Title: August, Osage County
Post by: joiei on June 15, 2008, 09:14:55 PM
This play just won the Tony award for best play.  The Tulsa PAC needs to get on the ball and produce this play here considering it is about a family from Osage County, Oklahoma.

Not gonna happen...  it does not portray Osage county in a particularly fond light (as I understand it) and has some non-PC dialog ("Please, they prefer to be called Native Americans."  - "Why, they're no more Native than I am!").

Generally our PAC avoids controversial items.

There were actually a total of 5 Tony Awards related to 'August' - along with a Pulitzer Prize and Critics Choice Award. I'm really happy for Tracy, but I couldn't imagine the pressure.  As he is keeping up with all the to-do about August, he is finishing up his next play, Superior Doughnuts.  I would love to see August:OC come to the PAC.  It doesn't make Osage county look 'bad', but it may be a bit threatening just because of its extreme honesty.  Maybe all those awards will legitimize it enough to be accepted by some of the folks around here who would deem most classical art to be profane.

I hope you didn't take my stance as an opposition to the play.  When art goes out of it's way to offend people, then it annoys me and I can see why people are upset by it (see, e.g., the abortion chick or "performance art" that is really just harassing people or the Madonna in feces).  But in general I like my plays honest, my statues naked and my prudes mildly annoyed.   [:P]

Madonna in feces? Stands to reason, her music has the same consistency.

The articles in the Whirled didn't mention much about Tracy's background at all, nor what city he grew up in.  Did I gloss over something or did they really do that ****ty of a job at paying tribute for an incredible accomplishment (Pulitzer, Tony, other theater awards).
