6th Street Task Force Hearing Nov 2

! ACTION ALERT !

Tulsa Now is issuing an “Action Alert” for the following reason:

We heard Tuesday evening (Nov 1st) that there will be an attempt to delay the TMAPC's approval of the Infill Task Force's Neighborhood Plan at the Hearing on the following day (Wednesday, Nov 2nd).

THIS IS AN URGENT CALL FOR ACTION, in the form of attendance and advocacy at the Tulsa Metropolitan Planning Commission's Hearing of the 6th Street Neighborhood Plan, which will take place at 1:30pm on Wednesday, November 2nd, at the City Council Chamber.

The justification for this proposed delay will apparently be the Indian Health Care Center's desire to close Owasso Avenue between 6th St and 5th Place. (They filed for this a couple of months ago, but have not pursued it through to a Hearing by the Council; they were aware of the strong opposition to it by the 6th St. Task Force).

Members of the 6th Street Task Force are very concerned that this is an attempt to derail the product of five years, non-stop, neighborhood planning. The Task Force's successes to date include the lake and community center in Central Park, the American Lung Association's re-habing of the Fire Alarm building, and the influx of new, creative businesses into the neighborhood. The 6th Street Plan is the culmination of the process. The Plan is supported by Tom Baker, Councilor for District 4.

The TMAPC members have shown enthusiasm for the Plan and apparently no issues arose from their work sessions in reviewing it. INCOG has known about the Health Care Center's proposed Owasso closure for weeks and until today has not expressed any concern that the Center's desire to close a street might conflict with the Hearing for the Plan. On the contrary, INCOG proposed a few minor tweaks to the Plan which the Task Force accepted.

I realize most of us have day jobs, but I strongly urge you to do your best to attend the Hearing and to speak up on behalf of the Plan. You will make it a lot easier for the TMAPC to approve it.

Thanks so much!

Sincerely,
Rebecca Bryant
