For the record...I am a Tulsa resident and, outside of the occasional QT stop, always spend my money in Tulsa.
...however,
With the "Buy Bixby" & "Buy BA" promotions, I have to say that I am impressed with their efforts to increase tax revenue.
Curious to know your thoughts on buying online, and the economic impact on Tulsa
I do most of my shopping in Tulsa. Living near 21st and Yorktown I have no need to shop Bixby or BA. As for shopping on line, if I can't find it here then I shop for it on line.

that is what happens when you have a Chamber of Commerce working for you and no one else.[;)]
I think we should get a fund together and try to bribe the Tulsa Development Authority, the Chamber of Commerce, and whatever other groups we can and get them to work for Tulsa.

Online has a minor impact IMHO. If I plan far enough ahead and the savings is worthwhile, I will buy online. However, if a store offers something I need now, or in a way that I can not get online (need to touch/feel or knowledge of sales staff) they, and the city's tax revenue, are safe.
Per buying "local." I prefer locally owned stores and prefer to buy close to my home. But if someone else offers a better product (either product, service, or price) then they earn my business.

I can't speak for the TDA, but to get the Tulsa "Metro" CoC to work for only Tulsa's interests, they would have to first stop being a "metro" chamber.
This should be a platform point of any KKT mayoral opponent, promise to stop funding the metro chamber and form a Tulsa CoC.
I guess this stuff goes on all over. In Omaha the saying goes "Buy The From Big "O", the bumper stickers say "Buy From the Big Oh & Keep your money in Omaha"! It's just a play on words. Any money spent in the Omaha metro area helps everyone who lives there, so I guees the same would apply to Tulsa. Heck split the difference and shop in GlenPool or Jenks.[:)]

Omaha is a city-county government now and is comparing apples to oranges.
Can we get a residency requirement around here? Is there an Ohio forum some place where I can come **** on your threads?
I thought the point of the Tulsa Metro Chamber was to promote the Tulsa Metro Chamber... If that's not the point, someone should tell them.
well, they do a good job of that, but I'm not sure the city should be paying for them to inflate their egos.

I take back all the ugly things I've said about you. Well... most of them. [:D]
You couldn't be more right.
I have also seen television ads lately for "Buy Owasso." Residents of these communities should certainly support local businesses and keep sales tax $ at home when possible.
I have only bought items online of a unique nature that can not be bought at local retailers. Mostly modern home furnishings of a specific design/manufacturer that are not sold locally or have to be special ordered anyway. If online buyers are honest, they report these purchases and pay use tax via their state income tax filing, and the use tax is remitted to local authorities.

hahaha...use tax....that has to be the biggest farce and joke of a tax there has ever been. I remember hearing Master Bates blather about it on KFAQ one time and I just laughed. The person who actually reports this has to be the biggest rube in town. I wonder how much use tax our mayor and other elected officials have reported? I'm guessing zilch, nada, zippo.
Why is it a "metro" chamber if the burbs have their own? Has it always been like this? If not, when/why.

well, it seems like they are kind of like the universe, they have just always been around for as long as people can remember. I don't think anything precludes a company from being a member of say the BA chamber and the tulsa metro. But plastered all over their web site it states they are a regional organization. However I would guess if Tulsa pulled its funding they would disappear overnight. So in that regard they are sorta like a parasite, they provide little to no direct benefit to their host while they drain us of money.
These buy local campaigns by BA, Bixby, et al are where the money meets the road. They are wildly successful campaigns.
The real issue is not whether I think they shoudl exist or not ( I could care less either way) but it is a matter of representation. Most of the surrounding CoCs were created because they needed an organization that lobbied for issues local to their municipality. So Jenks CoC can go down to the capital and lobby for Jenks issues, BA, for theirs, etc etc. But when Tulsa needs a voice at the capitol we have Tulsa Metro who does NOT have ONLY Tulsa's best interests at heart.
This is the whole crux of their new "One voice" bull**** because they hear the criticism and they see their viability threatened. Only problem is their mission and their "one voice" are mutually exclusive, because you can't promote just Tulsa when your mission is to be a regional organization.
a fair scenario would be for Tulsa to create its own CoC and divert most of the funds to it. Then the new CoC (and any surrounding CoCs) could contribute to Tulsa Metro for representation on regional issues
Inteller is making a lot of sense here, I'm getting scared.
He also gets mega points for using the word "rube."
My favorite Tulsa COC accomplishment is when they were blowing their horn about how great the Bass Pro shop was for Tulsa...yes the one in Broken Arrow.
During the buy BA I bought everything in BA...had a boatload of tickets...didn't win..but was in the running!

"Rube" is a slang term meaning unsophisticated, a "bumpkin" if you will. Inteller doesn't get any points from me because his use of the term was improper. A rube may be foolish, but a foolish person is not necessarily a rube.
Since when does being honest and complying with state tax laws make one a rube? I have paid use taxes on my internet purchases via my state income tax form as required by law. I also follow city code regarding the maintenance and use of my homestead property. Does that also make me a "rube?"
I was answering the original question regarding the economic impact of internet commerce. The answer is that if everyone pays the taxes they are legally bound to, the impact is minimal, at least from a tax collection standpoint. Local jobs and business profits, that is another matter.

when they start putting up the PAY YOUR USE TAX signs around town, remind me to make sure your picture is on the poster. You must be that .001 percent that the state says reports use taxes every year. congratulations.

The "Metro Area" is what really counts, everyone is in the same boat. If Tulsa flounders, the rest of the metro area does to. The Las Vegas police dept. use the term "Metro Police" on the sides of their cars, even though they are only Las Vegas Police, outside of Las Vegas the Clark County Sheriff runs the show. My guess is the Tulsa Chamber is pro-Tulsa and it's nearby cities.[B)]

There are actually a couple of chambers within Tulsa, and yes, they fight each other.
