Pretty cool story about his Tulsa connections in that article.

QuotePetty has a Tulsa tie, and it's a strong one.

For decades, a story has floated around Petty, and how he did some of his recording in the early 1970s at Tulsa's Shelter Records studio (now known as The Church at Third Street and Trenton Avenue in Tulsa's Pearl District), then co-owned by local musicman Leon Russell and British rock-industry figure Denny Cordell.

So why did the Floridian traverse to Tulsa to do his early recording? An interview with Petty ran in the Dec. 3, 2005, edition of Billboard gave us the oft-sought answer. He and his band, Mudcrutch, returned to their home state after spending time in L.A. passing out demo tapes and trying to get a record deal. Then Cordell called.

"He said, 'If you're going to drive from Florida to L.A., it wouldn't be far out of your way to stop in Tulsa, Oklahoma,'" Petty told interviewer Melinda Newman. "'I have a studio there, and let's meet each other and see how it feels.'"

The group ended up signing with Shelter, which released the first Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' eponymous debut in 1976. And, although the group did some recording in Tulsa, it's unclear whether any of that material made it onto the band's debut disc.

However, extremely rare early tapes still exist in the vast archive of Russell's recordings, curated by another Tulsa Sound icon, Steve Ripley, at a location outside of the city.

I'll be there.  He puts on a hell of a show.
