Renowned Architect Alan Hart Speaks at Forum

Thanks to everyone who joined us for “Time to Twilight Zoning? Building the Beautiful Back into Tulsa” (co-hosted by TulsaNow and Sustainable Tulsa).

Alan Hart of Via Architecture in Vancouver gave an inspiring presentation in which he talked about the importance of community involvement as well as individual “heroic acts” in defining and driving revitalization initiatives.

According to Hart, it's imperative that Tulsans first decide what we want our city to be, and then write zoning/codes that support that vision. Too often, zoning laws work against the best interests of a city. Zoning codes should be like a recipe that allows a community to create the city they've envisioned.

As an urban planner, one of his unique philosophies is: “love the question.” According to Hart, when people question a proposal it shouldn’t be met with defensiveness or resistance. Questions may result from fear, miscommunication, or valid concerns on the part of the citizens; honoring the question is the first step on the way to collaboration, respect and trust. He believes in looking for the “both/and” solution rather than fighting the “either/or” battle.

You can see why we’ve officially dubbed Alan “The Zen Master of Urban Planning.” (Attention City of Tulsa officials: If you're looking for a consultant to help guide us through the development of a new Comprehensive Plan, we know just the guy!)

If you couldn't make it to the forum, watch the video! Video coverage includes Alan's presentation as well as audience questions and panel discussions with Jamie Jamieson from the Pearl District Neighborhood, and Terry Taylor from the OKC Planning Dept.
