Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: guido911 on October 05, 2007, 06:12:44 pm With all the chain restaurants throughout Tulsa, is there a local restaurant in Tulsa that says "This is Tulsa" a local could take an out of town visitor?

http://www.thepologrill.com/ http://www.greenoniontulsa.net/ Those are just off the top of my head. I'm sure I can come up with others. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: AngieB on October 05, 2007, 06:58:57 pm quote: [xx(] That's all I have to say about that. I would offer Tucci's, Lambrusco'z, The Brook, Caz's, McNellies... Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: dsjeffries on October 05, 2007, 07:11:30 pm I'd like to add the Wild Fork and El Guapo's (the rooftop especially screams 'This is Tulsa!').
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Breadburner on October 05, 2007, 07:18:13 pm White River....Jim's Never On Sunday....Brownies...Celebrity Club...
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: MH2010 on October 05, 2007, 07:30:42 pm quote: The rooftop of El Guapo's is outstanding but I thought the food was average. The margarita's on the other hand....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: YoungTulsan on October 05, 2007, 10:24:28 pm Brothers Houligan
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Double A on October 06, 2007, 12:52:09 am quote: Damn. You beat me to it. Here's a few more: Phil's Diner BBD's JB Wilsons BBQ Ron's Hamburgers Albert G's Barbecue Queenie's Weber's Hamburgers Claude's Hamburgers Ron's Hamburgers Steak Stuffers Jamil's St. Michael's Alley Full Moon Cafe Halim & Mimi's Big Al's Health Foods Hideaway Pizza(It started in Stillwater, but Tulsa took it to the next level) Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: guido911 on October 06, 2007, 08:12:57 am Thanks for the input...But would you mind refining the lists of unique restaurants to this parameter. Is there something about Tulsa dining that belongs to Tulsa. More specifically, Philadelphia has its cheesesteaks, Maine has its lobster, Washington has its salmon, Tulsa has ______. (Please, no "corrupt government" comments)
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: RecycleMichael on October 06, 2007, 08:28:05 am I would say the only real standout item in the Tulsa restaurant scene is the hamburger.
A Tulsa restaurant was the first to put a beef patty on a round bun... http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/HamburgerHistory.htm Tulsa has some excellent hamburger joints. My favorite is Bill's (over by 2nd and Utica), but Ron's, Weber's, and others make a great hamburger worth praise. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: tim huntzinger on October 06, 2007, 08:29:52 am Alex, is it 'What are chicken-fried steaks with a nice merlot?'
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Porky on October 06, 2007, 08:59:50 am quote: I would have to say Steaks. Seems every "nice" restaurant has it's own way of curing/cooking them and they are all delicious. Obviously being in cattle country helps in getting the choice cuts of steaks to cook. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: tim huntzinger on October 06, 2007, 01:04:47 pm 'El Guapos' needs to be renamed 'El GUANOS' [xx(]
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Double A on October 07, 2007, 02:22:04 am quote: Ranch dressing, we eat it on everything. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Markk on October 07, 2007, 07:21:50 am quote: Can't believe no one mentioned Stonehorse, so I just did. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: inteller on October 07, 2007, 10:31:07 am quote: this could be fixed with a little spray paint :) Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: waterboy on October 07, 2007, 11:10:54 am My wife and I agreed that Tulsa's barbeque is a signiture meal here. Even though other areas claim barbeque as their own, we have several fine ones that can't be beat. Knotty Pine, Elmer's and Wilson's come to mind.
But I really would consider chicken fried steak with gravy as well. I judge a restaurant primarily on that menu item. If it passes, I'll return and try other items. Darn hard to find good ones. BTW, best steak I ever had was at Doe's over on Cherry Street. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: doofus on October 07, 2007, 12:35:25 pm Don't forget Hank's Hamburgers of course, on Admiral just west of the traffic circle.
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: guido911 on October 07, 2007, 04:25:57 pm quote: Steak? At Doe's, more like best side of beef is more like it at. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: tulsascoot on October 07, 2007, 04:26:05 pm quote: I 've tried Camille's several time, but it has yet to impress me. Now a restaurant that says "Tulsa" whether you like it or not, would have to be the Spudder. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: perspicuity85 on October 07, 2007, 05:12:23 pm Tulsa's Lebanese steakhouses are unique to most of the country. Jamil's, Eddy's, and the Silver Flame are all good bets. Most of them have been in business for well over 25 years.
You might also try Elmer's BBQ. I have heard it referred to as "Tulsa style" before. Any local restaurant that combines Midwestern, Southwestern, and Southern food screams Tulsa. We are the confluence of those 3 regions. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: cannon_fodder on October 08, 2007, 09:39:21 am Damn, we need to put together a Tulsa Travel Guide with all these places listed. I rack my brain when people come to town because I don't believe you should eat at franchises out of town.
"Tulsa Restaurants" "Tulsa Unique Restaurants" There, now my search will be easier next time I need to find this thread. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: dsjeffries on October 08, 2007, 10:23:55 am I actually just remembered that I have a database of Tulsa restaurants on my computer... Not all are completely unique to Tulsa, but most are. If anyone wants it, just let me know. It's in Excel format.
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: dsjeffries on October 08, 2007, 10:34:53 am quote: I always thought Celebrity Club was a strip club--the exterior doesn't exactly scream "restaurant", and it wasn't until they added, "Fine dining" under the name that I knew it was actually a restaurant. What's the food like there? Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: guido911 on October 08, 2007, 11:12:14 am quote: Agreed on The Spudder, at least for atmosphere. Rolls in lunch boxes. Food's pretty decent too. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: joiei on October 08, 2007, 11:48:16 am quote:Order the fried chicken. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: RecycleMichael on October 08, 2007, 01:10:31 pm The fried chicken at the Celebrity Club is among the best I have ever eaten. I bet the chicken gladly die just for that restaurant.
I also love the Caeser salad made at your table. The owner, Mike Samara, was also allowed the honor of serving the first leagal mixed drink in Oklahoma. Because he put up so much of the money to pay for the election to make liquor by the drink legal, they gave him his permit a day before anyone else. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: PonderInc on October 08, 2007, 01:32:40 pm Nothing says "uniquely Tulsa" like a Sausage Cheeseburger from Ron's.
Legend has it that the sausage cheeseburger was invented by mistake when an employee accidentally mixed the ground sausage with the ground hamburger...and the customer loved it. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: carltonplace on October 08, 2007, 01:43:45 pm No one mentioned Blue Dome Diner. Great Breakfast and Lunch fare, their biscuits are outstanding but someone needs to help them with the cream gravy.
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: doofus on October 08, 2007, 03:19:57 pm Another long-time Tulsa cafe is Cortner's, on S. Sheridan at around 8th St. or so. Been around for years and years (and shows it, but the food is just as good as ever!) I was looking at the design of a dinner knife there once (it was diff from the fork and spoon patterns) and recognized the pattern from my own family when I was growing up! I thought maybe they had found it in a garage sale somewhere. Anyway, it's only open 'til 2pm through the week, 1pm on Sat. I think.
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: darkspectre on October 09, 2007, 07:56:47 am Cedar's Import Company(formally Antone's) over at about 25th and Sheridan. They are mainly a Lebanese food joint, but they have the best Po' Boy subs & Tabouli in town.
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: restored2x on October 11, 2007, 02:09:36 pm I'm still waiting for someone to suggest a "uniquely Tulsa" restaurant. Not Lebanese, not Italian - something that is unique to Tulsa. Maybe the aforementioned burger joints make the grade (if indeed the hamburger was invented here, that's a big deal) or maybe Tulsa style barbeque.
Is there a dish that screams "Tulsa"? Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Townsend on October 11, 2007, 02:20:11 pm quote: Someone's already mentioned Phat Phillies. I know I know, they're phillies. The owner's a local guy, it's in Gunboat, the food is way tasty, and you can get your picture on the wall for eating as many as you can. The big bonus is after you eat it you can squeeze the wax paper and napkins you used and strike oil...that's screaming TULSA. You can smear it all over your face and pretend you're James Dean on "Giant" too. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: restored2x on October 11, 2007, 02:53:46 pm quote: I'm from back east, and Phat Phillies is great! Closest thing to "real" Philly Cheesesteaks around here - love the atmosphere - If the grease doesn't saturate the wrappings - it ain't no cheesesteak Crap - now I wanna Phat Philly. Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: izmophonik on October 11, 2007, 05:52:41 pm Newsflash to a few Camille's fans here. It has been closed for about 3 weeks now. It re-opened as some joint called "Lucky's". I've never been there but I might try it out sometime. They have a Sunday brunch which is supposed to be good. Pomodori's hasn't been mentioned here yet so there you go. It is owned by the same family that used to own Camille's.
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: izmophonik on October 11, 2007, 05:53:22 pm sorry guys.. .I mean Camerelli's is gone. Not Camille's. :-)
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Rowdy on October 11, 2007, 06:28:39 pm quote: To think this signifies Tulsa. Where's that River money... Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Kashmir on October 11, 2007, 08:09:10 pm A Sausage burger from Ron's with a root beer is one of the great pleasures in life. And some of the ginormous bacon hot-cheese fries! I swear, I love the food threads on this board![:)] quote: Would that be Peppers? Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Rowdy on October 12, 2007, 03:07:47 pm Yeah Peppers as in disappeared.
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: Breadburner on October 12, 2007, 04:40:35 pm Weber's.....
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: kongsuni on October 16, 2007, 06:11:18 am quote: I'd like that list. I'm always up for trying new things. :) [^] Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: hunterjohn1 on November 07, 2007, 03:27:45 am My family loves the new RUNT'S BBQ next to Bass Pro Shop in BA. My friends and family have darkened their doorsteps numberous times and the RIB'S are absolutly the best on the PLANET in our opinion. The girls think it is the cleanest restaurant in town!!It is fun and has a unique concept, kinda like steppin back in to a vintage movie theater feel. Whenever we haven't visited for a while someone will call and say we need a RUNT'S fix & off we go. We also like their steaks & smoked prime rib & catfish. Beats the chain stuff hands down!!
Title: Uniquely Tulsa Restaurant Post by: guido911 on November 07, 2007, 07:51:25 am quote: Wow, sounds like either an advertisement or a family member of Runt's ownership is on the forum.. Seriously, this will go on my list of places to go...tx |
