Title: KRMG - Shut up already
Post by: Hawkins on January 19, 2011, 08:00:56 PM
Since Noon today they've been doing that annoying weather-beep thing every 5-minutes and breaking into programming every 20 minutes or so to warn us of our impending doom.

Just looked outside at 8:00pm and its partly-to-mostly cloudy and 37 degrees with no precipitation.

Was it worth it? The grocery stores thank you, but that guy sitting in his snow-plow (I just passed a few minutes ago) on the Creek Turnpike is probably bored as all get out right now.

Lame!

The last time we had a OHMYGODITSGONNASNOWANDWEREALLGONNADIE alert, I photographed a truck with a snow plow attached to the front.  It was parked outside IHOP and the driver was inside having breakfast.  He was kinda tickled that I took the photo.

And it didn't snow.

I'll have to find that photo.

I have to question their judgement.  As I was getting on the BA yesterday, it resembled a parking lot.  Can they give more frequent traffic updates so I could have taken an alternate route?  No.  But they were able to share a breaking news alert that Regis Philbin was announcing his retirement.  WRGAF that Regis is retiring? How about some relevant info and not beating it into the ground.

While I hated the traffic, I loved living in Houston because their news radio shows did 'traffic and weather, together on the nines'.  All day.  EVERY day, 24/7.  So I always knew what the traffic conditions were and could account for it.

I'm not saying that Tulsa needs that, but that nightmare that is now the BA outbound just SW of the IDL at Utica is stupid.  It gets stupid congested at the weirdest times.  And most of it is the typical Oklahoma driver trying to get to the head of the line to beat the merge.  It would be nice to have some sort of traffic channel, or something.

It has begun.

"ALL Snow, on ALL Channels, ALL the time". Surely something else happened in Tulsa during the night. Then, to make it even sweeter, I clear off my wife's car, heat it up and take it out to see how the roads are. I am immediately tailgaited by some moron in a huge SUV even though I'm driving at a pretty good rate of speed, practically at the dry pavement speed limit on 21st. It gets worse. HE FLASHED HIS BRIGHTS ON ME WHEN I SIGNALED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN BACK INTO THE NEIGHBORHOOD. People....relax. This isn't a game show.

Arrogant SOB probably was scared at the unusual sight of a turn signal being used.

Probably thought you were stabbing your brakes or flashing your 4-ways with a bulb out.

Thank you for venting what we are all thinking!  I think turn signals must have become an option.  Their use appears to be less in more expensive vehicles.

Hoss, that's precisely why it slows down, it's the jackass who thinks they need to go to the front of the line. If they would get in line with everyone else, it would flow so much faster and there would be fewer collisions resulting from jack-rabbit stops.

So did everyone raise gas prices 10-or-so cents a gallon overnight, or is it just the station at 31st & Memorial (who was cited for price gouging during the ice storm)?

No sense in wearing out something expensive to fix.   It's even more expensive in an expensive car.   ;D

He actually flashed his brights twice. Once when he tailgated me for a block and again when I hit the turn signal (a half block before the turn). Perhaps some people think that the center lane in the city is like the fast lane on the highway and expect you to just get out of their way. In the city that lane is also a turn lane and when it snows it is often the only lane.

Waterboy +1
I started watching Fox 23 last night for news and got the local "Weather Channel"
Good lawd, no robberies, killings, drive by's, tagging or Mayor bashings going on ?
I mean this is Tulsa right ? I have lived here my whole life and I am truly embarrassed at the total wussification of this City.
I have three ravenous eating children who just love having the Schools close down almost the night before we even see anything happen. I'm sure the decision was made purly on the, Wholly crap we are going to get a inch or two of Blizzard like flakes hitting us over night, hoard the food and fuel people we will never ride this out kind of broadcasts all the local meteorologist start pushing every 2 minutes the day before.
As I write this. Icicles are falling and the snow is melting off my car. How will we every make it through this ?

Linksfahrer

Most drivers I have had to follow going slow in the inside lane are not turning left.  They are just being discourteous.  It's even more obvious when they keep pace with the driver in the lane to the right going 10 to 15 under the speed limit.

Disclaimer:  I am talking about good weather and road conditions.

I was thinking to myself this idiot tailgating Waterboy was more than welcome to fire around in the fresh powder in the right lane at any time in his honking fast SUV.  That guy would have earned a well deserved middle finger salute from me.

Last year on Christmas day, I drove to OKC to spend the holiday with FMC and her family.  The turnpike was hard-pack and you could run 55 to 60 comfortably and there were areas they had plowed and they were just wet.  Never failed, the people driving Escalades and Hummers just had to do 75 or 80 on the hard pack and become a nuisance for everyone else.  I laughed my donkey off when I saw one of the Escalades stuck in a snow bank off the right side of the highway on down the road.  I bet he/she felt real smart about putting their life and everyone else's in danger by trying to shave 10-20 minutes off their trip on Christmas day.

Conan,
You KNOW those people are special!!!  They are deserving!!  They are entightled!  They listen to KRMG, where Hannity tells them to go buy a Hummer and drive fast in ice!

I see the same thing regularly on the turnpike.  Stupid people.

It's not at 9, but KRMG does the same thing.

You've lead a sheltered life Scott.  I used to think the same way....until Houston.

Traffic jams here are 12 midnight on Thursday there..haha.

Just one of the reasons I don't want to live in Houston, Dallas, LA, San Francisco,......

If I have to wait more than two traffic light cycles, I want to call it a traffic jam.   :)

Why can't people understand that when there is ice and snow on the roads, ease into it.  No matter what it is, ease into it.  No, they think they have to slam on the brakes, cram the accelerator to the floor and crank the wheel as far as it'll go.  Coming up 11th street there were several vehicles (trucks and SUVs) stuck at the light there, so a few people turned into Home Depot to go around it.  I turned in just behind two SUVs.  Of course, the one directly in front of me think that since it's going up hill they had to floor it to make it up it.  Once their their tires broke loose, they lost momentum fast, which meant I had to stop.  It wasn't long before I was cussing the truck behind me because they were moving out of my way as I'm backing down this hill as this SUV is coming towards me.  The truck gets wise and is able to get around the two of us and go on.  As soon as he gets by, the SUV canters off to the left and blocks the entire drive.  I did get the chance to impress my coworker (running to pick up him was actually the reason for being there) with my wheel man techniques as I kept it in reverse, got moving back down the hill, cut the wheel and spun the car around while dropping it back into drive.  Made a neat little move to get turned around and away from the SUV still flooring it and only going backwards.

How about 71st?  That's about as close to those cities as I've seen here.  That and the current state of affairs on the BA just SE of downtown.

As much as I detest all the stores along Memorial, I don't need to go to 71st that often.  I went to the Transit Planning meeting downtown last night.  That's the first I've been downtown since mid December.  There are some areas around Tulsa that really get slow.
