Last night while sitting on the patio of a downtown restaurant late afternoon, I noticed a couple of employees sitting at the bar smoking. It didn't really bother me, until they got up and retrieved their own chips from the bin. I just felt that they should at least wash their hands.
It reminded me of an even bigger pet peeve of mine. Employees who take smoke breaks in front of their stores. It bothers me seeing employees lingering around smoking near the entrance of say an Office Depot. I have noticed this with several businesses. It makes a place look downright trashy.
Don't get me wrong, even though I detest cigarettes and prefer instead a good Dunhill pipe or Ashton VSG cigar, I whole heartedly support the rights of someone who wants to kill themselves with cigarettes, liquor, food, etc. etc. I just wonder if retail businesses realize it might be in their best interest to allow a back door exit with a smoking area. Sure the issues with stealing, code, etc. etc. are a problem, but the exterior of your store's appearance makes the first impression.
Maybe this isn't a big deal to most people. I taught customer service to new dealers for a major company for over fifteen years, maybe it's me that's being overly sensitive.
What do you think?
Mr. Burns
I'm opposed to smoking in front of all downtown buildings. It makes myself and others sick. It's a disgusting habit and needs to be banned outright.
I've noticed a lot of downtown businesses send their employees to back alleys to smoke. Others don't care, but I question certain businesses that are fine with the 50-something year old secretary looking like she's in her late 70's while stopping outside to smoke six times a business day.
Whatever the occupation, the smoke break should be out of sight of the customer with a trip to the WC to wash your hands after.
I quit about 12 years ago when my company made a $2,000 contribution to the charity of my choice if I would quit. I directed the money to an immigrant assistance group.
But something about the antismoking crusade smells like Puritanical obsessing to me. When I turn 75 I'm going to go out and buy a carton of Camels and a bottle of Scotch and forgot all about self-improvement.
Meanwhile, there's something more disturbing than cigarette smoke and that's the princess that feels like the unpopularity of smoking gives her license to be very rude to smokers.
Cigarette litter pisses me off.
Nobody wants to see your butt.
You have a keen eye Mr. Burns. I also think it looks kind of trashy and I especially don't like seeing restaurant employees with dirty smocks on by the back door. But I don't let it bother me. If I saw everything they do I would never go out to eat. McDonalds used to have glass panels around their cooking area so that customers could see how clean and well operated their stores were. It made us work harder to keep things clean since customers were watching. However, the quality of employees is different now. Can't do that.
Security wise most retailers won't let employees go in and out of the back door without pass setting off an alarm. They have to smoke out front and usually look pretty guilty doing it. At only $8.75 hr they shouldn't think twice.
the area around city hall has become a lot more trashy looking and smoke filled. before, companies in there would make employees cross the street to smoke. Now the Ceetee Wurkers go the minimum distance from the door and smoke.

I would like those smokers to also take the stairs after they smoke. Who really likes standing in close quarters with someone smelling like a monkey's donkey and having that smell get absorbed into your clothes.

AMEN TO THAT! What makes the matter worse is you see these women that look hawt, and then you ride back up the elevator with them after a smoke break and suddenly they look disgusting. it reminds me of that movie Shallow Hal where the hot chick in real life looks completely gross to Hal.
One day I went down to my building's snack bar to buy a granola bar because I was starving. On the way back, this woman, smelling of cancer sticks, comments on my "healthy breakfast." I told her I'd take bets on who lives longer.
How's the view from your high horses guys?
My horse stinks of cigarettes, he might be high...I haven't asked him.

Healthy and not smelling like a monkey's donkey.
I was waiting for someone outside a business when I noticed what appeared to be white mulch or marble under all the landscaping out front. It was cigarette butts - thousands of them!
My employer intimated that unless the outdoor smoking areas were kept clean, smokers could be required to leave company property for a smoke break. That would mean going through security and leaving a record of your gate time in and out. People got much better at cleaning up after themselves.
Just out of curiosity, guido911, how do you know what a monkey's donkey smells like?

Can't say I've ever had that problem, aside from when standing in a smoke filled room, which I doubt the elevator is. If it is filled with smoke, you might think about evacuating the building using the stairs after reaching your floor, as there is obviously a fire.

quite good, thank you for asking. Nothing pisses me off more then getting into a rental car (practically new mind you) and it reeks of smoke. Alot (not all) of smokers have no regard for other people that do not smoke. They simply take it upon themselves to trash a new rental car that I am sure many non smoking people will find disgusting.

I get a kick out of seeing smokers huddled like nervous mice inside airport smoking "lounges." I think if people have to smoke at work, it should be in small glass enclosed rooms so the rest of us can see first hand how intent the smokers are in decreasing the surplus population.

I think STL does. ATL and LAX do as well, or they did last time I was there.

Doesn't smell like crap and cancer free, so pretty much better than the view of smokers.

no, not in the terminals I've been in. I always see people smoking outside. If you are counting the frequent flier club rooms that's different.
I am told IAH does, but they are hard to find.
Something about being near family services.

GOOD ONE!!!
i second you on the city hall workers.. i was at the new building this past week and had to walk through the smokers barrage to gain access to the front door. must have been 12-15 people out there smoking within 10' of the main doors.
thrifty car rental HQ on 31st and darlington makes employees leave the company grounds to smoke, so there is often people on the north side of 31st street smoking and they leave their butts all along the curb and grass median. same policy for st john med center, so they gather on utica square property.
it makes me want to choose another store when i see its employees smoking in front of the place..
take a bold step and ban smoking in public areas and streets in tulsa.
Even worse, I seen workers at fast food joints cleaning up the lobby and mopping the floor in slow peroids. When someone goes in and orders food they don't was their hands, they handle the food right after mopping the floor. I have noticed that all over. There is enough blame to go around.
All the hospitals in Tulsa are non-smoking facilies. OSU MC is the only one that actually enforces a zero tolerance policy. Employees can not even have a lit cigarette when they arrive in the parking area. The MUST be off property. If they arrive on property with a lit one in their car they can and will be approached by security. Smokers have not liked this policy at all and security has never slacked.
I hear SF will still let about anyone smoke in the parking lot anytime they want, some patients are even allowed to smoke in front like always. SJMC employees can smoke about anywhere outside.
Hillcrest will also try real hard to make them not smoke.
At OSU MC we do have employees that will spend their entire break walking off property to have a smoke. I think its crazy.
What are we going to do when adjacent businesses begin to sue for employees crossing the street to smoke on their property? It's going to happen , DHS has already asked OSU MC employees not to smoke on their's. It was kinda a push and shove for awhile with surrounding businesses.
Plus I think its defeating the purpose. If you work at a hospital and are always telling people it is bad for them to smoke, does it not look real stupid for you to go outside 20 minutes later to smoke? You also see people dying from it also! Are you STUPID?
Maybe there can be a law stating that there can be No Smoking within 30 Feet of an Entrance or Exit?
How bout not in front of any building?
Smokers must also pick up there butts.(ie.. if you have a repeat offender you have a way to stop them?)Like the one creating the pile under the shrubs? We had people who would spend their entire break outside smoking and be standing right beside the ashtray and they would STILL throw their butts on the ground. It was pointless.
But isn't it crazy to have to create a new LAW for so many things that should just be common sense??
This is why we have so many CRAZY people in the world.
