Preserving Historic Preservation
Thank You
Both bills have been killed. And with a 42 to 3 vote we do mean killed!
Thanks to everyone that contacted their state legislators and helped stop these measures. A bill currently being rushed through the Oklahoma legislature would essentially undermine Historic Preservation zoning (also know as HP). HB2559 and SB1324 makes it easier to remove the historic designation from property for a number of reasons. But most troubling is the section that of the House bill that states "All appeals of final decisions made by the board of adjustment shall be made to the district court.."
This essentially means that local municipalities are no longer in charge of a zoning dispute. Any appeal involving HP zoning immediately becomes a court matter.
We see historic districts as valuable assets to our community. This bill would indicate that our elected officials consider historic preservation a roadblock to development. TulsaNow believes this proposal is not in the best interest of Tulsa. Or Oklahoma.
How Much Justice Can You Afford?
Immediate action is necessary because, believe it or not, this bill has been marked as an emergency measure. TulsaNow urges all Oklahomans to contact their state legislators and ask them to do whatever they can to stop SB1324. The bill is sponsored by State Senator Brian Crane and representatives Ron Peters and Jeannie McDanial.
In a recent form post Pmcalk put it best: "Even if you don’t give a hoot about HP zoning, this is democracy at its lowest—creating a specific law to benefit one person who has enough money to buy influence. Don’t let this developer re-write the laws to his own benefit. Help preserve Tulsa’s historic neighborhoods."
If you aren't sure who your state legislators are use this form to look them up.
