Title: EARTHQUAKE!
Post by: AquaMan on March 30, 2014, 07:28:37 am
My little Silky Yorkie woke me up around 2 am barking at nothing, then again several times over the next hours. I couldn't get back to sleep and felt the 4.2 hit at 3:43am. Felt like someone jumped on my roof.

We may need to look at earthquake insurance.

Am I tripping? Did I just feel another one at 9:15?

Apparently, my threshold is around 4.2 to 4.4 the latter one lasting about 5 seconds or more. My Silky Yorkie on the other hand is my early warning system. Dumb but sensitive. Going to feed him well.

I don't fear earthquakes since we seldom have any damage here in OK. But I do fear that the local TV stations may start to cover them like they do the weather with updates every 10 minutes and special apps for our phones.

From the Whirled:

The U.S. Geological Survey has reported 13 earthquakes in Oklahoma since 10 p.m. Saturday night.
The largest, a 4.4 magnitude quake, was reported at 9:09 a.m. in Logan County near Marshall, Okla.

Thank you. Looks like there were 52 earthquakes worldwide in the last 24 and we had over 20% of them.

The one around 1:50 or 1:55am today shook my house -- near downtown Tulsa.  I haven't noticed any of the other recent earthquakes.

The one right before 2 in the morning woke me up.  Must have slept through the later one.  I popped online in the morning to check the news and see if there were any earthquakes reported and only saw the one near OKC that was not at 2am.  Was like, I know I wasn't imagining it so went to the USGS gov site and sure enough there was a decent sized one around 2 in the morning in another part of Oklahoma.  Last one I felt everyone was like, "naaa, you couldn't' have felt it, must have been a large truck or something" and I was like, "I know it was that earthquake and I did feel it lol".  At least others felt this one in Tulsa as well.

I didn't feel a darn thing- However if quakes are happening it seems to me they can do a lot of damage to homes- our homes are not designed for quakes or ground movement and foundations can crack.

Impossible to tell at my office.  There is so much heavy equipment and trucks moving up and down W. 41st street in front of my office, the building shakes quite a few times every day.  I don’t even notice it much of the time anymore.

Sometimes the big boiler here at the office does the same.

Must have been the one. My poor little house feels like its just going to be shaken apart by all these earthquakes.  My first thoughts while it was going on (seemed to last for about 15 seconds or more which is quite a bit when you freeze and hold on listening to everything rattle lol) was thinking about the parking garage my shop is in.  Looking at how it's built I don't think it could handle much shaking.  All that hard work, and possibly me or my employees, squished flat under tons of cement.  Not a reassuring thought.  Remembering back on those larger quakes in California seemed that the parking garages were one of the structures most likely to collapse.

Darn it I never feel them, I felt only one quake that happened around 10am a few years ago. Seems everyone else feels them 'cept me.

Just from the look and feel of your shop, I think I would have an emergency plan for each of our catastrophes (tornado, fire, and earthquake).  All pretty simple for your place, I would think.  Maybe a drill or two...?

Fire - go out the front door, and across the street (west).  Then call fire department....

Earthquake - go out the front door, turn left to clear the building, then diagonally southeast across the parking to avoid the falling Equity bldg and the tall one next to it.  This one is tough because of all the tall and semi-tall buildings around.

Tornado - easiest of all....just bend over and kiss your donkey goodbye....  Not really - inside room - might be able to build a "safe" wall fairly easily - Texas Tech shows how.  Takes some extra anchoring to floor, some 2 x 4 additions (minor).  3/4" plywood and some 12 ga sheet metal.  If you remodeled coming in to the place, this is probably something you could do.

So we had another 4.8 an hour ago, just big enough to be aware of it without really knowing what it was (at least when you are in the shower).
