parallel port so I would need some kind of adapter to use it since my old computer died.

My latest (now almost 5 years old!) laptop doesn't have an onboard parallel port but the docking station has one, luckily.

I think this is what you need. It's 8 bucks:

Centronics at the printer, 25 pin D-sub at the other end is the cable I have.  (Not to be confused with a 25 pin D-sub serial connector which was the opposite gender.)

Edit:

I should probably get a new laptop.  It's vintage mid 90s, Win 95.  I have to hold the CD drive closed and the last time I tried to use it, the 3-1/2 FDD wouldn't read.  I obviously don't have much need for laptop but I have a few applications that need one.

Edit 2:

Compatibility - presently running an iMac.

There are a few parallel port devices that have 25 pin d-subs, but they're pretty rare. Almost all 25 pin d-subs on computer peripherals are serial, as you noted.

It's amazing how long dot matrix printers will go. One of my clients has had an Epson DFX-8000 for nearly 20 years, and they printed several hundred pages on a slow day until about 5 years ago when they replaced it with an 8500 because it's quite a bit faster. They still use the 8000 to print checks so they don't have to bother with changing out the paper and getting it lined up correctly.

The 8500 is dual-feed, but they already have 8.5x11 on one feed and wide format green/white spreadsheet paper on the other.

Printing checks on a laser printer is so much easier in that sense, but you have to have software that can write the routing and account numbers on the bottom correctly and MICR toner, which doesn't come cheap. Depending on who you're writing checks to, you can sometimes get away without MICR since most banks just scan them, do OCR, and destroy the original these days, but there are a few banks out there that insist on doing things the old way and they get upset (and charge large fees) if they have to manually process the checks because the routing and account numbers aren't in magnetic ink.

Yes, they keep changing the way unemployment is counted to make the rate look lower than it really is. The real rate today under Obama is around 17% that is if you count all the unemployed jobless people- but they don't count people job hunting who have not yet found work as being unemployed- people with part time jobs and the under employed, or people who just gave up looking for work and dropped out none of those count against the unemployment rate. Since Mary took control our jobless rate kept falling & falling and our economy got better & better. Her pro-business atitude and get gov't out of the way atitude way are big factors for business when it comes time to hire, expand and grow in a state- or close up shop and move elsewhere to another state  where the business climate is more favorable. If you were a business looking for a state to move to- or expand in where whould you go? To a high tax, high regulation state or to a low tax low regulation state?

It hasn't changed since sometime in the 90s (at least). I've posted the citation to how the rate is calculated many times. And the BLS publishes numbers on the underemployed and the discouraged workers, as well as the overall labor participation rate (which includes people who aren't working and don't want work, like retirees, SAHMs, and students)

Unemployment jumped once more in May. Obama is taking our nation in the  wrong direction. The raising of the debt ceiling all the time instead of cutting spending will result in the USA becoming like Greece, Moodys rating will take the USA down a notch or two if that spending is not cut. Things are still as grim as ever. The housing market also fell another 5%. They say the economy can't recover much until the housing market reverses direction. ::)

Well Willard Mitt Romney announced and so far he seems to be the front.  However he was b-slapped by she-who-shall-not-be named when she stole his thunder the same day.

As long as he has 'RomneyCare' over his head, he might be unelectable to the base as well.

What can Obama run on? What has Obama done in 3 years to improve things? Everything got worse. Unemployment is up, many people just gave up looking for work, the housing market fell another 5%, gasoline is $5.00 a gallon in many cities, people only have so much money in a paycheck and spending huge chunks on fuel will bring on a double dip recession. The economy is in shambles.  Nothing improved since Obama came to power. IMO anyone can beat Obama even Micky Mouse or Goofy. I don't see how Obama can win a 2nd term many people who voted for Obama in 2008 are sorry they did. As I see it the only way Obama can win in 2012 would be if a 3rd party formed and split the GOP vote. Obama is a one term president and will go down in history as a failure like Jimmy Carter. Maybe Obama can get a hammer and pound away on houses with Jimmy Carter. :D

What has anyone else proposed in the GOP?  How about your handwriting, bus-touring nimrod half term governor who doesn't even know what Paul Revere did during his midnight ride?

You sure are a special kind of stoopid, as another post infers.

How about you go back to posting at the World website.  At least there you can feel at home with all the other 'mental giants' over there.

Yep here comes the name calling. GOP has proposed doing the exact oppiset of Obama, cutting spending. Tell me what I said that was incorrect about Obama? The unemployment rate went up in May, that's a fact, the economy is in shambles, no questions about that, gasoline prices are in orbit I'm right about that, the national debt is thru the roof, what is incorrect in my post? Looks like Mr. Stoopid is dead on center about Obama. We are in the worst recession since the great depression, even worse than the Jimmy Carter Era. Hope & Change!  The real unemployment rate is around 17% anyhow not 9%. I guess people will be driving to the polls in 2012 with $4.00, $5.00, or even $6.00 a gallon gasoline and vote for Obama. Yep Obama really earned a 2nd term he did so good. >:(

And the GOP has bankrupted this country.  How about all that economic crap that happened under Dubya?  If you inherit a $hit sandwich it's gonna be a while before you get the taste out of your mouth.

And how about increasing the tax rate to pre-Bush taxes?  You know, the ones where the top 1 percent of earners get their taxes raised 3 percent.  The Bush tax cuts did more to hurt the deficit than anything.

But like you always do, you can't cite anything specific.  I guess the timer on the computers at the library go out before you can get past typing in your Google login.

All I'm saying is that the current crop of GOP candidates won't pass muster until they accept the fact that Medicare is the untouchable, which doesn't quite ride in the face of the Tea Party ideology.  And Independents won't vote for bat-smile crazy nominess.  Remember what happened to Daddy Bush's second term when Indies got in the mix...

You fail to realise the the market and the economy start going south in july of 2007 and slid contiunually until January of 2009 when it started to pull itself back together. As for oil prices, they peaked in July of 2008 from people gambling in the speculation market. Oil hit $142.00 bbl on July 14th of 2008 and the price of gsoline on the commodity market was $3.71/gallon, only to drop to $1.43/gallon December 26 of 2008. Also the unemployment rate started to climb in 2007 as well. I'm not a fan of Obama, but geez try and get something right, he wasn't even elected when everything started going to hell.

Put well..better than I could have in a shorter time frame.

As much as many here would like to think, to the contrary I think Obama has done some good things, but those have been overshadowed by many of the same things he's allowing (GitMo, extrension of Wiretap laws and Patriot Act).

The only thing you forgot to mention was that in 2007 the democrats took control of Congress and that's when the downhill side started. Remember it was under Bush that we had 4.5% unemployment rates for the better part of his term and Bush also had the stockmarket at 14,000 points in 2006. (BTW I am no big fan of Bush he's a RINO for the most part)  Anyhow, If you  liked  the last 3 years of recession and want more of it  vote for Obama, if you want a booming economy and cheap oil prices vote for a tea party member for president. Herman Cain would make a outstanding president,... Obama is worse than Jimmy Carter. It now looks like we are heading into a double dip recession partly due to the high fuel prices, the housing market is not improving  it's only getting worse. We tryed it Obama's way and it failed- now let's reverse direction and get a conservative president and republicans in the senate.

Sure, but you failed to mention that Obama thinks we have 57 states and he signed the guest book in the UK during his last visit with the year "2008" Obama does not even know what year it is... Palin also had more job experience than Obama in the 2008 election, and she does not need a teleprompter to talk... Obama was  a street corner organizer and that sets the bar rather low for the office of the president. Obama is in way over his head.

Hahaha!

Last time I checked, Palin quit.  Says a lot about a person when they quit for money.

And about the teleprompter?  For her, that's too high tech, she uses her hand.

Please-This is NOT about Palin, she is not the president, these are reports of about how poorly Obama is running the country.  Palin this and  Palin that, she has no power. This is all Obama's ball game put the blame where it belongs. This current mess  is  NOT  Bush's fault- Bush left office long, long ago. Put the blame where it belongs on Obama & the democrats. If Palin was the president we'd have cheap $1.50 gasoline right now and a low unemployment of around 4% and larger paychecks due to less taxes. The economy would be humming along if Palin was the one in the whitehouse, but she's not so forget about her- Let's get real and face the grim Obama mess we are in today. If you want another 4 years of this mess vote for Obama.

It's hard to forget about Palin when the liberals and media won't leave her alone. Some nut case author who's name escapes me  even rented a house next to Sarah's home in Alaska just so he can peak in the windows and find any dirt he can write about. They even attack her family, her children and husband, and guess what she has not even entered the race yet, the people who have entered the 2012 race are put on the back burner. The democrats are afraid of Sarah Palin...  If Palin was just a stupid woman and a walking joke they would not work so hard to destroy her they would ignore her.

I believe you are confused on this issue. Palin is the one wanting attention. She is the one who sends out press releases each day where her bus is going.

She is clearly campaigning and using her political action committee to raise funds to pay for the trip. How could you not see this?

According to the Saturday Tulsa World, the May jobless rate fell once more in Oklahoma. The rate has dropped every month since Gov. Mary Fallin took power. I'd say her friendly-pro business atitudes and tax cutting ideas are a big cause. Companies know that when a Gov.  is pro-business there won't be any more choking regulations or higher taxes on them so they feel more postive about the economy and  about expanding and hiring. The results speak for themselfs.

I am glad the unemployment rate is dropping, but I don't think it is all due to her. Remember, it was dropping before she was in office.

Texas is attracting tons of jobs. Companies are fleeing places like California &  New York for Texas, Mary Fallin would like to tap into that Texas magnet and change some of Oklahoma's laws to be more pro-business, and take some jobs that would otherwise re-locate to Texas and bring them into Oklahoma. The "USA Today" newspaper of 06-21-11 had a cover story about Texas attracting jobs. At the pace Texas is growing it'll #1  with the largest economy and largest population very soon.  Mary Fallin needs to get rid of the corp. income taxes and that will take some doing.  :D
