Title: Stormgasm 2015 is now open...
Post by: Hoss on March 25, 2015, 01:25:31 pm
Biggest threat today for the area is larger-than-golf-ball sized hail and high wind.  Low threat of tornadoes but they surely can't be ruled out.

Watching Brandon Ivey driving from near Hillcrest to now out by East Central on the Weather Channel. The confusing one at first was KJRH tower cam looking north west and finally recognized the towers at PSO on the river and figured out they were looking at the early one near Sand Springs.

A bit close for comfort.  Fortunately only some twigs and really small limbs off at our house.  We did have quarter to golf ball size hail here at 21st & Yale.

Tulsa dodged a bullet tonight...for the most part.

Of course, my drunk friends were sitting at Arnie’s marveling at roofing material sailing down 2nd St, apparently.

I know the building has a basement.  I don't know what it may have in it, if anything.

I know that people at the hockey game were all shuffled to the basement. I was up at the office. Our building has two big old vaults in case we needed it. We didn't. But now I have no power and estimates are restoration at 7am.

Have I mentioned that overhead lines in a city like Tulsa are asinine?

KRMG was reporting there’s wind damage on 15th between Sheridan & Memorial.  Did you see anything on your way home?

I got to my glass class at Waterworks about 5:30 and was promptly sent to the basement. At one point we could hear what sounded like the roar of a tornado passing by very closely. There was no power and all we had was the light of our cell phones while we hunkered down there until about 6:45. I have a bit of hail damage on my car - not too bad though and I will wait until the storm season is over before worrying about it.

Nope, but I just got out and got back.  Police have 15th blocked at Sheridan and Memorial, so no getting in that neighborhood unless you do it from 21st Street.  I just drove west on Admrial from the Traffic Circle to Sheridan, down to 21st, back up 21st to Memorial and up Memorial to 11th Street and home.  I saw a couple of uprooted trees up Memorial and the like.  Captain D's sign on Admiral just west of Memorial was blown over.  Big bucket trucks working on power lines just across from the Ghetto Mart on the hill.  Lots of Cox trucks, AT&T as well.  I've seen worse after storms, but I didn't go out east yet.  Since I"m off this week, I might try and get out towards Sand Springs if I can get there to see how it looks.

However, what I did see last night at work while out on the back dock was a power pole leaning over at about a 30 degree angle that would have been in between Sheridan and Memorial on 15th Street.  I'm sure that's related.

As much hail as I drove through trying to get back to work, I'm surprised mine has no hail damage.  I parked the car in the overhang of the loading docks at work up a ramp so that likely saved my bacon.  I looked pretty hard at the car this morning and no dents that I observed.  No cracked windshields, no house damage.  I consider myself lucky coming through this the way I did.  Power did finally come back on about 6:45 this morning; just got my TV/Internet/landline back about 10 minutes ago.

Turns out the gymnastics center on Charles Page that got hit was less than 2 miles away from Waterworks (Newblock Park). We probably did indeed hear the tornado passing by us.

There is something "otherworldly" bizarre about how Moore keeps getting hit in the same place every time a storm comes through.  I got sandblasted by the debris cloud there last night (posted in other thread) and it was less than 1,000 feet north of the monster that blasted the place previously.

It's as if the Weather Gods have a personal thing against the town!

It may have to be abandoned and allowed to return to pasture!  From about 82nd street to Indian Hills Road.  It is becoming one of those things like New Orleans - why keep doing the same thing in the same place with the same destructive results?

Overshadowed by the weather was a report earlier yesterday that early in the week there was a record number of earthquakes in the area (north central OK) where the storm seemed to have started. So many that the state is warning drillers.

I remember hearing that there may be a connection between the quakes and storms. Anyone else hear or know about that?

I wonder what the odds are of anywhere getting struck by a tornado twice are, let alone what are the odds that an area can be struck every other year over the last five years, and four times at least since 1999?

I wonder what the odds are of anywhere getting struck by a tornado twice are, let alone what are the odds that an area can be struck every other year over the last five years, and four times at least since 1999?

TWC interviewed someone from Moore who said they hold the record as far as tornadoes are concerned. They're probably right, but what a record to hold!

The odds of being struck as often and with such high intensity storms as Moore has seen seems to be pretty historic if The Weather Channel is accurate.

Areas can be struck twice though. In the early 1960s, my husband had an aunt and uncle who lived on a farm that was hit by two tornadoes in about a month's time. Our tornadoes are GENERALLY not the 4's and 5's that OK has and those wouldn't have been anywhere near it. I don't remember if tornadoes were categorized back then, definitely not with the EF scale, but they were tornadoes, nonetheless.

We were glued to TWC to see how things turned out down there. Some of their info was wrong, like the tornado being in Sand Springs being east of Tulsa, said their was a fatality, but didn't say if it was in Moore or Sand Springs, etc. Still amazing considering the pictures they showed and the interviews they did considering the type of weather they were dealing with.

You got me curious so I did a search and there is actually a lot of info out there about this very thing. I'd guess a more in-depth search could give us results refuting this.

They caught all the tigers later that same evening.

I have alluded to a somewhat nomadic lifestyle in the past, and one of the main implements/tools of that lifestyle was destroyed Wednesday evening with all the other RVs in southeast OKC.  What a gawd-awful-mess it is!!   I am the lucky one - I have spares.  And other homes....most of the long term residents there do not.  Now just need a new parking place....

As of this morning, the event has reinforced my lack of cash support to the Red Cross, nothing beyond a little vampire action.  Two days now and have not seen a single Red Cross emblem.  Lots of Faux News hovering around - Dallas, Tulsa, OKC - even talked with one for a while but won't be on camera - I am way to ugly for TV.  NBC (national I think) had a truck parked for a while yesterday.

Glad to hear you weren't being nomadic at the wrong time.

The Red Cross gets its info from local authorities, who sometimes let things slip through the cracks.
I would contact them directly:

Main Phone (918) 831-1100
Main Fax (918) 831-1134

24-hour emergency assistance after a disaster:
    918-831-1109 or 1-800-494-0275

Not jinxed, God's just showing his displeasure for Sally Kern.  Once she is not re-elected or strokes out finally, the tornadoes will stop looking for her.  :-*

Probably.  If one looks at the big tornado record for central OK, Moore IS the target!  That one a month ago, formed up in about 30 seconds while I was standing there - drove south.  Big truck turned over about 1/4 mile behind me, and about 45 seconds after I went through there.  And yesterday, in addition to more really big storms, there was a 3.2 earthquake NE of the city.  Didn't feel it though due to all the thunder/lightning rattling my teeth!

I think it is likely that God also has it in for Moore - in particular because they are so "proud" of Tobey Keith.  Definitely a message there!!

One of the critical's named Walter - he had just gotten out of hospital that day - could not wake him up when storm was coming through...probably medicated... so he and his wife (also critical, but improving) rode it out in the trailer.  Very bad.

Another critical - 17 yr old kid - getting surgery Monday, I am told.  Not sure why he didn't go to shelter..?  17 year old attitude maybe??

Need a very large forklift to move a couple trailers today....
