I am looking forward to this debate.
Biden is witty and knowledgable, but can be overbearinging and long-winded. Palin seems out of her comfort zone, but won her debates as governor with an ability to have her opponents look foolish.
The key is to be able to give real answers that make good sense. Nobody expects a home run or a strikeout, but they should look good in the batter's box.
Al Gore lost his election to Bush in the first debate because he pouted when Bush was distorting the truth. He looked just like the kid in the class with his hand up trying to correct the other student. Nobody likes that guy. Biden has to stay focused on his answers and try not to correct hers.
Palin has such low expectations that she only has to use complete sentences this time for people to feel she has improved. Palin has everything to gain tomorrow night. I don't think that Biden can lose the election for Obama with a bad debate, but Palin can go a long way to help McCain win in November.
So far, Palin has had the same three answers or so to every question. It will be interesting to see if she begins to repeat herself in the debate on live TV.
Rachel Maddow was saying last night that after watching the "Couric tapes" that expectations are so low for Gov. Palin that she might be able to pull off a win.
Biden is well-versed on the issues, he's going to have to watch his temper and snark factor.

Agreed.
I was a little shocked, however, that Palin couldn't name a newspaper or magazine she read. Was she nervous? Intimidated by Couric? Wow, did I just say that?
Who knows? She quickly becoming the butt of many jokes.
I thought it was pretty amazing that she couldn't name a newspaper, but my take was that she needed to check before answering to make sure her list of reading material was approved by the McCain campaign.
I hear rumors of one more gaffe coming out today when Palin cannot name a Supreme Court decision.
I expect she will do better than expected, though that is not saying much.
Biden will have a difficult time trying to show that he is much, much more knowledgable without appearing to be condescending.
I expect that both will largely ignore one and other, and try to attack the top candidate of the other party.
I wouldn't be surprised if more people watch Thursday's debate than watched the presidential debate last week.

Seems that the debate Moderator is being challenged today as having a slight built in bias for Senator Obama.
VP Debate Moderator Gwen Ifill, from PBS, will have a book published soon.
The title is "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama," which is to be published by Doubleday on Jan. 20, 2009, the day a new president is inaugurated.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26978194/
Naturally, Ms. Ifill claims no bias.
Oh, really?
Maybe?
Debate drinking game
Prior to beginning the game, the group must pick an official arbiter who will make all official decisions. Their word is law.
Sarah Palin
Anytime Governor Palin says:
"Gosh"
"9-11"
"Y'know"
"Well Gwen"
"Islamic Fundamentalists"
"Russia" and/or "Pootin"
"Job-creation"
"hockey mom"
"Joe six-pack"
everyone drinks.
If Trig is being hoisted around in the audience, take a drink.
If Trig get's a another spit-makeover by his sister or father, take 2 drinks and do the same thing to yourself.
Every time you see the "First Dude", take a drink and do a jumping chest bump with someone.
Anytime the television audience nervously giggles at a Governor Palin non-sequitur, everyone yells "Katie, I'd like to use my lifeline!" and drinks. Arbiter will have final say as to what qualifies, though not a hard call to make.
If Governor Palin should break down in tears and leave the stage prematurely - chug every last drop of booze in the room, doff your clothing and run naked through the neighborhood hooting in a schadenfreude-induced celebration.
Joe Biden
Anytime Senator Biden says:
"Aw c'mon"
"Malarkey"
"Scranton"
"Well Gwen"
"The policies of George Bush"
"Dick Cheney"
"John's a friend of mine" or a variation thereof
"Joe six-pack"
everyone drinks.
Anytime Senator Biden looks up to the rafters, audibly sighs OR raises his voice beyond an appropriate level out of sheer exasperation, everyone drinks. Arbiter will have final say as to what qualifies, though not a hard call to make.
Anytime Senator Biden makes an inappropriate reference to Governor Palin's gender, everyone drinks. Arbiter will have final say as to what qualifies, though not a hard call to make because you probably will hear Biden's handlers slapping their foreheads and blurting "D'oh!".
Anytime Senator Biden makes the sign of the cross and asks for God to grant him patience, everyone drink from their partner's drink as if being given communion.
When Senator Biden looks at Governor Palin and says "Get the hell off this stage, you're an insult to the process!" or any variation thereof - chug every last drop of booze in the room, doff your clothing and run naked through the neighborhood just for the hell of it.
The Chilla from Wasilla - The official drink for Governor Palin
Scale ingredients to servings - Serve in a Mason Jar
3 oz amaretto almond liqueur
1 pint beer (preferably Midnight Sun Kodiak Brown)
2 oz Coca-Cola®
Pour the amaretto into the jar over crushed ice. Follow it up by pouring a chilled beer (Alaskan if possible). Then top it off with the Coke.
The Moji-Joe - The official drink for Senator Biden
1 1/2oz. Light Rum
1 oz. Lime Juice
1/2 Cup Delaware Punch or Hawaiian Punch
3-4 Mint leaves Club Soda
Combine lime juice, mint and punch in a Collins or highball glass.
Stir gently to bruise the mint.
Fill glass 3/4 with ice.
Add the rum.
Top with soda. Stir well.
Of course beer is always acceptable.
Townsend, with those rules:
I'll be blind after 15 minutes
deaf in 20
near passed out stupor in 25
"call EMSA" after 30 minutes
Yet another drinking game to play:
Beers: Moosehead and Rolling Rock.
Mixed Drinks: "Alaska" (http://www.drinkswap.com/drinks/detail.asp?recipe_id=301) and "White Russian" (http://www.drinkswap.com/drinks/detail.asp?recipe_id=7771).
Place a White Russian on one side of the coffee table, and on the other, place everyone's Alaska. Place a baking pan filled with ice-water (representing the Bering Strait) between the libations. Then, stand at the end of the coffee table with all the Alaskans. You should be able to see the White Russian.
Rules:
1. If Biden mentions Scranton, PA, take a swig.
2. If Palin mentions Wasilla, AK, take a swig.
3. If the proximity between Alaska and Russia is mentioned, take a drink from the person who is sitting closest to you.
4. If anyone compares "Main street" to "Wall street", take a tiny sip. (Careful not to sip too much or you'll never make it to the second question.)
5. If Biden chuckles at something Palin says, chuckle and then drink.
6. If Palin says "you can't blink", the first person who DOES blink must drink.
7. If Palin uses the phrase, "hockey mom", drink until she takes the self-satisfied smirk off her face.
8. If Palin says McCain is a maverick, have a drink, THEN throw up a little in your mouth.
9. If Biden refers to himself in the third person, drink.
10. If the word "lipstick" is uttered by either candidate, everyone in the room says, in unison, "you can put lipstick on a beer, but it's still a beer", then take a drink.
11. If Biden tears up, drink.
12. If Palin says "I'll get back to you," do nothing.
13. If Biden uses the phrase "more of the same," drink more of the same.
14. If Palin mentions one of her kids by name, take the number of sips corresponding to that child's number in her brood (e.g. 1 sip for Track, 2 sips for Bristol, 3 sips for Willow, 4 sips for Piper and 5 sips for Trig).
15. If Biden points out that despite being less than 1/100th the size, Delaware has more people than Alaska, drink until you see the bottom of your glass.
16. If Biden begins the "I take the train home everyday story" being drinking. Don't stop until he finishes.
17. If Palin claims she said "Thanks but no thanks" to the Bridge to Nowhere: Demand a new drink from your host, say "thanks but no thanks" when your host tries to give it to you, and then when no one's looking, take it anyway but claim you never wanted it.

Perhaps she didn't want to mention that she gets all her international/political news and information from People Magazine....
I'm dreading the debate. Watching clips of Palin's interview with Couric was so painful and embarrassing, it made me squirm.
If Palin were competent, experienced, and well-versed in policy issues, I'd feel proud to have her on the ticket...even if I disagreed with her political views. Instead, it's just sad.
They are both doing well, Gov. Palin is doing better than I thought she would, Sen. Biden is showing a good amount of restraint and class, and I'm getting a good buzz. [;)]
I about shot beer through my nose though then Gov. Palin said "hockey mom" AND "Joe Sixpack" sequentially...
Good call Townsend [:P]

SARAH PALIN = clear winner
we will see what the liberal elite media does to spin this one ... but they are going to have a hard time on this one
^^^^^^
Huh??? Were you watching the same debate I watched? Yes, Palin exceeded expectations, but she was a nervous wreck, voice shaking, and saying nothing I hadn't already heard in previous talking points. I found Biden to be much more comfortable and knowledgeable, and I actually learned more about the Democratic ticket's positions. I would expect a performance like Palin's from a good high school debater. I would expect a performance like Biden's from a vice president.
Sarah Palin = simple well-coached answers from a Republican soundbite sockpuppet.
Palin won the battle of low expections but lost the war... Biden was typically passionate but luckily kept himself restrained. Biden was articulate and answered questions in full detail with complete understanding.
But I gave the edge to McCain in the last debate, so what do I know....?

Palin did better than her latest interviews - yep. It will be fun to review the text of their responses. Biden used great restraint and was likable. It will be positive movement for Biden. Palin did her best to save face, but as the dust settles, I don't see her pulling out of her nose dive.

Just like
Mod: Gov Palin, what's your take on the war in Iraq?
Gov Palin: Energy.
Great, coached answers.
If she was looking to stop the tide of bad press since the Couric interview, she did it.
Did she win the debate? Hardly. She just proved to me that she knows nothing about how government at the federal level should work. Biden does. Simple as that.
Who won the debate tonight depends entirely on what was expected of the two. Palin exceeded expectations, mostly because those were so low. She proved that she could form a coherent thought, and made some respectable responses--though they weren't in response to the questions asked.
Biden did as well as expected, but his expectations were pretty high.
If these were two equals, Biden clearly won. He actually answered the questions, and provided good arguments.
But they weren't equals. Given her handicaps, I would say it was a tie.

"She just proved to me that she knows nothing about how government at the federal level should work. Biden does. Simple as that."
Especially when the question of expanding the powers of the Vice-President's office came up. I thought Biden really scored points on that one.
Polls by CNN and CBS News both gave Biden a decisive win. CNN by a 15-point margin, and CBS by a 2-to-1 margin.
For what it's worth, CBS poll of undecideds said Biden won, 46% to 21% (33% said a tie). Eighteen percent said they are now committed to voting for Obama/Biden, 10% said for McCain/Palin. Most remained uncommitted.

CNN poll said Biden won as well.

All in all, not a monumental change in the race. Which is a problem for McCain.

Is
that all??
Rudy said, essentially, she kicked Biden's donkey bad. We all know Rudy isn't in the tank for the Republicans, right?
I had Biden the winner, he won a couple of major points I think. Again, different scenario from 2000 or 2004, Palin might have broke even or won back then. Biden seemed to throw Palin off her game only once or twice.
But, getting through it without severely screwing up was a victory for Palin. She did what she needed to do I think. I don't think she won too many new voters over for McCain, she probably shored up the base. But after the last couple weeks, not collapsing the campaign was probably a victory.
Awaiting October Revelations. Feeling for Palin, a loss on this VP gamble has the chance of ending her political future.
She came off as a very strong leader. Made eye contact with Gwen, the camera and Mr. Biden (actually made him nervous). She answered every question and took control of the debate.
She got him flustered, and it caused him to come off as a real shifty politician.
He made false remarks (lied straight out) on 3 points. She smiled and shook her head when he did, but did not attempt to correct him. THAT'S AWSOME. That shows me that she understands strategy. She actually let him dig his own holes and crawl in them without her help. That will be what is really picked up on in the up-coming ads.
My favorite quote was something to the effect
"I'm Joe Biden, people know me, I've been here for 36 years, I've never changed, and I'm not going to change. Obama/Biden is the real party of change."
. . .Blank stare and pause from Gwen and Palin. . . (beer spit-take in my living-room).
This morning the Politician to English interpreters are attempting to tell us what "Biden Really Meant" when he said the things he said. Palin has not required "interpreters" this morning. I think she has really embraced the Straight Talk philosophy.
I have to give Biden the win on this one. I was not impressed with Palin, and I was hoping for more from her.
However, I did not watch the entire debate and it's entirely possible Palin came out strong in the second half.
Oh, and I thought Gwen did a good job as moderator.

In fact, she didn't answer the questions, and made a point of saying she wasn't going to answer the questions. She talked about what she had rehearsed without responding to whay Gwen asked.
Not that most politicians don't do that. She just took it to the extreme.

Don't get dizzy there, Gas. You might think that the General in Afghanistan is McClellan instead of McKiernan.

I just have to add, I really didn't like her winking at the camera. Is she trying to get a date or running for vp? Totally inappropriate.
All in all, if you like someone who is folksy, lacks any track record, can make cute remarks with very little substance, and can wink at the camera, she's your gal.
Biden, despite his flaws, can do more than scratch the surface.
Anyone watch the graph representing the group of Ohio undecideds responding in real time to the debate? On CNN.
I was impressed with it and thought it was reflective of my own impressions. Then I listened to the group interviewed by one of the reporters. Sad. They are most likely undecided about everything in life.

Heh, now that's funny. I've been searching all over for a photo of when she and Biden were chatting face-to-face after the debate to illustrate the thought I had last night.
Biden: "So, uh, Sarah is it? How'd you like to join me in my suite for a little debriefing?"
Palin: "Let me get back to you on that, Joe"
Anyone else notice her body mic was left open after the debate for about 30 sec or so? I was cringing just waiting for her to say something like: "Yessiree Bob, I sure skinned him like a moose!" or "So Dad, you think I kicked his donkey?"
Reaction to the debate is pretty much as I was expecting, those with their minds made up and are voting for Obama think Biden won or had an advantage, those in the tank for McCain think Palin won or had an advantage.
She accomplished what she needed to which was overcome her Gibson and Couric interviews. She inspired more confidence in the GOP base and might get some leery GOP voters off the fence. With the rabid treatment from Democrats ever since the convention, there was no way she was going to earn enough points with Dem voters to sway them to vote for McCain.
Where I saw Biden's advantage was he did come off more kindly and less arrogant for most of the debate, which I think, increased his appeal to Inds and likely some GOP's who have only followed media accounts of him.
This was an opportunity for each party to feel better about their running mate, nothing more, nothing less.

I could not believe she told Biden - whose first wife was killed in a car crash - that his 'new' wife's reward was 'in heaven.' Outside of that I think she did awesome. The base stays with the Ticket.
Sometimes there were non-answers and sometimes there were wrong answers.

I was impressed with both of them. I was actually surprised by Palin.
This was my favorite answer...
Ifill:...the next question is to talk about the subprime lending meltdown.
Who do you think was at fault? I start with you, Governor Palin. Was it the greedy lenders? Was it the risky home-buyers who shouldn't have been buying a home in the first place? And what should you be doing about it?
Palin: One thing that Americans do at this time, also, though, is let's commit ourselves just every day American people, Joe Six Pack, hockey moms across the nation, I think we need to band together and say never again.
I guess I don't understand her folksey answer...Is she blaming hockey moms...or was this a subtle attack on Biden implying that he drinks a six pack?

I like that one too RM, but you forgot to post the whole paragraph.
"
One thing that Americans do at this time, also, though, is let's commit ourselves just every day American people, Joe Six Pack, hockey moms across the nation, I think we need to band together and say never again. Never will we be exploited and taken advantage of again by those who are managing our money and loaning us these dollars. We need to make sure that we demand from the federal government strict oversight of those entities in charge of our investments and our savings and we need also to not get ourselves in debt. Let's do what our parents told us before we probably even got that first credit card. Don't live outside of our means. We need to make sure that as individuals we're taking personal responsibility through all of this. It's not the American peoples fault that the economy is hurting like it is, but we have an opportunity to learn a heck of a lot of good lessons through this and say never again will we be taken advantage of."
It was a very good answer, when presented in context.
"Heck Yeah!"
The one statement she made that did make me cringe was: "I've only been at this five weeks". Honestly, if I were handling her, I'd have advised against a statement like that. Sure go for the outsider image, but saying you've "only been at this for five weeks" isn't a confidence-inspiring statement.
I didn't quite get where she was going with that until she commented later along the lines of: "You can tell I'm a DC outsider. I don't understand how people can vote for something then be against it..."

I think it gets worse. It sounds like more 'conservative' code-talk for screwing the average Joe. 'Never again' means 'OK, Wall Street, just this ONCE . . .'

I don't know. I think she was commenting on the fact that Biden has been making promises for 34 years. She was trying to contrast his performance vs his promises compared to her performance and executive experience.
This is the actual statement.
Gwen asked her: So, Governor, as vice president, there's nothing that you have promised as a candidate that you would -- that you wouldn't take off the table because of this financial crisis we're in?
"
I been at this, like five weeks? So there hasn't been a whole lot that I've promised, except to do what is right for the American people, put government back on the side of the American people, stop the greed and corruption on Wall Street."
Now here's Biden's answer to the same question:
Again, let me -- let's talk about those tax breaks. Barack Obama -- Obama voted for an energy bill because, for the first time, it had real support for alternative energy.
When there were separate votes on eliminating the tax breaks for the oil companies, Barack Obama voted to eliminate them. John did not.
And let me just ask a rhetorical question: If John really wanted to eliminate them, why is he adding to his budget an additional $4 billion in tax cuts for ExxonMobils of the world that, in fact, already have made $600 billion since 2001?
And, look, I agree with the governor. She imposed a windfall profits tax up there in Alaska. That's what Barack Obama and I want to do.
We want to be able to do for all of you Americans, give you back $1,000 bucks, like she's been able to give back money to her folks back there.
But John McCain will not support a windfall profits tax. They've made $600 billion since 2001, and John McCain wants to give them, all by itself -- separate, no additional bill, all by itself -- another $4 billion tax cut.
If that is not proof of what I say, I'm not sure what can be. So I hope the governor is able to convince John McCain to support our windfall profits tax, which she supported in Alaska, and I give her credit for it.Who answered the question honestly?
Remember the question?
Well the only feedback I have heard was a few of the "street people" Downtown could really identify with the "Joe six-pack" portion of the debate.....
They said it would be high on their considerations when casting their ballot.
all kidding aside they say where the polls stand on October 15th is how the thing will end.
Thank God there will be an end.

I dunno Rico, I think the election cycle was dangerously short this time. I really want to get to know the candidates.
I think they should start filing for the 2012 election the day after the new President is sworn in this January.
I never realized how therapeutic the word "new President" could be. [}:)]
^
Yeah so "therapeutic" that insanity is just a short step away.[;)]
After watching the debate and the ability of the debaters as to being informed, one could believe that those who are running for president was using the debaters as spokesmen for the changes in the government procedures that has escaped the needs of the common working classes.
I am a registered long time Democrat but I would host the white flag as the lady it seems go got in more words as well as being very informed (with humor) throughout the entire session.
Are we voting for a president who is standing the wings of the stage, waiting for his turn to be called on stage?

"One thing that Americans do at this time, also, though, is let's commit ourselves just every day American people, Joe Six Pack, hockey moms across the nation, I think we need to band together and say never again.
But, she didn't answer the question. Look, I'm a conservative and although I'm not fond of McCain, I prefer him over Obama (but not by much). The thing is, she didn't answer the question, as most politicians do - as Biden would have done.
I'm looking for a different kind of politician, not the same old same old..

I just have to add, I really didn't like her winking at the camera. Is she trying to get a date or running for vp? Totally inappropriate.
I assumed she wanted me and millions of Americans to go up to her room afterwards with a bottle of champagne.
Va va va voom!

But she essentially came out and said she wasn't going to answer the questions at the outset. That's a sure fire way to ensure you're viewed as a kook or a greenhorn when in a debate situation.
People want reassurance that you know what your stance is on the issues. Not whether or not you're cool to hang out with and have a beer.
People keep saying 'she's like one of us'. Well, that may be the case, but I'm the last person I'd want in the top two or three positions of power in the land. I'd rather have someone who knows what's going on in the world. She obviously does not.

That woman needs to go back to moose hunting.
Biden can at least pronounce the name of that country correctly!
Why don't you have a nice steaming bowl of gluten....
Very adult statement there. Shows your immaturity and stupidity all rolled into one!
I see site after site, post after post, that Biden was factual and Palin connected with the people and when it comes down to scoring points, based on facts, Biden wins. Well, Palin connected with the people, but Biden SOUNDED factual. His whole debate was a lie. Sorry Dems, but that's a win win for Sarah. Of course, I already new she would come out and put a beat down on the way the media successfully portrayed her, up to that point. I also knew the Joe Biden would come out and mislead, due to intent or ignorance. You can decide that for yourself. Look at all these misleading statements. Facts my @SS!!

Biden Factually Incorrect:
Biden said: McCain voted on the same way on the budget resolution as Obama did. [FALSE]
Answer: Those votes were held on 3/14 and 6/4, McCain votes no, Obama voted yes. In that resolution, there is a provision calling for a tax increase starting on people making as low $42,000/year.
Biden said: Under Obama people will not pay more taxes than they did under Reagan. [FALSE]
Answer: The top rate under Reagan was 28% and under Clinton it was 39.5% ... Obama wants to increase it to 39.5% Biden said: It would take at least ten years to get any oil from new production. [FALSE]
Answer: Not true, it would take a year or two in some instances.
Biden said: The "Use of Force" resolution was NOT a war resolution / authorization for war. [FALSE]
Answer: Yes it was. Biden said: McCain voted the same way Obama did with funding the troops. [FALSE] A
nswer: Look at the final passage vote, McCain voted yes, Obama voted no to funding the troops.
Biden said: The United States spends more in three weeks in Iraq as we have in the past seven years in Afghanistan. [FALSE]
Answer: That is inaccurate - no spending figures support that assertion.
Biden said: That Article I of the Constitution refers to the Executive branch. [FALSE]
Answer: Article I refers to the Legislative Branch - (and he graduated from law school and serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee in charge of the federal courts)
Biden said: He said there was a windfall profits tax in Alaska. [FALSE]
Answer: No there is no such tax.
Biden said: McCain opposed President Clinton on Bosnia. [FALSE]
Answer: Incorrect Biden said: Pakistan could hit Israel with a nuclear missle. [FALSE]
Answer: Pakistan is 2,198 miles away from Israel, their longest range missle has a range of 1200 miles.

HockeyMoMSquareGlasses wasn't exactly factual either.
How convenient for you to note Biden's errors but leave Tina Fey..err....Palin's off.
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/factchecking_biden-palin_debate.html
There's no convenience about it. Biden was given points in this debate for winning the factual arguments. Good attempt at steering away from the point. Gotta give ya PROPS!!

Oh yeah, can she name any Supreme Court decisions yet?
I still don't see why so many people are proclaiming Palin the winner of the debate. Joe Biden came out the clear victor in my view. He answered every single question that was directed at him, and quite eloquently at that. Instead of answering questions asked of her by Ifill, particularly at the beginning of the debate, Palin instead made her own. "I'd like to talk about energy instead..." She simply repeated memorized talking points given to her by the McCain Campaign. She didn't do as poorly as I expected, but sidestepping her questions and creating her own reflected poorly on her in my opinion.
