Title: BOK Center Shuttle Route
Post by: sgrizzle on August 14, 2008, 08:05:29 pm
Okay, I'm confused. We're putting in a shuttle but it doesn't go to Brady, heck it doesn't even go to the BOK Center. It goes to Arby's though.

It gets to within about 400 feet from the front door to the arena. I guess they picked Cheyenne instead of Denver because it allows room for drop-off at events next to the arena.

The route uses existing one way streets on First, Fourth and Cheyenne and does connect most of the restaurants.

I am curious if their will be another one that connects the hotels, the new Central Park, and Greenwood, Brady, etc.

The entire shuttle route is just over a mile in length. I wonder how often it is going to run?

You would think it could make a complete loop in ten minutes or so.

Don't count on it.  After I saw the route I scanned the rest of the map, yep DTU is involved, solves the mystery of the myopic route.

What is a Street Fleet/Fleet Street worker and why are they placed somewhat randomly?

What would you change to the route?

The route needs to be simple and short enough to run the shuttles often. It needs to incorporate where people need to park and want to go.

1st and Denver south to 4th and Denver, east to 4th and Elgin (or maybe Detroit), north to Brady, West to Main, South to 1st, back to 1st and Denver. If they came down to 6th, that would access even more parking areas.

Street Fleet explained (http://"http://tinyurl.com/5rcw9y")

If you look closely at the map, the route is designed to link the majority of the parking in the CBD. It gets within a block or so of:

- 905 space Williams North garage, 330 space surface parking lot immediately to west and 200 space parking lot to south.
- two 300 space surface parking lots on Archer
- 1191 space 100 West garage
- 1161 space Main Mall garage
- KC Auto Hotel, surrounding surface parking and 294 space PAC parking lot.
- 450 space surface lot at Santa Fe Depot

That's well over 5,000 parking spaces connected by the shuttle, dropping you off one block from the arena's front door. At a typical average of slightly more than 2 people per vehicle, that's parking for about 11,000 patrons.

There are also over 2,300 parking spaces south and west of the arena in the Civic Center Plaza, Convention Center garage, and State Office Building parking lot, according to the map.

The street fleet sounds like a wonderful opportunity to tell people where to go. I do it all the time, often times unwanted by the recipient.

Downtown ambassadors would have probably been a better name.

I like the idea, but it sounds like a lot of standing around on sidewalks. I also make a horrible first impression and have been known to invent expressive hand gestures.

I think we should build kiosks on every block with the new TulsaNow Downtownlive! maps. Lots of cities do this and it helps me find my way around..

For now at least, they could be supplied to the volunteers (great idea) so they can easily explain to folks where they are and where they're going and send them off with the directions.

Definately more friendly than telling them where to go.  [:)]

But according to the map, the nearest stop to the BOK Center is a good 3 1/2 blocks from the front door.  It does a decent job of connecting parking lots to one another, but what if someone wants to go to the arena?  ;-)

Great route if you're at McNellies.

I understand the desire to link up with parking lots, but if they want to help downtown businesses (other than parking lot owners, of course) there should be a route that connects with Brady, and hits the night spots.

Perhaps a different colored shuttle could swing up and around the Brady district.  Or there could be a gray shuttle that takes you to parking lots, and a colorful shuttle that runs by night spots.

(Who's paying for the shuttle, by the way?)

If you ignore the fact that the shuttle can be an economic development tool for downtown establishments, you're missing the point.  (Wasn't the purpose of the arena to help spur economic development downtown?)  How does it help downtown if everyone parks in the middle of nowhere, takes the shuttle to and from the arena, and then leaves?

Imagine a different scenario where shuttles stop near existing nightlife. (Not just McNellies...but the Brady and even South Boston areas).  Now people have an excuse to drop in and have dinner or a drink before/after the show.  (Which you can't really do at 4th and Cincinnati or 2nd and Main.)

Maybe this is just a test run...and "they" will fine-tune the process over time.

Or maybe the T-Town Trolley will supplement this route with a "Nightlife Route?"

They're letting people off at 3rd & Cincinnati. The map doesn't show it as a "stop", only the places along the route where people can catch the trolley to get to the arena.

Yes, you're right. 3rd & Cheyenne. [:I]
