This is pretty interesting little gadget. The info is pulled from the Election commission and stay current based on how current the Election Commission's data is.

Not much different than opensecrets.org.  Curious why the University of California has dumped so much money into his 2008 and 2012 efforts, anyone know?

Complete shot in the dark, but...

Possibly angling/hoping for a bailout when the state finally goes bankrupt. The state's university system is probably the largest single employer of public sector workers. I don't know if they are the largest because I don't know if they lump all the secondary school systems together like the do the post-secondary.

One must remember that if you work, say, for IBM, your campaign contribution is labeled as coming "from" IBM. That's not to say that the UC system may not be encouraging people to donate as other employers too often do, but you can't really know from the data.
